  No Maori allowed documentary
Posted by: Lilith7 - 19-10-2022, 02:05 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (6)

Saw this last night; it was the first I've heard of this. How absolutely disgraceful that it was allowed to happen, & worse, continue for decades. Angry Dodgy

 https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/130075649/tvnz-documentary-no-mori-allowed-revisits-pukekohes-history-of-segregation

"Producer Reikura Kahi knows No M─üori Allowed will be confronting for many viewers but believes it is a story that needs telling.

The documentary turns the spotlight on Pukekohe and the South Auckland townÔÇÖs history of racism and segregation.
It reveals that from 1920 until the early 1960s, M─üori were barred from public toilets, segregated at the cinema and swimming baths, refused alcohol, haircuts and taxi rides, forced to stand for white bus passengers and barred from schools.
Kahi hopes the documentary sparks conversations ÔÇô a lot of conversations ÔÇô around the country.

ÔÇ£It took a lot of strength, and a lot of talking to their wh─ünau, to come to the realisation that this story is important and that it was important for them to finally find the strength to tell their story,ÔÇØ Kahi says, adding the women hadnÔÇÖt even told their wh─ünau much about what they had experienced.

It is the story of growing up in a town where white supremacists were so strongly supported they were able to force the local council to allow segregation.
In 1926, the White New Zealand League was incorporated in Pukekohe and Kahi says the Ku Klux Klan was also active in South Auckland at the time.
M─üori families were forced to live in dirt-floored shacks ÔÇô with no running water or plumbing ÔÇô on the edge of town, well away from European residents. Children, who regularly died from measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and tuberculosis, were buried in unmarked graves."

Hi, Sept 1 NZpost price rise. The latest NZpost pamphlet has no prices listed, which is useless.
Our local dairy is charging the same price for Prepaid bags and Economy tickets.
It is possible that many shops around the country, have the same freedom to do this also.
I contacted NZpost and they were no help at all.
I won't buy their plastic bags. But now "economy" costs more than Prepaid bags because of the cost of self-packaging

Changes to domestic small parcel sending - September 2022 | NZ Post

Is this happening anywhere else?

"Economy ticket" price is NOT an option at the local agent

Needs to get back into govt, ive just listened to his recent speech and I agree with everything he says, especially when it comes to co-governance.
This country has become more divided than ever and we are facing a wave of reverse racism.
I hope winston has a good chance of getting re-elected back into govt or else the only other option is to go for ACT.
The state of this country is the worst its ever been, we need change desperately, another 3 years with labour running the show would be depressing.

The Scots actor is probably most known for the role of Hagrid in the Harry Potter films but he's done various other roles over the years & I loved him in Cracker, which at that time was unlike anything which had come before it.

The possibilities for the next election

It seems to be the usual slash & bash from the Nats - not the well off, naturally. And currying favour with farmers regardless of the environment. In the name of 'progress' & 'growth' the top 39% tax rate will be removed - for those earning above $180,000.

  Mt Ruapehu skifields

Such a shame to see how things have turned out there. This ski season was a bit of a lemon, but covid didnt help things either with the last 2 seasons.
I bumped into an ex-RAL employee on the lift last month and she said they had even 2 worse seasons than this in the late 80s. I was surprised how much snow Whakapapa had compared to Turoa.

If the govt does bail them out, it may be a good thing if we see RAL administered by the likes of DOC or something.
the 20 million dollar gondola on whakapapa didnt help their situation either as they were counting on that paying off with tourists returning, it does lend well to summer activities though even though skiers hate it.

  The Ukraine War

There are a number of sources I follow, for background information on this conflict.

The prime source is Perun - an Australian gamer who started posting hour long presentations at the start of the war - his postings suggest an academic background in defence economics and procurement.

For an English presentation from a Ukranian, Operator Starsky is the man. He is a press officer in the Ukranian Army.

https://www.youtube.com/c/StarskyUA

A straight Ukranian view, in Ukranian, comes from Sternenko. These I watch with closed captions and auto translate turned on.

https://www.youtube.com/c/STERNENKO

And finally, for a soldier's eye view, there is a blog which posts conversations with an American volunteer fighting in Ukraine - this man is a Vietnam veteran, and professional soldier, he is 76!

  Netflix
Posted by: Oldfellah - 14-10-2022, 10:01 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (12)

I was thinking of getting Netflix but not now

It costs $12.99 to $24.99 per month for Netflix in NZ today, depending on the number of screens and whether you get frills like 4K ultra high definition.

Netflix says its ad-supported plan will cost A$6.99 ($8.75) per month, and launch on November 3 in 12 countries, including the US and Australia.

The new Netflix Basic With Ads account will feature:

ÔÇó Ads of 15 or 30 seconds in length, shown before and during shows and movies.

ÔÇó Ads will average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour

ÔÇó No ability to download content

ÔÇó No 4K. Video quality will top-out at 720p standard high definition

ÔÇó A smaller selection of content. Around 10 per cent of Netflix's catalogue of TV series and movies will be missing.
