  Fireworks!
Posted by: Oldfellah - 05-11-2022, 03:37 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (14)

When I was a kid I used to love fireworks as I'm sure many kids today do as well BUT I don't love them going off from about 7.pm (when its not even dark) until all hours of the morning for the past few nights, whats the friggin point? NOVEMBER 5th is when to let them off and be responsible about it. I'm just about drifting off to sleep when (bang bang bang and whizzz) of bloody fireworks make sure I'm wide awake.
Am I being a grump?
And for those of you that say yes I am, I know I am so there  Tongue Tongue

  Aboriginal boy murdered
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-11-2022, 02:41 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Cassius Turvey & some friends were beaten badly & he later died. it seems to have been a racially motivated attack. Even worse for his Mother, his Father had died recently.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-63467134

"Three weeks ago, Aboriginal teenager Cassius Turvey was walking home from his Perth school with friends when a stranger allegedly pulled up in a utility vehicle and told the group to run.
What happened next has shocked Australia and posed hard questions, many say, about pervasive racism in the country.
Passengers in the car allegedly chased down the Aboriginal boys - who were wearing their school uniforms - before two were violently attacked.
One victim was an already injured 13-year-old whose own crutches were used to beat him, causing bruising to his face, authorities say.
The other was 15-year-old Cassius, who police believe was assaulted with a metal pole.
The Noongar Yamatji boy died 10 days later, after suffering seizures and two strokes from his serious head injuries.

Warning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers: this article contains images of someone who has died.
A 21-year-old white man, Jack Steven James Brearley, has been charged with murdering Cassius and assaulting the other boy."

Putin allows former prisoners to join his army
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-11-2022, 02:33 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

What a complete & utter bastard Putin is. The sooner one of his cronies puts an end to his leadership, the better.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-63517680

"Convicted murderers and drug dealers who have recently left prison in Russia face being conscripted to fight in Ukraine under a change to the law.
President Vladimir Putin amended the legislation on calling up reservists to include men convicted of serious crimes who recently left prison.
Former prisoners convicted of sex crimes against children or terrorism are still excluded from serving.
Russian soldiers have been accused of crimes during the invasion of Ukraine."

Christopher Luxon accused of 'fantastical thinking'
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-11-2022, 02:16 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

Because he's suggested that our warming seas could be included in carbon accounting to offset rising emissions.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...et-comment

"The plans have angered some rural representative bodies, and Luxon suggested New ZealandÔÇÖs vast oceans could be used to offset carbon by ÔÇ£using the ocean as a massive carbon sink ... if we change the way we count itÔÇØ to Tararua residents on Wednesday.

But NationalÔÇÖs climate spokesperson, Scott Simpson, said his leader meant all options should be on the table to remove carbon from the environment, including creating kelp farms in the ocean."

I'm wondering about that 'if we change the way we count it' comment - is changing the way things are counted a tiny bit radical? Might not other things also be very different if we change the way we count them; university exams perhaps? Driving test? Sports?
Elections?

The American 'sanctity of life' laws
Posted by: Lilith7 - 04-11-2022, 01:14 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (11)

I woke up early this morning & couldn't get back to sleep, & started thinking about the current situation in Texas & the other anti abortion states. I remembered a while ago, coming across a joking post in which the idea was put forward that, if these laws are genuinely about the sanctity of life then surely they must also be aware of the fact that male masturbation wastes that precious material responsible for starting life, sperm. And that therefore, very clearly male masturbation must be made illegal.

It was a non serious idea, but when we consider how far technology has advanced since then, it can be seen that constant surveillance of men & boys (especially teenage boys) can & must be undertaken. And it really needn't be that difficult.

If the East German Stasi could manage to spy on its citizens with hidden listening devices back in those times, imagine what could be done today.
Tiny disguised cameras in every man & boy's room ( & of course, in toilets could be used) or drones with a camera could be deployed to track each male for 24 hour surveillance to follow each individual at all times. With, of course, an extremely loud alarm just in case it might look as though the person under surveillance might be about to waste that precious material; because naturally the sanctity of life must take precedence over the privacy of any individual.

That would of course, include the men responsible for making these 'sanctity of life' laws since they surely wouldn't want to exempt themselves from such an important law.

.
I believe that American women should immediately approach their state law makers & inform them that this must  immediately be done as a matter of urgency, in order to preserve the sanctity of life, & naturally, since anyone in those states may report any woman they suspect of having an abortion to authorities, the same will apply to any woman who suspects any man of wasting the sanctity of life.

I wonder how long it might be before their laws change....

  Pettiness over red house
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-11-2022, 01:30 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (28)

This really is pathetic; their house, their colour choice. Its a beautiful shade of red, & in a world which needs more colour to escape the dreary grey & boring beige I think they've done really well.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed...flash-stre

"A newly-painted bach in a multi-million dollar street in Mount Maunganui has sparked controversy with a neighbour comparing the scheme to ÔÇ£mob coloursÔÇØ or a ÔÇ£brothelÔÇØ, and complaining it could bring down the value of houses in one of the MountÔÇÖs most desirable streets.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named posted on Mount MaunganuiÔÇÖs community message board ÔÇ£Can one object to your neighbour painting their house bright red? Mob red with black gates.ÔÇØ

She said that she had seen the colour swatches beforehand and asked for it not to be painted that colour as it would ÔÇ£devalue our street.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£I am concerned

the colours are associating to gangs and also the devaluation of other houses in the street,ÔÇØ she said.
She
┬átold Stuff that she had complained to council but they ÔÇ£didnÔÇÖt careÔÇØ.

