  Boy's brains
Posted by: Lilith7 - 08-05-2022, 03:28 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

Came across this really interesting article about the differences in the  brain of young males. Its hardly surprising that they do daft things.
Worth reading the whole article.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/1285025...to-trouble

ÔÇ£I had his friends carry him inside the house and thought ÔÇÿthat must have been a powerful messageÔÇÖ. It was for the girls, but the boys went back to doing the same stupid s...ÔÇØ

Neuroscientist┬áNathan Wallis┬ásays boysÔÇÖ brains are encouraging them to do just that. While all adolescent brains shut down the frontal cortex, the part that deals with decisions and consequences, in boys that tends to manifest in risk-taking.

ÔÇ£We think thatÔÇÖs a bad thing because it leads to car accidents and stuff but on the other side it leads to innovation and creativity.ÔÇØ
But couple that risk-taking with the fact male brains reach maturity between the ages of 22 and 32, while for females it's between the ages of 18 and 24, and itÔÇÖs no wonder we see them stuffing up all over the place.

Andrew Hopgood puts it a bit differently, though the sentiment is the same.

ÔÇ£Teenagers are literally not all there. That frontal cortex gives us self-discipline and if youÔÇÖre not taught it as a youngster, because your frontal cortex doesnÔÇÖt start developing until your late teens, youÔÇÖre in trouble.ÔÇØ

Walker has been NZÔÇÖs principal youth court judge since 2016 and is quick to point out that although the number of young men he sees in court outweighs that of girls, he doesnÔÇÖt see them as more problematic.

ÔÇ£ThereÔÇÖs a different pathway into their offending and a different pathway out is often required. I donÔÇÖt think we do very well in giving gender-specific programmes.ÔÇØ

  Moving fibre box

I would like to have the internet fibre box (ont?) moved.
It shouldnÔÇÖt involve any additional cable as I would like it very close to entry point of cable to house.┬á
Who should I get to do this ?

Question Spark/Xtra email
Posted by: king1 - 06-05-2022, 09:20 AM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (9)

Had an odd appointment yesterday...

Client with an Xtra email account, 3 devices using imap, randomly emptying the inbox of emails.

After that they are gone, not in deleted, not in junk/spam etc just goneburger...

I changed the email password for her just in case someone else was playing games with her account (don't think this was the case as they should still be in deleted if someone is deleting them).  Within seconds of doing that and updating the passwords, the inbox full of test messages suddenly emptied again...

Anyone else struck that with Spark email?  i'm sure it's their end...

Simon Henry's comments about Nadia Lim
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-05-2022, 07:04 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (58)

What an absolute prick the man is - difficult to believe anyone still holds such damaging & outdated views but apparently he does & doesn't mind airing them publicly.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industr...m-comments

"Another KiwiSaver fund manager says it wonÔÇÖt touch shares in chemical company DGL after its boss made ÔÇ£racist and misogynisticÔÇØ┬ácomments about celebrity chef Nadia Lim.

Rich-lister and DGL chief executive Simon Henry told NBR that a photo of Lim in My Food BagÔÇÖs prospectus was ÔÇ£a little bit of Eurasian fluffÔÇØ. He said she was ÔÇ£showing some cleavageÔÇØ and showing off her sensuality to sell ÔÇ£scripÔÇØ.
Simplicity managing director Sam Stubbs said it would blacklist DGL until Henry had retracted the comments and ÔÇ£made amendsÔÇØ.
"If a chief executive says something like that, and you hold their shares you're endorsing the behaviour," Stubbs said."

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zeala...ining.html

"Lim said the comments are incredibly damaging for young Asian women.
"What's so damaging is young people who hear these things over and over again, who then over time somehow start to believe they are less capable and have less to give and contribute than their peers.

"That's why comments like this are so damaging. It's water off a duck's back to me, it's other people I feel really, really sad and disappointed for."
Lim said Henry could be using his position of power to celebrate diversity and inclusion but he's choosing not to. "

Russian state TV shows simulation of Britain and Ireland wiped out by nuke.
Posted by: Oldfellah - 04-05-2022, 03:02 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (3)

https://tinyurl.com/y2ue2383

One of Russia's top propagandists threatened Britain with annihilation by nuclear strike twice on his Sunday prime-time show ÔÇô once by air and once by sea ÔÇô ramping up the war of words against Britain over its vow to oust Russian forces from Ukraine.

ÔÇ£Why threaten horizonless Russia with nuclear weapons when you sit on a small island?ÔÇØ Kremlin-allied Dmitry Kiselyov said during his Sunday programme on Russian state TV in a segment he called The Sinkable Island.
ÔÇ£Just one launch, Boris,ÔÇØ Kiselyov said, referring to the British prime minister, ÔÇ£and England is gone. Once and for all. Why play with us?ÔÇØ

What this idiot doesn't understand is that Britain may be gone but Russia would be gone too, does he really think there would be no retaliation?

Where does one get those CD spindle/cake box things that packs of recordable CDs/DVDs usually come in? Ideally without the recordable media. Just the plastic containers, that's all I want.

America to overturn Roe vs wade
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-05-2022, 05:04 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (7)

Apparently all the news outlets are claiming this is about to happen in the USA. Whether you're against or in favour of abortion, this is a major law which is anti women in that it removes the rights women have over their own bodies.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/leaked-...022-05-03/

"WASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court looks set to vote to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide, according to a leaked initial draft majority opinion published by Politico on Monday.

The unprecedented leak from the conservative-majority Supreme Court sent shock waves through the United States, not least because the court prides itself on keeping its internal deliberations secret and leaks are extremely uncommon.

"This decision is a direct assault on the dignity, rights, & lives of women, not to mention decades of settled law," said former U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. read more

"It will kill and subjugate women even as a vast majority of Americans think abortion should be legal. What an utter disgrace."

Republican Senator Tom Cotton said: "...Roe was egregiously wrong from the beginning & I pray the Court follows the Constitution & allows the states to once again protect unborn life."

Ah yes - & never mind the rights of women over their own bodies, eh.
Time they made a few laws about men's bodies, men's fertility, I think, in view of the awkward little fact they're so studiously ignoring - that men can have many, many times the number of children that even the most fertile woman with several multiple births can have.

Perhaps they might also make a law requiring boys on entering puberty to have a reversible vasectomy; when they mature & want a family they can have it reversed.

Oh but NO!! That's far too controlling & invasive - what about their rights over their own bodies!

Oh wait... Big Grin Angel Dodgy

  Bonus bonds
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-05-2022, 02:37 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (9)

For anyone unaware, these are in the process of closing down.

I rang them as we'd had a letter about one or two of my late mother's bonds; I knew she'd bought one or two for my kids but when  a letter arrived about hers so though I'd best contact them

After about 40 minutes on the phone i got through & found that they were worth  the princely sum of $2! Once I stopped laughing, they asked did I want it or would I rather they donate it to the cancer society, so that's what I did. It isn't much but if everyone did it then the cancer society could do well out of it with luck. Smile
