  Mushroom ID
Posted by: harm_less - 12-02-2023, 09:13 AM - Forum: Gardening & DIY - Replies (9)

We discovered a good crop of mushrooms growing on an old poplar shelter belt on our Taranaki property yesterday and we need a positive ID on them before we commit to a sauteed mushroom feed. We suspect they are Tawaka/Cyclocybe parasitica based on their appearance and location. Any mycologists or experienced foragers out there?

Star Onedrive went haywire over new phone
Posted by: Excalibur - 11-02-2023, 08:34 PM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (2)

The story:
While boxing day sales were on, I upgraded my 5yo J7 Galaxy for a new S21. Actually I didn't use it till my gorilla grip cover arrived. Old butter fingers would surely drop it and crack the screen. Angry
Also had to chase up a USB-C cable because the double ended USB-C cable supplied didn't plug in nowhere at my place. Confused While I was at it, I got a wireless charger as well. All minor details really..

So while I waited for these things to arrive I decided to ready the S21. Samsung have an app to transfer all the settings, programs etc. Seemed to work good. Lucky phone came with 50% charge. The program offered to transfer all the photos to the new phone. Seemed like a good idea but this might have been my undoing. All was well until I switched Onedrive on in the S21. Almost instantly Onedrive announced it was full (to my limit of 5gig). I deleted some pics on Onedrive but it responded by complaining of being full. More slashing and burning of pics and eventually third time lucky, Onedrive calmed down.

OK, so I think I shouldn't have transferred all the photos phone to phone. Onedrive merely saw all these photos to back up but wasn't sophisticated enough to understand they were already backed up.

So where did I go wrong? As importantly, what is the ideal method to switch phones and get all the settings etc without the chaos.

Thanks for any responses...

  The Great Flood
Posted by: Roscoe - 11-02-2023, 10:38 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

I'm certain everybody has heard of the world flood mentioned in The Bible. It is said that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights.

Whether you believe The Bible account or not it seems that in ancient times there was indeed a year long flood. It is written in the histories of Egypt, China, Iraq and India to name but a few that have similar flood stories.

The flood was an event so profound it is remembered in folklore and texts in cultures around the world.

Noah spent decades building the ark. He told everyone about the flood but only his family believed him.

But I wonder if by "the world" they really mean the known world and that the flood did not cover the entire globe?

And will it happen again? Well you might think that it was a mini version that affected Auckland recently, but according to the version in The Bible mankind was assured that it would not happen again. Here's hoping.

  Earthquakes in Turkey & Syria
Posted by: Lilith7 - 08-02-2023, 06:18 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (20)

They've had so  many now; two really strong ones & lots of aftershocks. More than 7,800 dead so far.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/64533954

"More than 7,800 people have died... across both countries after two huge earthquakes on Monday, amid warnings from the World Health Organization that the toll may rise dramatically as rescuers find more victims. More than 23 million people could be affected by the disaster

Emergency workers... worked through another freezing-cold night, in a desperate race against the clock to save people trapped beneath rubble after thousands of buildings collapsed

Relatives of victims... armed with pickaxes and crowbars joined frantic rescue efforts in one of the worst-hit Turkish cities, as anguished families said rescue services took too long to respond in some areas."

Router choice?
Currently I have a Huawei HG 659 router with Voyager,  currently Voyager supply Huawei DG8245V either to rent $10 per month or to buy for $150.
So does it matter which router you use or would there be an improvement with another make with out breaking the bank?

He appears to have put his foot in it, with his 'little experiment' comment - but claims that 'it wasn't meant to be belittling.' With any sort of luck, he'll continue in that vein & manage to lose them even more votes.

You'd expect a leader of an opposition party to know better than to make such a disparaging comment & then trying to backtrack & pretend that it 'wasn't belittling'...he surely cannot hope to claim that it was complimentary.
Even a politician couldn't get away with that, so keep up the good work, Christopher Luxon!   Rolleyes Rolleyes Big Grin Big Grin

  America shoots down Chinese balloon
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-02-2023, 02:49 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (6)

Given that this is the second to be spotted over the US, what did the Chinese think would happen?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64524105

"The US has shot down a giant Chinese balloon that it says has been spying on key military sites across America.
The Department of Defense confirmed its fighter jets brought down the balloon over US territorial waters.
China's foreign ministry later expressed "strong dissatisfaction and protest against the US's use of force to attack civilian unmanned aircraft".
Footage on US TV networks showed the balloon falling to the sea after a small explosion.
Defence officials told US media the debris landed in 47ft (14m) of water - shallower than they had expected - near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The military is now trying to recover debris which is spread over seven miles (11km). Two naval ships, including one with a heavy crane for recovery, are in the area.
In a statement a few hours later, the Chinese foreign ministry said: "The Chinese side has repeatedly informed the US side after verification that the airship is for civilian use and entered the US due to force majeure - it was completely an accident."

The Chinese authorities have denied it is a spying aircraft, and instead said it was a weather ship blown astray."

  Assassinating a designer?
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 05-02-2023, 09:18 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (3)

The fashion world is known to be rife with fakers and gossipmongers, eager to knife any tall poppy in the back for the laughs. In an industry where huge chunks of the cachet for wearing the best rise out of the price tags it might be understandable for petty jealousies to bring out the bitchiness, but then, how often is an emperor actually shown to be flogging off a relabeled Shein to the rich and famous, who honestly, should know better...

  Difficult buyer
Posted by: nzoomed - 03-02-2023, 01:35 PM - Forum: Trademe Discussion - Replies (14)

Just sold a car part, they asked if they could offer me $500 which i accepted, now they say they found the same part at a wreckers for hallf the price and asking if I would match it?
Should I just walk away from the trade? Ive told them that this part has been refirbushed with a new motor and that I doubt the used part at the wreckers has had this done, I also explained the costs involved.
Why bother bidding?
