What's the oldest thing you have, that you still use?
Posted by: crafters_corner - 05-12-2021, 12:34 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (24)

It's the oddest thing for me. A plastic comb. It was my Dads, and he had it for goodness only knows how long. I always remember it. I use it every day. It's a bit of a treasure.

Surface book 3 boots into UEFI BIOS
Posted by: nzoomed - 05-12-2021, 11:42 AM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (4)

Ever seen one boot into the BIOS and not boot into windows?
SSD appears OK, but won't boot up.
Reinstalled windows and just boots back into BIOS again.

Really weird. A quick Google search suggests it's hardware related.

  Protests again today.
Posted by: Oldfellah - 04-12-2021, 12:08 PM - Forum: Covid-19 - Replies (15)

The protesters, who earlier today gathered at Auckland Domain, have reached Newmarket's biggest mall 277 - chanting "Jacinda must go".
This is the first time people have congregated to object to the vaccine mandate since Aucklanders got their freedom yesterday.
A teacher spoke over the PA about how the situation "really hit home" this week with unvaccinated people being unable to buy a coffee in a cafe and purchase other items.

I dont care if people are unvaccinated its their choice but in the same instance as long as they dont affect me or mine thats ok.
As for the teacher speaking about not being able to get a coffee or other items, well the choice is clear isnt it?  Huh Huh

  Latest school shooting; parents charged
Posted by: Lilith7 - 04-12-2021, 10:24 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

This has barely made a ripple here, perhaps because US school shootings happen so often now. But the parents of this boy are to be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
He seems to be quite disturbed but his parents weren't in any rush to get him counselling or help of some sort.

Huh Huh

During Friday's news conference, the top prosecutor in Oakland County said that a teacher had observed Ethan Crumbley searching ammunition on his cellphone and alerted school officials. The school tried to contact his mother but could not reach her.

McDonald told reporters that Jennifer Crumbley did not contact the school but instead texted her son: "Lol. IÔÇÖm not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught."
On Tuesday, prior to the shooting, another teacher alerted school officials to a drawing found on Ethan Crumbley's desk. It contained a drawing of a gun pointing at the words ÔÇ£the thoughts wonÔÇÖt stop, help me," the prosecutor said.

There was also a drawing of a bullet with the words ÔÇ£blood everywhereÔÇØ above it and a drawing of a person who appeared to have been shot twice and was bleeding. McDonald said the drawing of the person included a laughing emoji and the phrases ÔÇ£my life is uselessÔÇØ and ÔÇ£the world is dead."

I really hate it when an author

...winds up a story with an ending that doesn't really fit. One that seems to  suggest they simply boxed themself into a corner they could see no way out of. It happens a lot with works of high imagination, the series of what ifs just spiral in upon themselves until they are lost in the darkness.

But perhaps that is better than the formulaic creation of a book where every part of it is so carefully mapped out we readers can spy the inevitable conclusion long before it takes place. The kind of story where we start yelling advice and warnings at the characters in a vain attempt to save them from the wicked machinations of the puppetmaster behind the pen.

That said, I did enjoy Alistair Reynold's return to Revelation Space, I am just a little frustrated it didn't resolve in the end. But then Revelation Space never did...

  National Party
Posted by: Oldfellah - 03-12-2021, 05:38 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (13)

National Party leader Christopher Luxon says he's not going to apologise for his success.
The National Party had been run "in a very dysfunctional way for the last four years," and now was the time for strong leadership - a quality Luxon said he had vast experience with.

He had built teams and culture and "got results and achieved things" through his corporate career and he was ready to apply these lessons to his new role, Luxon said.

He is forgetting one thing, caucus is not anything like a corporate  company when the boss says jump you ask how high, caucus is full of knife wielding backstabbers out for themselves, so we will see how his corporate  strategies go. It should be interesting.

This would be terrific, if this mystery could be solved. For the families, to never quite know what happened, would be just awful.

I have to say, that a mystery like this one, is very intriguing, as it is open to all sorts of scenarios. The "Where, What, How, When and Why" is what all concerned need to know.
