  The whale spy
Posted by: Lilith7 - 30-05-2023, 03:20 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

Of all things, a whale is suspected of being  a Russian spy! Rolleyes Big Grin

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/300...dens-coast

"A beluga whale that was┬áfirst spotted in Norway┬áwearing a Russian-made harness in 2019 has reappeared off SwedenÔÇÖs coast.
Norwegian marine experts have previously said the whale may have escaped from a Russian military facility, and that it could have been trained by the Russian navy as part of a programme to use underwater mammals for military or spying purposes.

The Norwegians nicknamed the whale Hvaldimir ÔÇô a combination of ÔÇ£hvalÔÇØ, the Norwegian word for ÔÇ£whaleÔÇØ, and the first name of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Sunday (local time), the whale was observed again in Hunnebostrand, off SwedenÔÇÖs south-western coast.

It had spent more than three years slowly moving down the Norwegian coastline before speeding up and moving on to Sweden.

ÔÇ£We donÔÇÖt know why he has sped up so fast right now,ÔÇØ especially since he is moving ÔÇ£very quickly away from his natural environmentÔÇØ, Sebastian Strand, a marine biologist with the OneWhale organisation, told AFP.
ÔÇ£It could be hormones driving him to find a mate. Or it could be loneliness as belugas are a very social species ÔÇô it could be that heÔÇÖs searching for other beluga whales.ÔÇØ

Fisherman Joar Hesten, who first encountered the whale in 2019, told local broadcaster NRK at the time that it displayed strange behaviour, such as rubbing up against boats and trying to pull the straps and ropes from them.
Hesten and the others on his boat then saw the whaleÔÇÖs harness strap, which was wrapped around its body. The harness had the words ÔÇ£Equipment St PetersburgÔÇØ written on it."

The Body Shop - A Warning!
Posted by: CliveM - 29-05-2023, 01:32 PM - Forum: PC World Chat - Replies (14)

My wife has been a user of The Body Shop's products for several years, she likes them and has previously always purchased them from Physical shops.
As she now has some mobility problems, she decided to open an online account with them and did so. Their website looks as good as could be expected and she placed an order for a couple of products a couple of weeks ago. As usual the order was paid for at the time it was placed. Since that time the following has happened:

1. Nothing has been received.
2. Emails to them have been ignored.
3. The record of this order, which initially appeared in her account as expected, has been removed. (I have a screenshot that page and copies of all associated emails)
4. I rang them to query what was going on and had what I would describe as an unsatisfactory conversation with a customer services lady who was quite evasive claimed they          had canceled the order as they could not supply the products and we would be refunded its value.
5. Nothing has been heard from them since that conversation.

One of my personal rules for online purchases from new suppliers is to never commit more money to the transaction than I can afford to lose, and it seems that is what has happened now.

I only post this here as a warning to any of our subscribers to be cautious should they wish to deal with these people.

  "NOT under your jurisdiction"
Posted by: Lilith7 - 28-05-2023, 03:44 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

They walk among us. Known as 'pseudolaw' this idiocy may be an offshoot of the CT nonsense around covid; people claiming that they're so very 'special' that the laws don't apply to them because they have 'diplomatic immunity.'  Rolleyes Big Grin

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/3...-up-courts

ÔÇ£Stop being a dick,ÔÇØ she growls. ÔÇ£Are you off your face or something?"
ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm not,ÔÇØ the man responds defensively. ÔÇ£I have all the adequate paperwork here... IÔÇÖm no longer a person under the corporation you guys are under.ÔÇØ
Cody, from Masterton, has been pulled over.

ItÔÇÖs not the first time. His car is splashed with a decal suggesting he is a ÔÇÿM─üori rangerÔÇÖ and displays a sticker claiming he travels under diplomatic immunity. He does not carry a driving licence.
Sometimes, Cody records his interactions with police and shares the videos online, where they are dissected for an eager audience.
Similar videos have become a hallmark of overseas Sovereign Citizen (SovCit) movements. They typically feature someone sealed in their car, speaking through a small gap in the window, reading from a prepared script.
But much like a global TV show adapted for different audiences, the local version has a distinctly Kiwi twist.

Cody describes himself as a┬áÔÇ£kaitiaki diplomatÔÇØ: A group that believes they are under the jurisdiction of Te Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa, meaning they have diplomatic immunity and donÔÇÖt have to comply with New Zealand law.

ItÔÇÖs one of several arguments he deploys in the space of five minutes. Each has supporting documents, which he thrusts through the window.

Cody is nervous. His knee shakes; the officer has told him he risks being arrested if he refuses to provide his details.

But he persists. The police are a corporation, and he doesnÔÇÖt want to enter a contract; you can't commit a crime if there's no identifiable victim. One officer politely reads the documents while the other takes a more direct approach.

ÔÇ£Cody, stop being a dickhead and give your licence,ÔÇØ she says.

ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm under common law,ÔÇØ he responds. ÔÇ£I. Am. Under. Common. Law.ÔÇØ

After a pointless back and forth, he begrudgingly gives his name and address. It was all he needed to do, the officer tells him. ÔÇ£Yeah, well, IÔÇÖm not under your guysÔÇÖ jurisdiction any more,ÔÇØ he says, begrudgingly.
ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm not a corporate entity. IÔÇÖm a living man.ÔÇØ

Thumbs Down Woke NZTA introducing bilingual road signs
Posted by: C_T_Russell - 28-05-2023, 01:23 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (30)

I know some here disagree with me using the term "woke" but how about doing something meaningful with the money instead like actually fixing the roads?
What's more for a language that only a minority actually speak on a daily basis and only a few understand, why on earth have it as the first language on the signs to begin with?
I guess I could understand if they put it as the second language on the road signs.
Mind you, TVNZ do the same with the weather, seems the English name comes second, despite it being the language most of us all speak.
I agree with National on this one and I know NZ first is on board with this too along with Act.

  WhatsApp from MS Store?

Are we now forced to use WhatsApp from MS Store?

My current WhatsApp for Windows Version 2.2319.9 pops up a message says:

"This app expires in 30 days. Download the new, faster app to get group calling and more!. Get new app> "

Went to WhatsApp site and it seems that there's only available from MS Store.    Microsoft has acquired WhatsApp?

Thumbs Down Evil predators in the garden

Has anybody else noticed snails attacking Monarchs in their pupa stage?
I had the outside light on, and as I passed yesterday evening I noticed quantities of snails in a Swan Plant. Looking closer, almost every snail was enveloping a Monarch pupa.  Alas, I did not take any pictures, too busy squashing snails and spreading any snail survivors' last suppers. They killed quite a few pupae (?) pupas (?) several of which had fallen to the ground.
At least the early birds had takeaways ready for their breakfasts.

Just tried to download Windows 10 from the media centre. Download was good. However, when I tried to burn the ISO file to a standard 4.7 DVD, I got a message that the ISO was 108mb too big. Resorted to downloading the ISO to a USB.

National would use sanctions against those with disabilities who can't find work
Posted by: Lilith7 - 26-05-2023, 07:10 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (7)

This really is despicable; they're so out of touch & because of that, intend  to make their situation far more difficult for some of those who are worst off.

Either that - or they know very well & simply don't care.
Dodgy

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/...olicy.html

"The National Party's leader Christopher Luxon has confirmed Jobseeker beneficiaries with a disability or a health problem could face sanctions under National's plan to get young people off welfare.

It's drawn criticism from one of New Zealand's disabled chief executives.

Workbridge CEO Jonathan Mosen understands the barriers disabled people face in finding work.
"There are so many misconceptions out there about what disabled people are capable of that it can be really difficult to break through those misperceptions so that disabled people can find work in the first place," Mosen said.
But under a National Government young disabled beneficiaries could face benefit cuts.
"Yes, if they refuse to participate in their job plan, we will employ the sanctions," Luxon said.
"It's not that we have a lot of disabled people sitting around twiddling their thumbs. They're desperate to work," Mosen said.
National's policy would apply to under 25-year-olds who've been receiving the Jobseeker benefit for over a year.

They'd be given a job coach to help them find work and those who fail to follow their coach's plan would face sanctions including benefit reductions. While those that do find employment for at least 12 months would get a $1000 bonus.
"Thirteen-thousand young people have been on a benefit - on the Jobseeker benefit - for over a year," Luxon said.
But those 13,000 Jobseeker beneficiaries Luxon speaks of include people with a health condition or a disability.
Official data shows only about 8700 18 to 24-year-olds on the Jobseeker benefit for over a year are actually considered "work ready".

Paralysed man walking again with AI help
Posted by: Lilith7 - 25-05-2023, 07:19 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (11)

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023...%20muscles.

"A man who was paralysed in a cycling accident in 2011 has been able to stand and walk with an aid after doctors implanted a device that reads his brain waves and sends instructions to his spine to move the right muscles.
Gert-Jan Oskam, 40, was told he would never walk again after breaking his neck in a traffic accident in China, but has climbed stairs and walked for more than 100 metres at a time since having the operation.

The ÔÇ£digital bridgeÔÇØ is the latest from a team of neuroscientists in┬áSwitzerland┬áwho have a longstanding programme to develop brain-machine interfaces to overcome paralysis. The project aims to use wireless signals to reconnect the brain with muscles that are rendered useless when spinal cord nerves are broken."

  Mama Hooch predator brothers jailed
Posted by: Lilith7 - 25-05-2023, 07:01 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (3)

Well done CHCH police & all the young women who had the courage to speak out against these evil boys.

Dodgy Angry

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/1...back-years

"The Mama Hooch rapist brothers had warped views of women long before they hunted for victims at their family-run bar.

ThatÔÇÖs according to a former partner of one of the Jaz brothers, who says she witnessed ÔÇ£extremely toxicÔÇØ and misogynistic behaviour as early as 2009, leading her to end their relationship and walk out on her waitressing job.

ÔÇ£These arenÔÇÖt monsters who are born evil, this behaviour grew because they were enabled.ÔÇØ

Danny Jaz, 40, a father of two, and his younger brother Roberto, 38, between them drugged and sexually assaulted numerous patrons of ChristchurchÔÇÖs Mama Hooch bar over three years.

The pair have enjoyed name suppression since police first laid charges in 2018 ÔÇô but that finally ended on Thursday. They were convicted of dozens of crimes, including rape, sexual violation, indecent assault and spiking drinks after a two-month Christchurch District Court trial.
From 2015 to 2018, Danny Jaz, Mama HoochÔÇÖs bar manager, attacked 15 women, many of whom he followed into the barÔÇÖs toilets late at night and forced himself upon them. "