The owner of the little red house, Hamilton woman Lyn Buckley, couldnÔÇÖt understand why her happy holiday spot and its jovial shade had upset people.
ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs been so stressful listening to talk of it being like gangs ÔÇô itÔÇÖs silly that someone would go to that extent just because they donÔÇÖt like a colour.ÔÇØ
Buckley said one neighbour had contacted her asking her to chanasking her to change it.

ÔÇ£We are not going to change it. I tried to talk to them and am just gutted that it has come to this.ÔÇØ

How can this not be a crime
Posted by: king1 - 01-11-2022, 12:55 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (17)

Quote:a Russian Kiwi has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Russian soldiers who are illegally invading Ukraine.

Auckland woman Antonina Ovchinnikova runs a Russian language channel on Telegram ÔÇô an encrypted messaging service ÔÇô where she posts Russian nationalist propaganda and updates on the invasion of Ukraine.

Ovchinnikova, who has lived in New Zealand for 10 years, has now raised 1.5 million Russian rubles (about NZ$43,000) and bought gun sights, machine gun mufflers and even drones for the soldiers.

In an interview, the woman justified raising money for the units because she believes the Russian military is invading Ukraine for ÔÇ£denazificationÔÇØ and that Russia owns Ukraine historically and therefore is entitled to occupy its land.

Ovchinnikova said it did not worry her if the gear she raised money for went to units that were killing civilians, because she believes they are Nazis, and she couldnÔÇÖt control what the units were doing in Ukraine.

Her beliefs are standard Kremlin propaganda espoused by Vladimir Putin himself as a justification for the invasion and have no basis in fact.

Ovchinnikova asks her followers for rubles and for the money to be sent to Russian bank accounts, including some held by Sberbank, a bank which is the subject of sanctions by New Zealand.

Hard to believe she has committed no crime here... I guess it would require Putin to be officially labelled a terrorist or found guilty of war crimes before anyone supporting him could be held accountable...

  NZ suspends dialogue with Iran
Posted by: Lilith7 - 31-10-2022, 02:29 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (8)

Finally, the govt has been able to suspend dialogue with Iran once it was certain those two 'influencers' were out of Iran.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/477...o-violence

"New Zealand is suspending its bilateral Human Rights Dialogue with Iran as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta announce New Zealand's response to anti-regime protests crackdown in Iran.
The two countries first established dialogue in 2018 to discuss human rights concerns. The first session was held in 2021 and the next was due to take place later this year.

But foreign affairs minister Nanaia Mahuta said bilateral approaches on human rights are no longer tenable when Iran is denying basic human rights and violently suppressing protests.

There have been widespread protests in Iran for weeks, in response to the death of 22 year old Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being arrested for violating the country's dress code.

The government had so far been quiet on the issue - with recent news of two New Zealanders, Topher Richwhite and Bridget Thackwray arriving safely in New Zealand after having their movements restricted by Iranian authorities."

  REALLY?

Teen allegedly at centre of week-long Christchurch crime spree faces 81 charges

A 14-year-old who faces 81 charges for allegedly cutting off his bracelet and embarking on a week-long crime spree has been scolded by a Youth Court judge. (Oh WoW how frightening)
His charges include assaulting with intent to injure, unlawfully takes motor vehicle, aggravated robbery and theft, police have confirmed.

Judge McMeekenÔÇÖs message for the youth on Monday morning was clear: ÔÇ£YouÔÇÖre harming people.ÔÇØ
ÔÇ£Why are you here again?... What did you think was going to happen when you cut off your bracelet?ÔÇØ, Judge McMeeken asked the boy.

She told him that if he continued to make bad decisions, heÔÇÖd be locked up for long time.
ÔÇ£YouÔÇÖre a good man. You have potential...you need to make something off yourself.ÔÇØ

  Windows updates
Posted by: SueDonim - 31-10-2022, 08:29 AM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (6)

Windows tries to do updates but fails. It says "Updates are available. WeÔÇÖll download them when you are not using a metered connection, or you can download 781.79 MB using your current data connection (charges might apply). You might still need to connect to unmetered WiFi for some updates."

I don't know why it expects a desktop computer on a metered connection to move to where it might get unmetered wifi. My question is whether the incomplete update is a risk (I also have Norton paid version running). The updates that are stalling are:

2022-08 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5012170)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - v5.106 (KB890830)
2022-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64 (KB5018544)
2022-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5018410)
NVIDIA - Display - 30.0.15.1215

It also tells me that my computer doesn't meet the minimum needed for Win 11. Which is a bit weird because although it's a few years old it's better spec than many currently on the market. I'm thinking about upgrading but haven't yet decided which way to go.

In the meantime, do I really need to force the nearly 800mb update and use up all my data? Our usage is mainly the same few websites, including YouTube, and uploading photos.

Thanks
