National on 'education' for Neuro diverse kids
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-04-2023, 06:56 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (6)

Unbelievably & utterly wrong. Dodgy Angry

"More prescriptive curriculum helps Neuro diverse kids" National

https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=781...5438591826

"Emily writes

┬á I'm in a post-op tramadol haze but IÔÇÖm going there anywayÔǪ

If you speak to any parent of an autistic child they will probably tell you this policy will probably lead to their child ending mainstream schooling at best or at worst becoming suicidal.

My beautiful boy is the smartest kid I know and his teachers know that too. But any test will not show that. A test will say he cannot read while he devours 10,000 page PDFs on shipping channels. A test will tell you he canÔÇÖt write as he emails me beautiful long stories that are amazing insights into his incredible brain or just bloody hilarious and basically ready for publication - he writes better than many of the submissions I had when I was working as an editor. A test will say he is years behind in math as he calculates someoneÔÇÖs height by looking at them or looks at a gravestone and says within seconds ÔÇ£that couple died at 67 and 72, 15 years apart.ÔÇØ A test will say he is ÔÇ£behindÔÇØ at every stage as he schools everyone around him.

Our tamariki are sacred. TheyÔÇÖre taonga. They are not fucking economic units to be measured on how neurotypical they can pretend to be.

STOP USING OUR KIDS AS POLITICAL FOOTBALLS. Stop fucking around with their education to try to win votes from ignorant assholes. JUST STOP."

Our kids need well paid and well resourced teachers who arenÔÇÖt burnt the fuck out from working in this broken system. They need teacher aides, funding, support, resources. The last thing they need is testing, exclusion, streaming and being forced out of mainstream schools.

If you vote National you are voting to end the chance at a mainstream school life for so many neurodivergent children. My son has the best bloody friends you could ever ask for - testing which will destroy his confidence and exclude him will take away the only social network he has. Not to mention the impact on parents having to give up their careers, dreams, hopes because they have to educate their kids from home without any funding or resources. (Also, it will literally send more families into poverty if they canÔÇÖt work, or youÔÇÖll have ND kids at home alone while their parents work).

National MPs - I know for a FACT a lot of you have kids with disabilities. How you could pull up the ladder and do this knowing what it would have done to YOUR kids is fucking revolting and I donÔÇÖt know how you sleep at night.

WE WANT EVIDENCE BASED POLICY. Not this bullshit.

(Also thereÔÇÖs no ÔÇ£themÔÇØ. ItÔÇÖs neuroDIVERSE for a reason, the clue is in the name. You should not be making policy on this when you donÔÇÖt even know what a fucking spectrum is. Please, for the love of GOD just Google this shit at the very least before you put out policy. Like just read the Wikipedia page and youÔÇÖd be more clued up than you currently are).┬á

Kabul embassy's Ghurkha guards may be deported
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-04-2023, 03:55 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (2)

Rather a bizarre way to treat these men.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65182440

"A group of Nepalese security guards who were rescued from the fall of Kabul in 2021 are facing removal from the UK, 19 months later.
The 13 Nepalese military veterans - known as Gurkhas - were employed guarding the UK embassy in Kabul.
Their lawyers say their legal right to remain in the UK since their rescue has been "voided" by the Home Office.
A Home Office spokesman denied anyone with a permanent right to live in the UK had had it removed.
The men, who are Nepalese and Indian nationals aged between 37 and 60, were working for a private security firm that guarded the compound housing the UK and Canadian embassies in Kabul.

A lawyer for some of the security guards said 10 of them were detained in handcuffs in an early morning raid on their west London hotel last week.
They had been living in the hotel and working in its kitchen, serving food to other Afghan evacuees.
They've since been held in immigration removal centres close to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
Removal directions for the group are scheduled to begin on Thursday 6 April.
Bam Gurung, 37, who worked for 10 years as an embassy security guard, told the BBC he had hoped to start a new life in the UK and serve in the Army.

The BBC has been shown biometric residence permits for two of the men stating that they have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
This immigration status allows holders a life-long right to live, work and claim benefits.
Jamie Bell, of Duncan Lewis Solicitors, said: "All were evacuated on the same flight and all of their claims were processed together. It is entirely unclear as to why there has been a difference in treatment between them.
"We have received no clarity from the Home Office as to why having evacuated these brave men, they are now being treated in an inhumane and cruel way."

Mr Bell said the immigration status of five of the men appeared to have been settled until the surprise raid."

"Is it time for a zero-alcohol limit for drivers?"
Posted by: SueDonim - 05-04-2023, 10:44 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

I saw this article this morning https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/john-macdo...GQVYO4RPU/.

A "zero" limit is impractical because of the presence of alcohol in unexpected places - eg medications like cough mixture.

On the other hand the author is thinking in the right direction. If only everyone would follow his example to simply choose not to drink when they intend to drive home. Our society has such a dependence on alcohol that it's really out of hand. Enforcement is only necessary because, like in so many situations, people simply won't do the right thing for the right reason.

