  Doctor John Campbell
Posted by: king1 - 24-03-2022, 10:19 AM - Forum: Covid-19 - Replies (30)

Curious to know peoples take on the good doctor nowadays...

I know he is/was influential and helped a lot of people make a lot of sense of the numbers in the early days of the pandemic, but from what I am reading some folks seem to think he has gone off the rails a bit...

for example
https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus...t-happened
https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/...source_of/
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMajorityRepo..._campbell/

a bit of a fact checking fail by the looks of it
https://www.factcheck.org/2022/03/sciche...-covid-19/

and this monstrosity of a discussion about a video he produced, number of british deaths from covid, and being called out by the BBC...
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthr...?t=7163826

which pertains to this article.

yet you can not argue he is popular with millions of followers

we had a bit of a discussion about him HERE

Has he changed?   he seems to have created quite a polarising following, you either love him or hate him...

I'm of two minds, on the one hand he is assimilating copious amounts of data from multiple sources - no-one can really be blamed for the odd misinterpretation of data and results...  but on the other though, he is portraying himself as a knowledgeable professional in the field, with a wide following, so there should be a certain level of accountability for the information one provides as fact...

Interesting piece by Gordon Campbell, especially the second footnote.

Unpopular Opinion: There should be no voting age
Posted by: reigns - 23-03-2022, 02:50 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (20)

I'll keep my opening post short and sweet, I'll no doubt get unnecessarily wordy later. In a nutshell:

Big philosophical reason: A true democracy allows everyone the opportunity to voice their opinion. Women deserve the right and opportunity to speak for themselves. Maori and other indigenous groups deserve the right and opportunity to speak for themselves. Even prisoners should have their right to vote reinstated. Children are the last group of citizens/residents denied the right and opportunity to vote in our democracy.

(Ir)rational argument: Almost all of the arguments we use to deny voting rights to children also apply to adults who do vote. I can genuinely struggle to name one. Bring me your excuses.

  Ive got covid...
Posted by: C_T_Russell - 22-03-2022, 12:32 PM - Forum: Covid-19 - Replies (39)

Getting over the worst of it now, was really like a bad head cold.
I see what they mean about the brain fog. Luckily it hasnt lasted long, was bad for about 3 days.
Now im just left with a little cough but im still testing as infectious.
Its a bit of a joke with the self isolation rules, they say only a week and then you can go out, but I dont want to infect the public so im going to leave it until i test negative, but my doctor said dont bother testing yourself anymore.
You can still be infectious without symptoms, and having symptoms doesnt mean you are infectious either because you can have a cough linger on for weeks as an example, so not sure why my doctor said its ok after a week when im clearly still infectious.

Just glad that ive got it out of the way now, will probably end up going back to work by the end of this week if im all clear.

New law to have protest free 'safe zones'
Posted by: Lilith7 - 20-03-2022, 02:13 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (7)

About time; those who are already having to cope with a what  is very stressful time shouldn't be harassed while doing so.

https://www.1news.co.nz/2022/03/16/new-l...n-clinics/

ÔÇ£Safe zonesÔÇØ can now be established around specific abortion facilities, restricting protest behaviour in those areas, after a proposed law passed its third reading in Parliament on Wednesday evening.

The bill passed with 108 votes in favour and 12 against. For Labour, 62 voted in favour and three (Anahila KanongataÔÇÖa-Suisuiki, Neru Leavasa, Jamie Strange) against.
For National, 24 were in favour and nine (Simeon Brown, Harete Hipango, Melissa Lee, Simon OÔÇÖConnor, Chris Penk, Maureen Pugh, Penny Simmonds, Louise Upston, Michael Woodhouse) were opposed.
All MPs in the Green Party, ACT and Te P─üti M─üori voted for the bill. Conscience voting meant MPs didnÔÇÖt have to vote along party lines.

The┬ámemberÔÇÖs bill┬áby LabourÔÇÖs Louisa Wall allowed for the creation of safe areas of up to 150 metres around certain abortion facilities on a case-by-case basis if they requested it.

Once in force, the bill will prohibit the obstruction of people - including advising them to refrain from - seeking or providing abortion services within the safe zone. In that safe area, people will also be banned from filming those groups if it was likely to cause emotional distress, as well as protesting abortion."

Boris compares Ukraine invasion to Brexit
Posted by: Lilith7 - 20-03-2022, 01:14 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (2)

Once again Boris opens his mouth & inserts his foot. Unbelievably stupid comment. Dodgy

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-60809454

"But his remarks, intended to rally the Tory faithful, attracted criticism from political figures in the UK and Europe.
Donald Tusk, ex-president of the European Council, said Mr Johnson's comments would "offend Ukrainians, the British and common sense".
Guy Verhofstadt, the former prime minister of Belgium who was the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, said the comparison was "insane".

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called the prime minister a "national embarrassment", adding: "To compare a referendum to women and children fleeing Putin's bombs is an insult to every Ukrainian.

"He is no Churchill: he is Basil Fawlty."
