Flying taxis, Brazil
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-07-2023, 03:31 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

This should be interesting; they say they'll have them ready by 2026.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-66264229

"The Brazilian plane maker Embraer says a new factory will be built near Sao Paolo to produce electric flying taxis which it hopes will take to the skies from 2026.
The aircraft, to be made by its subsidiary Eve, will resemble a small helicopter with enough space for up to six customers.
It hopes to assemble a prototype this year. US regulators recently released a timeline for air taxis to be flying there as early as 2025.
The electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft will not need a runway but can travel long distances like an aeroplane. Electric motors should reduce noise and pollution compared with standard planes.

It has been argued the aircraft could help reduce traffic congestion in crowded cities, without being too expensive for customers. They have also been seen as an alternative for transporting cargo.

The drone-like passenger vehicles will initially be used in taxi fleets, AFP news agency reported.
The first flights will have a pilot but a later rollout of self-piloted vehicles is also in the company's plans.
The vehicles will be 100% electric, allowing for emission-free flights."

3. Your recommendations for any other brand/ model  are welcome.

You views appreciated.

Kiwi tourist witnessed US soldier 'sprint' to North Korea.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 20-07-2023, 02:41 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

How bizarre. He was due to head back to Texas after serving two months in a south Korean prison & may have faced further punishment & discharge from the army.

Out of the frying pan into the fire, perhaps... Rolleyes

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/300931243/...-was-stunt

"Sarah Leslie thought she was witnessing a stunt when she saw an American soldier start sprinting towards North Korea.
Leslie and her father, tourists from New Zealand, were part of a group that left Tuesday morning from Seoul to visit the Demilitarised Zone that divides South and North Korea.
Private 2nd Class Travis King was among the group of 43 tourists, Leslie told The Associated Press, although he was casually dressed in jeans and a T-shirt and she had no idea at the time that he was a soldier, or in legal trouble.

The tour was nearing its end Tuesday afternoon ÔÇô the group had just walked out of the building and were milling about taking photos ÔÇô when she saw King running ÔÇ£really fast.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£I assumed initially he had a mate filming him in some kind of really stupid prank or stunt, like a TikTok, the most stupid thing you could do,ÔÇØ Leslie said. ÔÇ£But then I heard one of the soldiers shout, ÔÇÿGet that guy.ÔÇÖ"
Leslie said the command was shouted by an American soldier, one of a group that patrols the area along with South Korean troops.
But the soldiers didn't have time to respond. She said that after running about 10 meters (30 feet) down a narrow passageway between the distinctive blue buildings, King was over the border and then disappeared from sight. It was all over in a few seconds.
She said she found it hard to understand why King would head to North Korea.
ÔÇ£I just didnÔÇÖt think anyone would ever want to do that,ÔÇØ she said."

  The lie of home detention
Posted by: Wainuiguy - 20-07-2023, 12:17 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (66)

When first introduced in 2007 home detention monitoring via GPS bracelet was sold to the NZ public as being used for non-violent offenders.

However since then it has been given to those who have committed more violent crime placing the NZ public in greater harm.  Today's tragic events in Auckland this morning being the perfect example

It was running OK untill I changed to this Viewsonic XG270Q monitor.

I get this error message:  IDirect3D Device7 cannot be made.

Windows 11 pro with latest updates.

What could be the reason?

  Roger Douglas - unbelievable
Posted by: Lilith7 - 19-07-2023, 04:27 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (10)

I'm guessing he doesn't do irony.  Dodgy
He's complaining about the way in which 'National & Labour have robbed lower income earners"

That is precisely what the greed based Neo Liberalism - which HE helped impose on this country - has been doing since it began.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/live-updates/18...t-the-plot

"Douglas wrote: Not satisfied with the way National and Labour have robbed lower income earners of $60 per week over the last 13 years via bracket creep, Act wants to go further. They want to keep bracket creep in place and then use the extra billion dollars-plus of taxes per year  to lower the highest income earners in New Zealand personal income taxes. Really, this is not the Act party I formed in 1993.

Seymour, whose party is today┬ápolling over 12%, told the Spinoff in response: ÔÇ£Sir Roger is possibly frustrated that Act is not as radical as he wants it to be. Our tax policy today is much less radical than the 23% flat tax that he fell out with David Lange and lost his job over. We still respect Sir Roger for his service to New Zealand, and hope he is enjoying his retirement.ÔÇØ

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/e...A6QIENOZI/

"Act Party co-founder Sir Roger Douglas says his former party has ÔÇ£lost the plotÔÇØ and he will not be voting for it in the coming election because he believes Act only represents the wealthy."

It always has Roger - & even you must be aware of that. Dodgy Dodgy

Douglas, a former Labour Finance Minister who founded Act with Derek Quigley in 1993, used a 22-page open letter to hit out at those currently leading the party and state that he will be a ÔÇ£swing voterÔÇØ for the first time after voting for Act since 2002.
ThatÔÇÖs despite his nephew Rob standing for Act in the Tukituki electorate.

He claimed Labour and the Greens promoted policies that made people dependent on the government in order to get their vote, while National ÔÇ£stand for very littleÔÇØ and didnÔÇÖt introduce ÔÇ£new and exciting policyÔÇØ, Douglas believed.

But he reserved a stinging criticism for his former party, claiming recent Act articles and policies reinforced a view among New Zealanders that it ÔÇ£represents only the wealthyÔÇØ, citing his displeasure with ActÔÇÖs opposition to ending ÔÇ£bracket creepÔÇØ, which increases tax paid by average wage and salary earners because doing so would require higher taxes on wealthier people."

Ah - so NOT really a sudden attack of conscience after all then, eh. Just concerned lest someone (in the form of govt) takes some of your wealth.  Rolleyes Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Best just keep voting ACT then eh...

  Countdown rebranding
Posted by: SueDonim - 19-07-2023, 10:13 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

One of several articles about Countdown spending $400m+ rebranding. Oh, it's also refurbishment. Yeah right!

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/countdown-...HV4VRJ33Y/

I've already sent them my feedback - not that I expect anyone to actually read it - telling them that the best marketing they could do would be to provide a quality product at a good price and then they will get loyalty from customers, without so-called loyalty cards. Like PnS. Spending their profits on this kind of marketing in today's economic climate is obscene.

Another of the articles suggested just taking the first "o" out their name. That's a better idea.
