Oldest DNA reveals 2 million year old 'lost world.'
Posted by: Lilith7 - 08-12-2022, 02:29 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (13)

Fascinating stuff; apparently Greenland was once a very different place.

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-63867164

"Today the area in North Greenland is a polar desert, but the genetic material, extracted from soil, has uncovered a rich array of plants and animals.
The scientists found genetic traces of elephant-like mastodons, reindeer and geese that roamed among birch and poplar trees, and of marine life including horseshoe crabs and algae.

The most ancient DNA ever sequenced reveals what the Arctic looked like two million years ago when it was warmer.

In Greenland, the team used ancient soil samples to look back in time at the biology of the Early Pleistocene Epoch.
They found a forest ecosystem, with Arctic shrubs, herbs, ferns and mosses growing among the trees.

Among the discovery of DNA from creatures like rodents, reindeer and geese, the unearthing of mastodon DNA was a surprise - Prof Willerslev told the BBC no one had found the elephant-like creatures in Greenland before."

  Mitsubishi I-car
Posted by: rpvr - 07-12-2022, 01:30 PM - Forum: Motoring - Replies (4)

Does anyone have an opinion to share on the Mitsubishi I-car as a city runabout? My partner and I have had an old Toyota Starlet as a spare car/runabout for years, but I have just sold this as I got tired of getting a WOF every 6 months for a car that did minimal mileage. I'm intrigued by the little 65occ I-car and think it would serve the purpose well, but I note it is turbocharged. Is this likely to affect reliability? I  sort of think that if I bought one and looked after it, it may become a bit of a collector's item in a few years. Views both pro and con are sought.

Latest polls more bad news for Labour
Posted by: Wainuiguy - 07-12-2022, 08:54 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

The latest 1 News Kantar poll paints a grim picture for Labour moving into the Christmas Season - this before the debacle that was the 3 waters entrenchment clause.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/l...ECMCZPNCQ/

Now hard on the heels of that poll the latest from Roy Morgan points an even worse one with support for Labout plummeting to Andrew Liitle levels.  More worrying for Labout was RM was the most accurate poll for 2020 election.

2023 shaping up to be an interesting year.

  The climate emergency is over!
Posted by: C_T_Russell - 05-12-2022, 12:09 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (10)

The UN has just revised the models for climate change this century and the 5 degrees predicted rise has now been halved!
https://www.facebook.com/theplatformnz/p...hCF4KwTN7l
This should be huge news, but the media haven't reported anything about this.
Its only projected to be 2.5 degrees now, so we can all sit back and relax.
I doubt we will even see a 2.5 degree change anyway.

The home of Iranian rock climber demolished
Posted by: Lilith7 - 04-12-2022, 02:46 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - No Replies

There are reports that the family home of Elnaz Rekabi, the Iranian woman rock climber who didn't wear a hijab while competing has been demolished. According to Iranian officials, it has nothing to do with her protest & 'happened some time ago.'
What a bunch of complete bastards they are. Dodgy Angry

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-63847173

Opposition to the headscarf has fuelled protests that have swept Iran, with the climber being hailed as a hero.
A video showing the ruins of a house with sports medals on the ground started circulating this week.
Davood - Elnaz Rekabi's brother and also a top athlete - is seen crying in the video.

Anti-government activists denounced it as an act of revenge against Ms Rekabi - although it is not clear when the footage was shot.
Now, the semi-official Tasnim news agency has confirmed that the house has been demolished, but says this was due to the family not having a valid permit for its construction.
It said all this took place before Ms Rekabi competed without a headscarf in October."

And people still cant see how this country is becoming more and more communist, we are heading down the direction of China if we are not careful and sadly people dont see it, or just in denial.
