If a kid...
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 22-05-2023, 10:40 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (1)

... say a preteen, brutalised by abuse and parental addictions, responds to an adult attack and kills a parent in defense of themself and a sibling, are they responsible for a criminal act? And if, as a result of that extended trauma they go on to more violence are they then responsible for that too?

Or are they so broken the community has no alternative but to put them down? Child, or not...

Australian police won't release footage of tasering elderly woman
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-05-2023, 01:44 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

Even with dementia, a serrated knife & a walking frame its difficult to understand how much of a threat someone of that age could possibly be to police officers.  Rolleyes Dodgy

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-65657999

"Australian police say they will not release bodycam footage of the moment an elderly woman with dementia was Tasered by an officer.
Clare Nowland, 95, is in critical condition after an officer discharged the weapon at a care home in Cooma, New South Wales (NSW), on Wednesday.
Police say Ms Nowland had moved towards them "at a slow pace" with a knife."

Jennifer Lawrence documentary on the Taliban
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-05-2023, 01:38 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

This looks interesting, & you really have to wonder why it is that since the misogynistic Taliban took power again no western countries have tried to intervene to any great extent.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-65624203

"The producer is the Oscar-winning actress, Jennifer Lawrence, who is telling the BBC why this moment in the film is so significant to her.
"My heart was beating so fast watching these women defy the Taliban," Lawrence says. "You don't see this side of the story, women fighting back, in the news everyday and it's an important part of our film, and the stories of these women."

Ciarrocchi says that Lawrence "had a seismic reaction to the fall of Kabul in 2021 because the circumstances were so dire for women".
"And she said, 'We've got to give somebody a platform to tell this story in a meaningful way.'"
That somebody was Sahra Mani, a documentary maker who co-founded the independent Kabul production company, Afghan Doc House.

Both Lawrence and Ciarrocchi had watched her critically-acclaimed documentary A Thousand Girls Like Me, which profiles a 23-year-old Afghan woman who goes on national television to expose sexual abuse by her father, after being ignored by her family and the police.

With Mani and the other women featured now all out of the country, the producers felt comfortable submitting Bread and Roses for wider distribution, starting at Cannes.
Ciarrocchi and Lawrence say their next challenge is to get the film in front of a large audience - not always easy when the story is a snapshot of an ongoing and devastating conflict."

Looking for a good free video download program
Posted by: badjer27 - 20-05-2023, 11:46 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (2)

I use 4K Video Downloader for downloading video clips of subjects IÔÇÖm studying.┬á ItÔÇÖs excellent for many websites like YouTube, but many websites just wonÔÇÖt respond, and I canÔÇÖt find any straightforward way to do this.
YT-Dlp has been recommended, but I would prefer a GUI based program.
Any free and easy-to-use program that will let me do that would be great.┬á Many programs claim they will work with ÔÇ£hundreds of websitesÔÇØ, but usually donÔÇÖt.┬á
Any constructive and practical help appreciated.

Why do women rip holes in their jeans?
Posted by: Roscoe - 20-05-2023, 07:41 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

I find it hard to understand why some women destroy their jeans by ripping holes in them. Yesterday I saw one with gaping holes in each knee! She could have put her knees through the holes! But why?

Alright, it's their jeans so they can do what they like, but I think it looks ridiculous.

So is it just a fashion fad? Confused

National would bring back $5 prescription fees
Posted by: Lilith7 - 19-05-2023, 11:57 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (30)

If elected. Well of course they would. Dodgy

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...if-elected

National Party finance spokesperson Nicola Willis told┬áStuff┬áNational would return the $5 charge to prescriptions if elected, as it was a ÔÇ£nice to have should not be the priorityÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£IÔÇÖve got a lot of sympathy for the fact there are lower-income people for whom I donÔÇÖt want prescriptions to be a barrier. Well, actually, there are already targetted ways of ensuring they donÔÇÖt face prescription fees,ÔÇØ she said.
ÔÇ£And you have the Chemist Warehouse offering all prescriptions for free. So, in effect, the Government ends up subsidising that and also┬á┬á

subsidising a lot of higher-income people who are perfectly happy to pay that charge.ÔÇØ

National similarly did not support a move by the Government to make public transport for children under 13-years-old free, and to half the price for children and young adults between 13 and 24-years-old."

"IÔÇÖve got a lot of sympathy for the fact there are lower-income people"┬á Dodgy

Just no actual understanding - for example that not everyone will live close to &  be able to use a chemist warehouse which tend to be in the cities.

I'm not sure exactly why it is, but Nicola Willis reminds me strongly of Ruth Richardson.

National just doesn't seem to comprehend the difficulties for people, which I suppose is hardly surprising.

Shocked Why do they wear their mask under their chin?
Posted by: Roscoe - 18-05-2023, 07:45 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (16)

I don't see it quite so much these days being post pandemic but I still see it now and then. So why do they do it?

I was of the understanding that the mask was to keep the nasties from going up your nose or in your mouth, but wearing it under the chin is not going to stop anything. So why bother? What's the use? There's no point to that at all. It's just ridiculous.

  "Accidental miracle" restores sight.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 18-05-2023, 03:24 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

This could be very good news for glaucoma patients.

https://www.odt.co.nz/star-news/star-nat...rUz7PlV0fc

"Scientists are calling it "an accidental miracle" after research aimed at alleviating chronic pain was found to restore the sight of a Dunedin woman who has had an acute form of glaucoma for more than a decade.
Now University of Otago researchers are trying to replicate the result, in a bid to create new treatments for people with vision loss.
Prominent author Dr Lynley Hood (80) fractured her pelvis in a fall in 2020, and has had severe lower back pain ever since.
So she decided to participate in a University of Otago chronic pain treatment research project involving the placement of a cap on her head, wired with electrodes that use electrical currents to stimulate the brain.

There were two study groups ÔÇö the main group, who received the electrical stimulation into the brain, and the placebo group, who had the electrical current pass across their scalps.

Dr Hood was part of the placebo group, and over the four-week period, her eyesight steadily improved to nearly 100%, Dr Adhia said.

"Surprisingly, her vision improved so much that her ophthalmologist said it was a miracle.

"Miracle is not a word we use very often in science, but it was ÔÇö an accidental miracle.

"It wasnÔÇÖt the intended outcome, but to see that my research has actually made an impact with people is really miraculous."
