  Earthquake again...
Posted by: nzoomed - 03-02-2023, 08:46 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (8)

2AM this morning, woke me up again.
Same spot in TeAroha.
I wonder how many more we will get?
I thought they may have been over!
This is the 4th quake I've felt and this is the third big one we have had. Always seems to happen at night or early hours of the morning when we are all in bed!

Oz changes its vile 501 laws

And about bloody time, too.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...eportation

"The deportations of the New Zealanders ÔÇô despite in some cases tenuous connections to New Zealand ÔÇô have provoked frustration in the trans-Tasman relationship for years.

Rather than changing section 501 of AustraliaÔÇÖs Migration Act, the Australian immigration minister, Andrew Giles, has issued a ministerial direction to his department to pay greater attention to the strength, duration and nature of a personÔÇÖs connection to the Australian community.

ÔÇ£Some of them have been there since they were very young children, and sending them to New Zealand when they have no connections here other than a very historic one isnÔÇÖt really a fair or just outcome,ÔÇØ Hipkins said."

  Ciggies and Grog and photography
Posted by: Kenj - 02-02-2023, 04:28 PM - Forum: PC World Chat - Replies (27)

Some years ago, late 1980's, I gave up smoking and drinking so as to be able to take up photography where I setup an outside shed into a darkroom lab where I practiced B+W photography and later, a rudimentary colour processing system using tubes and a warm water bath. Temperature was extremely critical with colour printing. I spent a fair bit on my hobby so didn't weaken with the above-mentioned evils again. Cost me heaps but have loved the hobby ever since.

Up until a month ago after moving into a retirement village just before Christmas!!

Nothing to do now, so I am re-finding the pleasure of Bundaberg Rum and Coke again  Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin  I have a devilish lot of Flybuys points so am looking at getting some Gin and Tonic as well. The Rum, by the way was in a cupboard, right at the back which I found when packing to move. I must have bought it from our previous home when we shifted 27 years ago.

Oh, how easily we slip into dangerous ways again! SWMBO say that as I am in my 81st year, who cares.   Big Grin Big Grin

Am I wise to do this or will it lead to my soul being taken over by the "Demon Drink"

Ken  Confused

PS didn't find any ciggies thank God! Couldn't afford them now!

Prisoners may get time off for donating organs
Posted by: Lilith7 - 02-02-2023, 01:56 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (15)

Grotesque idea - while there are some benefits to this, its  far too open to abuse.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023...-donations

"If it passes into law, then the ÔÇ£program shall allow eligible incarcerated individuals to gain not less than 60 and not more than 365 day reduction in the length of their committed sentenceÔÇØ. Along with the new program, a committee would be established composed of five members responsible for overseeing the scheme. The committee would also decide on eligibility standards for incarcerated individuals interested in the program and ÔÇ£the amount of bone marrow and organ(s) donated to earn oneÔÇÖs sentence to be commutedÔÇØ.
Currently, the US Federal Bureau of Prisons allows organ donations by inmates only if the recipient is a member of their immediate family, but many state prisons, including those in Massachusetts, have no pathway to organ or bone marrow donation."

Smile Wireless access in shed
Posted by: Excalibur - 02-02-2023, 09:32 AM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (7)

As title suggests, I want to extend wireless access to my shed which is out of range probably because it's a tin shed plus the physical distance.
So I've run a CAT6 cable from my existing Skinny modem/router in the house...

What is ideal for a wireless transmitter type device in the shed on the end of that CAt6?
What are the cheap solutions, hacks or workarounds?
Will one of my old wireless modems work for the shed, plugged in there? I should have an old Spark modem somewhere..
What are the pros and cons? I suppose any device on the Cat6 will be effectively be on my home network so passwords, Ip addresses and those considerations apply?
How do I make the whole system seamless so I can walk back and forth between house and shed with no issues?

This must have been done a thousand times, much must have been worked out. Best most reliable ways and the like.
Thanks for any thoughts, tips etc. Keen to hear experiences

  The Hydrogen Line
Posted by: Roscoe - 02-02-2023, 09:30 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

An amateur radio enthusiast picked up a radio transmission on 1420 Mhz, a frequency called the hydrogen line. He speculated that it may have been an alien race attempting to communicate.

When you zap hydrogen you give it energy and that is the frequency it emits.

Hydrogen accounts for 73% of all the matter in the universe. Scientists can energise hydrogen atoms to make them move and when they move they give off a frequency that can travel vast distances through space. The scientists believe that alien races might use this particular frequency because it is one of the most abundant emitters of radio waves in the universe. so if anyone was looking they might expect to find signals exactly on the hydrogen line.

So like the radio ham you might like to listen on 1420 Mhz and you never know what you might hear.

  Caroma Toilet Cistern

Anyone knows how to adjust the water level of this Caroma Cistern?

It's different from those older ones with a float valve where I can just adjust it with a screw driver, so easy.

ChatGPT it's incredible and scary at the same time
Posted by: nzoomed - 01-02-2023, 08:56 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (16)

I've never paid alot of attention to AI in the past

Most previous efforts have never really been anything exciting, but ChatGPT is a gamechanger.
We are still only in its early development phases, who knows where it will go in another 5 to 10 years.
I wish I had this when I was at school, could have done my homework in 10 minutes!
We have just witnessed a huge disruption in the tech sector, if anyone has ever used siri or Alexa  this chatbot can do far more complex tasks.
My friend has been using it to write arduino code and it actually works and gives you a description on how to assemble it.
It's nuts, but still needs a way to go, some answers can at times be garbage but shows you what this is tech is capable of.
