Japan to release nuclear waste into Pacific
Posted by: Lilith7 - 11-07-2023, 03:55 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (12)

Its difficult to be sure that this won't cause problems at some point in the future & until they can be sure, it may be better to retain the water rather than risk damage to the Pacific.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-66106162

"A controversial plan by Japan to release treated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant has sparked anxiety and anger at home and abroad.
Since the 2011 tsunami which severely damaged the plant, more than a million tonnes of treated waste water has accumulated there. Japan now wants to start discharging it into the Pacific Ocean.
The UN nuclear watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has published a report endorsing Japan's plan.

But since it was announced two years ago, the plan has been deeply controversial in Japan with local communities expressing concerns about contamination.
Fishing and seafood industry groups in Japan and the wider region have also voiced concerns about their livelihoods, as they fear consumers will avoid buying seafood.
And Tokyo's neighbours are not happy either. China has been the most vocal, accusing Japan of treating the ocean as its "private sewer". On Tuesday it criticised the IAEA report, saying its conclusions were "one-sided".

Since the disaster, power plant company Tepco has been pumping in water to cool down the Fukushima nuclear reactors' fuel rods. This means every day the plant produces contaminated water, which is stored in massive tanks.
More than 1,000 tanks have been filled, and Japan says this is not a sustainable long-term solution. It wants to gradually release this water into the Pacific Ocean over the next 30 years, insisting it is safe to be discharged.
UN-appointed human rights experts have opposed the plan, as have environmental activists. Greenpeace has released reports casting doubt on Tepco's treatment process, alleging it does not go far enough in removing radioactive substances.

Critics say Japan should, for the time being, keep the treated water in the tanks. They argue this buys time to develop new processing technologies, and allow any remaining radioactivity to naturally reduce.
There are also some scientists who are uncomfortable with the plan. They say it requires more studies on how it would affect the ocean bed and marine life."

Went and saw it last night, was a good solid 3 hours of entertainment, can see why they split it up into two parts.
Probably the best film ive seen in the franchise so far, quite timely with the theme of AI too.

  That 30 kph thing...
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 10-07-2023, 11:44 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (30)

We've recently had broad swathes of red paint added to our little suburban road, with new signage to declare 30kph to enter the street, with 50kph to exit, and we are not alone. These changes, along with raising pedestrian crossings are all part of the move to 'calm' traffic in our towns and suburbs, and are being met with vast outrage from among the masses. I say 'among' because there is one thing every single critic has in common.

They all drive cars.

Chinese Computer OS to replace Windows.
Posted by: Mzee - 09-07-2023, 05:23 PM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (5)

I read a Review on the new Chinese OS which is replacing Windows in Government departments, and Banks. It is small, about 1.5 GB, based on Linux ground up, not based on any existing OS. It is  available in English on an iso. I tried to download it, but estimated time was 4 days, so gave up! Does anyone know anything about it?

ACT banging their drum yet again
Posted by: Lilith7 - 09-07-2023, 03:54 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (12)

Anything to get votes. "They'll be held accountable " has such a lovely ring to it & sounds like they really mean business & have every intention of ending, or at the very least drastically reducing crime.

They haven't. They won't & know they can't, end crime because human nature means it will in some way always be with us.

They could of course, manage to reduce it but that's of no use to them since their followers want ever harsher penalties & either don't know or (possibly more likely) don't care whether or it it works as long as someone is punished, preferably harshly.
Dodgy

Crime is far too useful to ACT & also National, it garners them votes whenever there's even a slight rise in crime & an election not too far away. They gain votes from the ignorant & or vindictive which they can then claim they'll reduce, punish those responsible etc. etc.

Not a chance in hell they'd actually do anything which could stand a chance of working; they need crime. And obviously don't mind the risk of creating lifelong criminals by using methods they know to be virtually useless.

"If young people under the age of 18 are sent to prison, they will be within a youth unit (or a segregated adult unit if a youth unit is not available), rather than housed within the general prison population."
Seymour said 17-year-olds were old enough to face adult justice.
"ItÔÇÖs an age when young people should understand that consequences come from breaking the law and that they will be held accountable for doing so."
"By placing these young men into the adult justice system where they belong, ACT will remove a burden from Oranga Tamariki which will help them focus on their core role. It will also ensure that 17-year-old youth offenders can be kept somewhere secure, where they can no longer harm others, and where they can get the appropriate rehabilitation."

