For anyone interested this article by Andrea Vance is interesting, though he does seem to be someone whose views can be rather contradictory. Imo anyone keen to cut benefits to those who are already worse off than anyone else should never have even a shred of power over other people, so that's slightly worrying.

Weve had the ability to be in this beautiful country, we've had free education, a good healthcare system. We're the lucky ones  and if youre given these gifts they don't really mean a lot unless you can take what you've been given and help improve the lives of other people.
At its core, these are also true blue National values: a belief in equality of opportunity, or giving people the chance to succeed.
What has confused people, is that Luxon has occasionally strayed into more hardline territory, with a more punitive approach to poverty, welfare and social problems. Last year he accused beneficiaries of ÔÇ£bottom feeding.ÔÇØ┬áHe has advocated cutting off benefits and Working for Families support for people that refused to immunise their children, and blamed truancy on teachers.

Does this strike anyone else as deeply unfair & in dire need of changing - preferably tomorrow, or is it fine with everyone else?
Very canny though - govt saying its 'just for the information' because there's an election not far off so as not to put the wind up the opposition while doing precisely that.
Cue ACT paranoia...

"IR study finds wealthiest Kiwis pay about 10% tax, once all income and GST is included. For the average Kiwi, the figure is about 20%.
The Treasury says wealthiest 1% own more than a quarter of the countryÔÇÖs wealth.
The findings are expected to trigger a debate about tax reform.
The wealthiest New Zealanders pay on average only 8.9% tax on their income, according to a long-awaited study of 311 rich-listers conducted by Inland Revenue.
Revenue Minister David Parker said the low tax rate was explained by the fact they received about 80% of their income in form of capital gains, much of which was earned through trusts and companies and which was often untaxed.
A separate Treasury study, also released on Wednesday, estimated that the average Kiwi effectively paid 20.2% tax on their income, once GST and benefits they received from the Government were taken into account.
There has been speculation that Parker hopes the revelation on how much tax the wealthy pay on their income will increase the publicÔÇÖs appetite for a broader tax on capital gains or a wealth tax or inheritance tax.
However, Parker said he wanted ÔÇ£to be clear today that I am not announcing any new tax policy or tax switchÔÇØ.
LabourÔÇÖs tax policy would be announced before the election, he said.
ÔÇ£While views differ on what constitutes a fair tax system, they need to be grounded in real facts and real data,ÔÇØ he said.
"For the first time, we now have that real data, thanks to this report.ÔÇØ
Parker said IRÔÇÖs report was not about attacking the very wealthy, but said in response to questions that he did intend to fix the tax system.
ÔÇ£I am on record as saying we need a fair tax system,ÔÇØ he said, acknowledging he had voiced support for a comprehensive tax on capital gains in the past, but adding that was ÔÇ£not necessarily the best or only solutionÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£You have to look to countries like the US to find extremes that are similar to ours,ÔÇØ he said."

I have got this old PC:
MB:  Asrock Z77 Extreme4   with onboard Graphic, and Sapphire RX580 graphic card installed.
I could start up the PC by connecting to the onboard graphic without having to unplug the RX580 card.
Of course, I could also start up by connecting to the RX580.  In short, I could connect to either of the graphic port.
All along, I have this in mind that I need to unplug the video card (RX580) before I could use the onboard graphic!   Otherwise, the PC won't start up.
Am I outdated or there's some setting in the BIOS that allows to use either onboard or added graphic?

Anzac Day: The playing of The Last Post

Anzac Day has been all over the news tonight, as it should be and The Last Post has been heard many times. But why don't they stick with tradition and play The Last Post on a bugle? All the renditions I have heard tonight are played on a trumpet and it just does not sound the same.
The sound of a trumpet is just too pure, whereas the sound of the bugle is very raw and sounds completely different.
So why do they play the last post on a trumpet? Doesn't anyone know how to play a bugle these days? Sacrilege!

