Mariupol civilians evacuated
Posted by: Lilith7 - 02-05-2022, 02:51 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Two months in the dark can't have been much fun; they must be really pleased to be out finally especially those with children.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61292951

"Dozens of civilians have been evacuated from Mariupol to both Russia-controlled and Ukraine-controlled territory after weeks under siege.
Some have left the Azovstal steelworks, the last hold-out of Ukrainian troops in the strategically significant city.
Russia said dozens of civilians have arrived in a village it controls.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a large group is also on its way to Zaporizhzhia, which Ukraine maintains control of.

The United Nations confirmed that a "safe passage operation" had begun to evacuate the citizens on Saturday, and that it was involved alongside the Red Cross."

Or is it considered to be in the public domain?

A company commissioned by the Government has been monitoring social media comments about the COVID-19 response for almost two years, reporting back every four days.

Documents released to RNZ show Annalect surveilled public comments on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and other sites, about current topics like 'COVID response', 'virus', 'vaccine rollout', 'economy', 'business and consumers', 'contact tracing' and 'team of 5 million', posted by New Zealanders.

  The Russian army
Posted by: Lilith7 - 29-04-2022, 03:34 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (33)

Isn't doing so well, if this article is right. I wonder if humans will ever evolve sufficiently to end wars - seems unlikely at this stage.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/300...ssias-army

"The might of the modern Russian army was supposed to show the world that Russian President Vladimir Putin had restored his country to greatness after the humiliation of the Soviet collapse.

Instead, poor progress and heavy losses in Ukraine have exposed deep flaws within Russia.
For those threatened by PutinÔÇÖs aggression, a diminished army is a relief. Unfortunately, it also leaves a nuclear-armed power with a point to prove.

For Putin this is a crushing setback. That is partly because, although he controls a formidable propaganda machine to help drown out his critics, the loss of face threatens his standing at home."

  New Mask Exemption Regime
Posted by: king1 - 28-04-2022, 04:41 PM - Forum: Covid-19 - Replies (79)

This has to be a good thing, probably needed to happen sooner,  will it make much difference? since the old cards will still be valid...

Quote:ÔÇ£The new process is being introduced to make sure people who have genuine reasons for not being able to wear a mask have more certainty in being able to demonstrate that.

ÔÇ£For the business community, the new cards will mean evidence that a person with the new card is exempt from the requirement to wear a mask, removing uncertainty that businesses have been dealing with.

ÔÇ£WeÔÇÖve recognised that for some people an impairment, health conditions, a physical disability or mental health reasons can mean wearing a mask isnÔÇÖt possible. These reasons arenÔÇÖt always obvious or easy to explain and thatÔÇÖs left some New Zealanders whoÔÇÖre genuinely unable to wear a mask not being able to access the businesses and services they normally would.

Denial of bail silences Hong Kong protesters
Posted by: Lilith7 - 28-04-2022, 03:25 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (4)

Utterly ruthless - just lock them up, no trial & no prospect of one, until eventually people become so dispirited they'll plead guilty. How to snuff out democracy & protest. Dodgy

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-61235777

"China's national security law imposed on Hong Kong nearly two years ago has completely changed the territory's political landscape.
Free speech has been curtailed, civil society groups have closed down and only Beijing-approved candidates can stand in elections.
The law has also upended several long-standing legal principles - with one of the most radical changes relating to bail.

Previously, defendants would usually remain free until their trial, but under the national security law the presumption is that they will be remanded in custody after being charged.

Critics say this pre-trial detention undermines the idea of innocence until proven guilty - and is designed to break the will of those accused."

  Changing of street name
Posted by: Oldfellah - 27-04-2022, 10:24 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (17)

A Hamilton East street and park have been gifted new names to better reflect the cityÔÇÖs heritage.

Von Tempsky St will become Putikitiki St and the nearby Dawson Park will be Te Wehenga Park in line with a Hamilton City Council community committee vote on Tuesday night.

For crying out loud why? Think of the cost of doing this, think of all the maps that will need to be altered, think of all the satnavs telling you there is no such street, I wonder who was trying to keep their job by suggesting this, Von Tempsky St has had its name for as long as I can remember.

Bloody council!!!

  Possible new tax law
Posted by: Lilith7 - 26-04-2022, 03:11 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (55)

Its very seldom that I agree with a politician, but this may be what's needed or a part of it - assuming changes are eventually made. This won't go down well among many Nat voters.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...principles

"Revenue Minister David Parker will introduce a bill which would set out principles of fairness in the tax system.

Speaking at the Victoria University in Wellington, Parker said authorities had ÔÇ£virtually no idea what rate of tax is paid by the very wealthyÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£We do know the rate paid by wage and salary earners and by small business owners.ÔÇØ

The new bill, to be called the Tax Principles Act, was part of ParkerÔÇÖs work over the┬ápast few years┬álooking into the wealth levels of the richest New Zealanders and how much tax they pay.

ÔÇ£What it will do is allow any future tax policy development to be based on solid evidence.ÔÇØ

He also described GST, a 15% tax added when people buy goods and services, as a regressive tax because it takes a larger percentage of income from low-income earners than from high-income earners.

ÔÇ£National is proposing a return to what even the OECD has described is New Zealand tenants subsidising taxes for their landlords,ÔÇØ he said."