Willful ignorance - even David Seymour surely knows that the human brain isn't fully functioning until the mid 20s. so very clearly a 17 year old is incapable of fully comprehending the consequences of their actions & should NOT be seen as 'old enough to face adult justice.' Dodgy

And I'm reasonably sure that putting young teens in the same prison as adult, even within a segregated unit, has failed when tried in the past.

Unscrupulous, cynical politicians will grasp at anything at all if they think its going to gain votes for their party; the consequences of their actions appear not to worry them.
Much like some of those who commit crimes...

Pride festival in Tbilisi cancelled due to bigotry
Posted by: Lilith7 - 09-07-2023, 12:10 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Good grief - you'd think that in the 21st century, those of a differing view might at least have the decency & sense to allow others their festival in peace but apparently that's too much to ask from the hard of understanding who have to exhibit their primitive, outdated views in order to cause  distress to others. The rise of the idiotic far right continues.
Dodgy

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66145898

"Up to 2,000 anti-LGBT protesters stormed a gay pride festival in Georgia's capital Tbilisi on Saturday, forcing its cancellation.
The right-wing protesters, who included Orthodox Christian clergy, scuffled with police, rushed the stage and burned rainbow flags.
The organisers and Georgia's president blamed anti-LGBT hate speech that preceded the event, and said the police had failed to protect festival-goers.

Homophobia remains rife in Georgia.

Far-right protesters also violently disrupted a Pride festival in Tbilisi in 2021, attacking journalists and LGBT activists.
The 2023 Pride organiser, Mariam Kvaratskhelia, said there had been a "mass mobilisation" of far-right groups ahead of this year's event. The groups had been "openly inciting violence", she said."

  Cheap lamb at PaknSave

I did the shopping today. Lamb forequarter was $7.99/kg. I don't know if it's the same everywhere but thought people might like to know to look out for it. They are big pieces. I have a saw to cut up and freeze. Or you could cook it whole and have plenty of cooked meat for followup meals.

Taliban - yet more restrictions on women.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 07-07-2023, 07:09 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Those evil ignorant bastards have outdone themselves; not content with barring women from education & working they've now announced they're closing beauty salons, one of the few places women are permitted to go, & a means of earning a living for those who operate them.

Several women in Afghanistan have attempted suicide or succeeded, thanks to the malevolent ignorance of the taliban.  Angry Dodgy

Mohammad Sidik Akif Mahajar, a spokesman for the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, confirmed to CNN the order had been given on June 24, with all salons to close by July 27.
Since re-taking control of the country in August 2021, following the shambolic withdrawal of the United States and its allies, the Taliban has rolled back decades of progress on human rights.
A salon owner in Kabul, who did not want to be named for safety reasons, told CNN she has yet to receive written notice of the order but the reports that sheÔÇÖd have to close had shocked her.
ÔÇ£I donÔÇÖt know how to express my feelings. My husband is jobless and this beauty salon is the only means to feed my family. I have four kids. They need food, clothes and school expenses,ÔÇØ she said.
ÔÇ£I donÔÇÖt understand why beauty salons should be banned. No woman is showing off her face with make-up outside. They are already wearing the hijab in public. This move will not only take away the income of so many families, but it will further deprive women of their rights and freedom.ÔÇØpiled after a week-long visit to Afghanistan by Richard Bennett, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, and Dorothy Estrada-Tanck, who led a contingent from the working gro

According to their report, women are banned from working in most sectors outside the home, and are prohibited from attending public baths, parks, and gyms. They must wear a loose-fitting black garment that covers their face, and theyÔÇÖre not permitted to leave home without reason, and even then not without a male guardian.

Reports of depression and suicide are widespread, the report found, especially among teenage girls whoÔÇÖve been prevented from pursuing an education. Almost 8% of people surveyed knew a girl or woman who had attempted suicide, the report said.

Restrictions imposed outside the home and economic hardship had resulted in ÔÇ£significant tensionsÔÇØ inside homes and a rise in domestic violence, and there was ÔÇ£notable evidenceÔÇØ of a ÔÇ£significant increaseÔÇØ in forced marriage of girls, the report found."