Only city birthing centre to close

As far as I'm aware, every other city of a similar size to CHCH has at least one birthing centre but there's presently just the one here & despite a petition with over 30 thousand signatures, the idiot bureaucrats have decided we don't need one & it must close.
Women can after all give birth at what is referred to as CHCH Women's hospital  but they will be chucked out within hours of giving birth & sent miles away to either Rolleston birthing centre (south of CHCH) or north to Rangiora, neither of which is ideal especially for first time mums.
it could also be extremely dangerous under some circumstances, but then that apparently doesn't seem to matter. While there will eventually be another birthing centre opened in the city 'later this year' there's no certainty about when that might be.
The concern is that its all rather vague & there's always the chance that it may never happen.
https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/4885...ll-through
"Christchurch's St George's Hospital maternity unit is closing in June, at the end of its contract with Te Whatu Ora.
Rata Midwives organised a petition backed by 30,000 people to try to stop the centre from closing last year.
Hospital chief executive Blair Roxborough said it had not been able to agree to a contract extension with the health agency.
"Today we have advised our maternity staff and the Midwives Union MERAS that we are sadly closing our maternity centre and disestablishing all maternity related roles."
The nationwide midwife shortage had meant the hospital had struggled to maintain consistent, safe staffing levels, Roxborough said.
Alternatives distant from communities - midwives' union
But she said news of the unit's closure was sad and it would have been ideal to keep it open until Te Whatu Ora's new central city primary birthing unit was open, which was expected to be late this year.
St George's currently provided the only primary birthing unit in Christchurch, with the nearest alternative half an hour away, by car, Ovens said.
"There are other options but for Christchurch-based families, they are away from their community which is not ideal for women or midwives."
Rata Midwives midwife Sheena Ross told Checkpoint she and others who had signed the petition were "incredibly sad" and "disappointed" that the hospital felt it could not heed what the community wanted.
"We're still reeling, we're reeling from this decision. There's going to be a lot of women and a lot of babies that are going to have their choices removed."

Anyone notice how TM sometimes wants to think for you automatically and just narrow your search down to a particular category without actually asking?
I find it quite annoying, Im not sure if there is a setting that turns this off or not, need to take a look. Basically what happens is at times you will search for any random item and it will direct you to a search in motors and you have to manually switch categories yourself.

Indonesian sex workers organise

Good for this woman - given that there will almost certainly be a need for sex workers, this is a good move since the less its hidden, the more likely medical help will be accessed when needed.
https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2023/4...igma-shame
"Medan, Indonesia ÔÇô┬áMarta Dewi, a housewife in Central Java province, became an advocate for IndonesiaÔÇÖs sex workers by accident.
Dewi lives in Bandungan, a small mountain town known for drawing thousands of sex workers from all over Indonesia. Living side-by-side with the women trying to make a living, Dewi empathised with their situation. ÔÇ£IÔÇÖve never worked as a sex worker but I care about my environment and, in my area, there are so many sex workers,ÔÇØ Dewi told Al Jazeera. ÔÇ£Once I got to know them, I realised that they did these jobs out of necessity and shouldnÔÇÖt be judged.ÔÇØ
In 2015, Dewi founded PERKAWIS, or the Association of Tourist Workers, a union to support sex workers in the region and educate them about health, financial issues and the law. The name was chosen in consideration of the stigma associated with sex work and to sound palatable to religious groups in the region.
Dewi decided to set up PERKAWIS after a sex worker died of an overdose and was discovered in a boarding house close to Bandungan with only a fake identity card on them.
ÔÇ£It was so difficult for us because we couldnÔÇÖt find their family,ÔÇØ Dewi recalled. ÔÇ£There were a number of other cases too, where a sex worker died and we had no data about them. Now we compile the data of the workers who come here so that we know who to contact if there is a problem.ÔÇØ
Activists say the tendency of sex workers to move away from family and friends only adds to the need for groups like PERKAWIS that can offer support.
Dewi said PERKAWIS does not have a set number of members as the turnover of sex workers in the area is high, but that she typically has about 100 sex workers in her database at any given time.
ÔÇ£I just do as much as I can do, within the conditions that I have to work with,ÔÇØ she said. ÔÇ£I just try to care about the people around me.ÔÇØ