It is several years now since the studies showing that there is no safe limit of alcohol intake first came out, but everyone still drinks. They could stop for purely health reasons. Then they would have more money to spend on things that they might enjoy more anyway, and without the alcohol in their lives would potentially have a longer and healthier life expectancy to continue that enjoyment.

Yet we still get articles like this one https://abc7.com/guinness-beer-stout-what-is-guiness/12969357/ being re-hashed in our local press. The actual article was 2017 which might be just before the "no safe limit" studies came out, but I saw it recently in one of our local news sites - they should know better. Why is it so acceptable to continue promoting something so harmful on so many levels? Alcohol should be going the way of cigarettes. Acknowledge and recognise the harm and push society away from the destruction it causes.

Upgrade to Windows 11 using Rufus.
Posted by: Bryan - 04-04-2023, 08:05 PM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (5)

I am ok with the method but, I am wanting to install the Win11 ISO over an existing Win10 SSD but that is Legacy.

By using the Rufus method, will the SSD be converted from MBR to GPT or do I need to do that myself and if so how?

  Free Office for Windows problem
Posted by: Roscoe - 04-04-2023, 03:50 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (5)

I am running Textmaker which is the free version of Microsoft Office.

It usually runs fairly well, but today I have struck a problem with the editing. If I want to insert some text in the middle of a sentence, for example, as I type it deletes the text after it, which makes editing impossible.

I am hoping that someone can tell me how to correct that.

Thanks in anticipation.

Just in case anyone is interested...

Disclaimer: You should pay for content from publishers.

Otherwise, I came across this Paywall filter list which can be added to adblockers.  I use Ublock Origin and seems to work OK, pretty sure these are standardised filter lists.  In NZ it mainly includes the NZ Harold Smile website specifically plus some overseas ones...  The website needs to be specifically supported.

Filter list URL is here.

To add it you need to open your adblockers settings, go to the "filter Lists" tab, and at the bottom of that page tick "Import"...  Paste the address above...

  Paris bans rental E scooters
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-04-2023, 03:07 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (13)

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65154854

"Parisians have voted to ban rental electric scooters in their city, dealing a blow to scooter operators and a triumph for road safety campaigners.
Almost 90% of votes cast on Sunday favoured a ban the battery-powered devices, official results showed.
But under 8% of those eligible turned out to vote.

The referendum was called in response to a rising number of people being injured and killed on e-scooters in the French capital.
Of the 1.38 million people on the city's electoral register, just over 103,000 took part, according to offical figures. Of these, over 91,300 voted against the scooters.
Paris was one of the first cities to adopt the electric vehicles - but critics argue they were causing more harm than good.

There was growing concern with the way some people were driving the scooters - weaving through traffic, dodging pedestrians on pavements, and getting up to speeds of 17mph (27km/h).
Riders often did not wear helmets and children as young as 12 could legally hire the e-scooters.

There was also criticism that groups of parked e-scooters were cluttering pavements.
In 2021, a 31-year-old Italian woman was killed after being hit by an e-scooter carrying two people. She fell and hit her head on the pavement, suffering a cardiac arrest.
But operators of the e-scooters argued the vehicles made up a small proportion of overall traffic accidents in the city."
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called the referendum, where voters could say if they were for or against free-floating e-scooters. Privately-owned vehicles were not part of the vote."

  Phone battery charging

Read some articles that phone batteries should not charge the phone battery to 100% every time.

Doing so will shorten the battery life. Is it true?

  Israel; Netanyahu & protests.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 02-04-2023, 03:46 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

He & his party are very, very hard right & while Israel has a big population of very orthodox & right wing Jews, there's also a large number of more moderate Jews many of whom are keen to see peace there.
It seems he didn't expect these widespread protests

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/4/1/...haul-pause

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/3/27...est-unfold

"Israelis have been protesting for months against PM NetanyahuÔÇÖs proposed judicial changes, which critics say will undermine the justice system.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has called for an immediate halt to the governmentÔÇÖs controversial judicial reform plans which have sparked months of street protests in the country.
Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes after three years of investigation.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has charged Netanyahu after investigating reports of him accepting gifts from millionaire friends and allegedly seeking regulatory favours for media tycoons in return for favourable coverage.

Netanyahu denies the allegations and pleads not guilty as the trial continues."

  Donald Trump Indicted
Posted by: king1 - 31-03-2023, 11:35 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (42)

Might be the beginning of the end for him...

Quote:The indictment has been filed under seal and will be announced in the coming days. The charges are not publicly known at this time, one source told CNN. Trump will likely be arraigned in court early next week, according to his defense attorney, Joe Tacopina.

The DA's office has been investigating the former president in connection with his alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels that dates to the 2016 presidential election. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office will reach out to Trump's attorneys to discuss his surrender to face an arraignment.

...

Trump's lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement that Trump "is a victim of a corrupt and distorted version of the American justice system and history. He will be vindicated."

Trump was caught off guard by the grand jury's decision to indict him, according to a person who spoke directly with him While the former president was bracing for an indictment last week, he began to believe news reports that a potential indictment was weeks -- or more -- away.
