| What is a "shot tower"? Don't ask Simon Dallow. He does not know. |

If you have been watching the midday news on TV1 you would have seen the story about the shot tower in Mt Eden and the possibility of it being blown down, so they evacuated people from around it just in case, despite the fact that it has been there for decades with no concern.
What got me about that story was that Simon Dallow admitted on air to the entire country that he did not know what a shot tower was. Alright. I accept that, but it is one thing to be ignorant of a fact but it is another thing entirely to admit your nescience to the nation. You would think that if he did not know - and you cannot be expected to know everything - that he would ask somebody instead of showing he was unenlightened.
And I'm certain there will be many of you who do not know what a shot tower is, so I will elucidate.
Everyone will be aware of the shot in a shot gun cartridge - especially farmers, but how many people know how it is made? Small pieces of molten lead are dropped from the top of the tower into a vat of water below. As they drop they form themselves into small perfectly spherical balls. And that is how shot is made. Simple, really.
You would have thought that someone would have told Simon Dallow. After all, I'm certain that TVNZ is seen as an authority by many and so to show your ignorance like that is just not in keeping with TVNZ and how it is regarded.
I think that you will agree - it's bad form and not what you would expect from TVNZ.

Because I looked at Stuff in relation to the other thread I posted on, I also found this https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/13121234...ivers-test.
If people have a problem keeping up with road code knowledge then regular testing might help, but the problems quoted are things that every driver knows. Jumping red lights, texting while driving, crossing the centre line, passing on the inside, and so on, are all basic wrongs. The author's proposal for testing wouldn't help one iota. It's attitude that is the problem and always has been. Implementing testing just makes another huge cost on the innocent instead of hitting the guilty. More fines for transgressions would help get money into the public coffers and make the roads safer.
We don't need testing. Unfortunately we need enforcement.

We keep a jar of biscuit treats - used for rewards and bribes. I had the effrontery to buy a new brand and Mr Fussy wouldn't eat them. Annoying because I'd taken the trouble to make sure they were meat-based and not just grain. Mmmm.
I figured that the problem wasn't that he didn't like them, rather that it smelled wrong and he didn't recognise them as food. Mixing them up with the old biscuits didn't work. He also refused the "contaminated" old biscuits.
So, I very slowly introduced them with his meal foods. First a ground up sprinkle mixed in, then a whole biscuit wrapped in meat, then two.... and so on. A few false starts when I did too many too soon and got the "what's going on here?" look. I kept a count - one to me every time he ate one, one to him for every one left in the dish. We were about even for a couple of weeks then I started making headway. And now four weeks later, he's happy eating the dry biscuits on their own.
And the brand that caused all this fuss - Fussy Cat.

If you remember your history lessons from school you will know that he was an explorer who went to Antarctica, and amongst other things he took a bottle of whisky. For some reason he left it there and many years later when other explorers followed in his footsteps they discovered his whisky and noted that it was not frozen. How can that be?
Due to the alcohol content of whisky,┬áyou wonÔÇÖt be able to freeze it. That being said, storing your whisky┬áin the freezer is an excellent way to preserve it for a long period of time. Simply place your bottle of whisky┬áin the freezer and ensure the cap is tightly screwed. Freezing pint of alcohol is -25c The freezing point of wine is┬á-4 to -9┬░C, depending on its alcohol content. While water freezes at 0┬░C, alcohol freezes at -144┬░C. So logically, higher alcohol contents in wine result in lower freezing temperatures.
Personally I would not want to preserve my whisky for that long. I would prefer to drink it! Nevertheless, I just thought that you may find that interesting.
