The elections tell me one thing and that's....

That kiwis are stupid, or else they wouldn't keep re-rlecting the same clowns back into power from either labour or national.
It's just a flip-flop circus.
I have some hope though, with smaller parties gaining more support such as ACT.
Would be nice if NZ First return, they are the only party that would make meaningful change if they got enough votes.

Pine trees should have never been allowed

Now we have maori heading over to the UN to complain.
I could have told them from the start that it was a bad idea.
It's not even sustainable long term because the intention is to force people to stop burning fossil fuels, then where does the money come from if everything switches to renewables? Who keeps paying the carbon farmers?
Solution is to only allow permanent native forest and give the ssme credits. Sure it takes longer to establish but long term it holds more carbon anyway.

  Labour is DONE
Posted by: C_T_Russell - 24-07-2023, 10:43 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (28)

Kinda feel sorry for Kiri Allan, she was one of the better MPs that Labour has.
But ultimately the party failed here miserably knowing the issues she was going through.
I hope she gets the support she needs.

  Security Intelligence Updates Display
Posted by: Neil F - 23-07-2023, 10:03 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (3)

I am Win 11 Pro 64 Bit fully updated (except for Previews).
I have a guilty feeling that I asked and received an answer on this before but can't find details.  I have set Updates as "Let me decide" rather than automatic as much because I want to know what is happening. Each morning now I am told when I check for updates that I am up to date.
Until recently I was prompted most days for Security Intelligence Updates but such no longer appears. I do not know why no prompts these days. My original query was where can I view the Updates History for Security intelligence Updates? I have tried to recall what I was told previously without success. Updates History only displays the "biggies." such as 22H2 Cum Updates, NET Framework etc.
Guidance please

  Blatant Nimbyism
Posted by: Lilith7 - 23-07-2023, 12:12 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (10)

And from people who don't even live locally.   Dodgy
Tairua, a Coromandel town wants to open a skate park & has been trying to do so for 30 years is being constantly prevented from doing so by bach owners, who are only in the town for holidays.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3009301...skate-park

ÔÇ£These [people] ... also have property in Auckland, Queenstown and other places too, some of them donÔÇÖt even spend six nights a year in Tairua, and yet they're preventing our families from having a facility. We need things for our kids to do, we need activities. Tairua isnÔÇÖt a retirement village any more.ÔÇØ Claims there will be rowdy behaviour donÔÇÖt wash with Gage-Brown. She points to a video circulating on social media showing people she says are associated with the Tairua Rugby and Sports Club, which is based at Cory Park, drinking and streaking across the field last Saturday nigh

ÔÇ£The skate park wonÔÇÖt have lights on it, our children will not be running around naked and they definitely wonÔÇÖt be drinking alcohol. They wonÔÇÖt be creating the kind of noise that the community is having to put up with right now.ÔÇØ

(Derek Rope, club captain of the rugby and sports club, which opposes the skate park on health and safety grounds and because it will annex part of the rugby field, says thereÔÇÖs no proof it was club members doing the streaking.

Both sides accuse each other of dirty tactics.

Stuff revealed in June how an Auckland rugby club encouraged members to stack a community survey with opposition to the park to help out a benefactor with a holiday home in Tairua who opposes the facility.

ÔÇ£There are potentially some additional sponsorship dollars in it for the club,ÔÇØ said an email to all members."

https://www.waikatotimes.co.nz/a/nz-news...ith-locals

"The community and waterfront property owners have been pitted against each other over a skatepark the council is about to start building in TairuaÔÇÖs Cory Park Domain, near the estuary.

The battle is now heading to the High Court in Hamilton for a judicial review sought by the property owners.
ÔÇ£It's pure nimbyism from a rich minority. Wealthy holiday homeowners ÔÇô many who don't live here ÔÇô who think thereÔÇÖs going to be pee on their back fences or bottle on their lawns. The reality is itÔÇÖs a much needed and wanted facility.ÔÇØ

ÔÇ£TheyÔÇÖve doubled the cost for the community.ÔÇØ

The sports and recreation trust was asked to contribute a third of the original planÔÇÖs cost: $450,000, towards which locals donated $150,000.

