  Artificial intelligence again
Posted by: Lilith7 - 08-10-2022, 02:44 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (15)

I came across this article which claims that AI could be bad news for humans, with many scientists believing they could be a catastrophe.

https://www.livescience.com/50467-artifi...takes.html

"From smartphone apps like Siri to features like facial recognition of photos, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a part of everyday life. But humanity should take more care in developing AI than with other technologies, experts say.

Science and tech heavyweights Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking have warned that intelligent machines could be one of humanity's biggest existential threats. But throughout history, human inventions, such as fire, have also posed dangers. Why should people treat AI any differently?
"With fire, it was OK that we screwed up a bunch of times," Max Tegmark, a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said April 10 on the radio show Science Friday. But in developing artificial intelligence, as with nuclear weapons, "we really want to get it right the first time, because it might be the only chance we have," he said.

On the one hand, AI has the potential to achieve enormous good in society, experts say. "This technology could save thousands of lives," whether by preventing car accidents or avoiding errors in medicine, Eric Horvitz, managing director of Microsoft Research lab in Seattle, said on the show. The downside is the possibility of creating a computer program capable of continually improving itself that "we might lose control of," he added."

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30290540

"Mr Carpenter says we are a long way from having the computing power or developing the algorithms needed to achieve full artificial intelligence, but believes it will come in the next few decades.
"We cannot quite know what will happen if a machine exceeds our own intelligence, so we can't know if we'll be infinitely helped by it, or ignored by it and sidelined, or conceivably destroyed by it," he says.

But he is betting that AI is going to be a positive force.

Prof Hawking is not alone in fearing for the future.
In the short term, there are concerns that clever machines capable of undertaking tasks done by humans until now will swiftly destroy millions of jobs.

In his BBC interview, Prof Hawking also talks of the benefits and dangers of the internet.

He quotes the director of GCHQ's warning about the net becoming the command centre for terrorists: "More must be done by the internet companies to counter the threat, but the difficulty is to do this without sacrificing freedom and privacy."

Supreme Court does the correct thing

Charges should be laid against the dangerous lunatics who whipped this up then the craven dogs who wouldnÔÇÖt do their respective Ministerial duties.

  "small tactical nukes"
Posted by: C_T_Russell - 05-10-2022, 11:14 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (6)

If Putin is stupid enough to use them on Ukraine, that would either mean the end of Russia as we know it, or possibly WW3.
I dont know what he refers to as "small" nukes, but is probably something close in power to a 25 kiloton Hiroshima bomb.
That would still be devastating and would force NATO to intervene like they said would happen should nukes be used by Russia.
I dont know if it would mean NATO sends nukes back in return, but I think that would be a last resort effort.
Either way, things are not looking good for putin, despite mobilization.
Ukraine is still continuing to push back russians with their counteroffensive, and are moving ever closer to Kherson. Also they are making good progress in the north east.

  Tree Problems
Posted by: Oldfellah - 05-10-2022, 09:37 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (15)

The neighbours tree is leaning against my fence and branches are overhanging my section, every winter I have to rake up all these bloody leaves that drop on my side and Im sick of it, 12 years of doing this is enough. The problem is they rent the place out. I have the owners number but always get his answer machine and he never returns calls and the tenants dont want me to know who the agents they deal through are, so besides getting a chainsaw and going and cutting the thing down myself are there any other options?

Just a heads up that if you see the site go offline, its due to me performing an upgrade.

I cant schedule a time so may happen without notice as i fit it in with my work schedule.
There will be other tweaks over time which may involve us taking the site down to install various addons and plugins to the system.
Thanks for using TMMB,

  Gmail deleting emails automatically
Posted by: Admin - 03-10-2022, 03:13 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (7)

This is a weird one, a mate of mine says he is not getting any emails from one of his friends, turns out they are both using gmail.
After testing and sending out an email from my ISP account, I find it gets through, but I tested an email from my gmail account and it arrives and shows for a split second in the inbox and then vanishes.
No third party email clients using it and seems to only be gmail addresses that are doing this, there are no filters or blacklists enabled that I can see.

  Home schooling on increase
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-10-2022, 02:28 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (15)

There are concerns that it may be linked to covid & misinformation.

If that is the case then it could lead to problems in the future, depending on how & what these kids are taught.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/educati...oring-them

  • "The number of students being homeschooled is skyrocketing, with more than 2000 entering homeschool since the start of this year.

  • The biggest increases are in Northland and Southland.

  • Some educators are worried parents have pulled their children out of school after falling victim to Covid disinformation and because of Covid anxiety.

  • Concerns have also been raised about a lack of ÔÇ£check and balancesÔÇØ to make sure homeschooled students are well-educated.
The number of homeschoolers in New Zealand has jumped by 80% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, prompting concerns about the standard of home education.
Auckland principal Stephen Lethbridge said heÔÇÖd previously seen the ministry approve homeschool applications when parents were ÔÇ£functionally illiterateÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£WeÔÇÖd write to the ministry and say we donÔÇÖt think that is a good idea, and their homeschooling application was still granted,ÔÇØ he said.
More than 2000 students have entered homeschool since the start of the year and some educators say Covid-19 disinformation is adding fuel to the fire."