ÔÇ£Now itÔÇÖs going to cost $1.1m because of everything thatÔÇÖs had to be spent because of the opposition of this small group.ÔÇØ

  Developers take over, Heritage crushed
Posted by: Lilith7 - 22-07-2023, 03:35 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (22)

It started happening here after the quakes & now it seems everywhere across the country, developers are keen to bowl older houses so they can cram as many tiny dwellings as possible onto the same area.
There's no doubt that we do definitely need more housing thanks to successive idiotic govts who couldn't or wouldn't take a long term view, but it also seems that greed speaks loudly.

https://www.thepress.co.nz/a/nz-news/350...uff_skybox

"It was a snapshot of the cityÔÇÖs past.

A son walked out the front door to go to war and never returned and his grieving father, who would go on to become a prominent city councillor, used the family home to help those with influenza during the 1918 pandemic.
But the large villa at 132 Tancred St in Linwood has recently been unceremoniously flattened in just two days by hulking steel machines not even conceived when it was built around 1910.

ItÔÇÖs the confronting sight residents of a 500m stretch of the street on the north side of Linwood Ave are getting used to, with three large apartment developments and social housing flats taking shape in under 12 months.
Now some residents fear what 60 to 100 more residents could do to the quiet neighbourhood they prized, including Rachael Delahunty, who lives in a renovated villa of a similar age.
Im really sad about some of these houses being pulled down, she says. It seems to me that [heritage] areas are protected in wealthy parts of town like Fendalton and Merivale but here they are demolished for no reason  they dont even try to relocate them. They just crush them.

And the worry for Delahunty is just how many more villas will be taken down and replaced with large apartment complexes. She, like all residents of the street, have been flooded with offers to sell to developers over the past year. They have seemingly been attracted to the street for the same reasons as the current residents - its quietness and safety.

Once white-collar area of the city, the character villas on Tancred St mark a prosperous time on the back of booming farm returns.
Built after the depression of the 1890s and World War I, the homes were constructed with quality materials, according to historian Geoff Rice, and were occupied largely by clerks and office workers.
Rice doesnÔÇÖt mince his words about the loss of these houses.
ÔÇ£The hasty demolition by greedy developers is absolutely deplorable,ÔÇØ he says. ÔÇ£It shows no respect for the cityÔÇÖs history and no respect for the sense of community.ÔÇØ

Acer Chromebook 317 CB317-1H-P5PT 17.3" , like all Chromebooks has very poor mouse wheel scrolling. I have tried all the relevant extensions, and set the "smooth scrolling" flag to enabled. It varies from site to site, quite unpredictable. Has anyone solved this problem, or any ideas? The Trackpad is very good. Huh

Merrill Fernando founder of Dilmah, dead.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-07-2023, 03:49 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

Aged 93. We could do with more like him.

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/202...ed-93.html

In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, Dilmah Tea announced the death of Merrill J Fernando at the age of 93.
Fernando was surrounded by his sons and grandchildren when he died.
The 93-year-old founded Dilmah in 1988 and he became well-known for his "do try it" slogan.
Dilmah is now one of the world's largest tea brands and is also well-known in New Zealand.
"The visionary founder of Dilmah Ceylon Tea Company's greatness was in his invincible faith, his integrity and love for tea and family. With devotion and urgency he pursued his desire for integrity and quality with humility and kindness," said Dilmah Tea's Facebook post.

"His achievement in disrupting an exploitative colonial industry irrevocably changed the lives of producers around the world introducing a paradigm shift in ethical business before ethics and sustainable business acquired the prominence they have now."

Fernando devoted his entire life to tea, working every day until he was 91 years old."
