Good news, because the kids should be presented both sides of the argument.

Europe really has got climate change priority sorted.

We already know the UK has made the right move to cut back on this, same goes with sweden

And Germany, they should have kept their nuclear.

https://euobserver.com/green-economy/157364

NZ should follow suit.
I spoke to the ACT candidates and they more or less told me they won't do any more than our trading partners are doing, ie pricing emissions on meat.

Labour to build more state houses
Posted by: Lilith7 - 24-09-2023, 04:09 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (11)

If elected. The bribes from both Labour & National are coming thick & fast now.

https://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/other/ele...882f6&ei=7

"Labour housing spokeswoman Megan Woods has promised 6000 additional public and transitional housing places if Labour is elected.

The promise was made at a campaign event in Wellington where Labour Leader Chris Hipkins warned National would wind back progress on state house construction.
ÔÇ£Labour is the only major party with a deliverable plan that will help ensure every New Zealander has access to a warm, dry, and affordable home,ÔÇØ Woods said.
ÔÇ£In just six years weÔÇÖve delivered over 13,000 public homes, the most of any Government since the 1950s. WeÔÇÖve also added over 4000┬á┬á┬á ┬á┬á

transitional homes. We are on track to deliver 21,000 public and transitional homes by 2025 and there is more to come. If re-elected, weÔÇÖll deliver another 6000 public homes by 2027,ÔÇØ Woods said.

Labour turned the fire on National too.

A fact sheet, released with the announcement reminded voters that during the financial crisis ÔÇ£National wound down the state house construction pipeline, knee-capping construction activity during a crucial time in the boom-and-bust cycle.

ÔÇ£This state house sell-off meant that they left office with 1500 fewer state houses than they began with,ÔÇØ the sheet said.

The party blamed National for the public housing waitlist which has ballooned under Labour, saying that if National had built rather than sold homes the waitlist would be much smaller.

ÔÇ£If National had built public housing at the same rate we are, there would be over 21,000 new public homes, accounting for over 85 percent of those on the current waitlist. They depleted our housing stock while sucking $576 million in dividends from Housing New Zealand. This election, National has not committed to any more funded public housing places beyond June 2025,ÔÇØ the sheet said."

Maurice Williamson complains about Te Reo posters
Posted by: Lilith7 - 23-09-2023, 03:58 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (2)

Former National pollitican & now Auckland councilor Maurice Williamson has compained about  posters promoting decolonisation.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/1329769...-workplace

"Veteran politician Maurice Williamson has made a complaint at Auckland Council over staff putting up posters in communal areas which promote ÔÇ£decolonisationÔÇØ actions for non-M─üori Kiwis ÔÇô including the correct use of Te Reo and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi).

Staff kitchens inside Auckland CouncilÔÇÖs Albert St headquarters have been deemed ÔÇ£politically neutralÔÇØ after Williamson repeatedly┬átook down Te Reo posters┬áand then complained to officials.
ÔÇ£I have torn several iterations down, but they keep being put straight back up again,ÔÇØ Williamson wrote in an email to council management in June.

One poster listed┬áÔÇ£10 Reo revitalisation strategiesÔÇØ┬ásuch as always greeting people in Te Reo, consuming M─üori TV and radio and practising the pronunciation of Te Reo out loud.

Another poster was headed ÔÇ£10 decolonisation actions for non-M─üoriÔÇØ. That one included speaking up when you hear racism, learn about the declaration of independence and Te Tiriti o Waitangi and advocating for fair treaty settlements.\

The poster incident had been flagged briefly in public at a council committee, by North Shore councillor Richard Hills. Stuff subsequently obtained the email exchange from the council.
Hills described the situation as disappointing and suggested it was childish.
ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs disappointing grown adults are ripping down posters and upsetting staff, just because the posters encouraged things like the use of one of our official languages and encouraged us to stand up to racism. WeÔÇÖre supposed to be focused on governing a city,ÔÇØ Hills said."

  Those chargers...
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 23-09-2023, 11:54 AM - Forum: Computing and Technology - No Replies

I am very happy with my refurbed Samsung tablet from Reebelo, it was cheap, works fine enough, arrived fast, and came with 12 months warranty. It also came with an unbranded charger described as 'fast' but wasn't. Knowing Samsung chargers and their ports can be a bit sus, I kept an eye out for an appropriate second hand  branded version and scored one for $3.

The unbranded one takes overnight to top up the tablet battery to 100%. The Samsung one takes two hours.

Score!  Big Grin

  India/Canada row continues
Posted by: Lilith7 - 22-09-2023, 04:06 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (2)

Its causing problems for tourists, India has stopped issuing visas for Canadians.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-66851964

"India has stopped issuing visas to Canadian citizens amid an escalating row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.
India said the temporary move was due to "security threats" disrupting work at its missions in Canada.

Tensions flared this week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said India may have been behind the 18 June killing.
But Mr Trudeau said on Thursday he was not looking to provoke India with the allegation.
India has angrily rejected the allegation, calling it "absurd".

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66883889

"The phone line at a Vancouver-based tourism company has been ringing non-stop since India announced that it will be suspending visa services for Canadian citizens.

Those who are planning to travel in the coming months are worried about what the ban means for them, said Radhika Sharma, who works at Explore India, which organises tours to the country.

Ms Sharma said travellers with a visa in hand should be fine "but people who have not yet applied, we're not sure if they are going to get it or not".

Travel issues for tourists are among many concerns that have arisen after India's announcement on Thursday, when it said it was suspended visa processing for Canadian citizens citing safety concerns for its staff."

Minor parties, leaders debate - 21st September 2023
Posted by: Lilith7 - 22-09-2023, 12:07 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (15)

I watched this last night - with, it has to be said, many, many winces at some comments from some of them. Rolleyes

Winston being Winston

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-air/earl...es-debate/

"New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, and Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson.
Rebecca Wright was the moderator and she did a commendable job keeping this lot under control, although it was a challenge and there was plenty of spirited bickering.
Performance wise Marama and Debbie managed to get their messages across crisply and put on a good double act. Marama in particular was ÔÇÿonÔÇÖ and didnÔÇÖt take any nonsense. ┬á┬á
David Seymour and Winston Peters in contrast tended to ramble and didnÔÇÖt always deliver a clear message. ┬á┬á
But there was plenty of fun as well. Especially when Rebecca Wright asked each party for their bottom lines in possible coalition negotiations. While Greens and Te Pati Maori spoke simply ÔÇöwealth tax and povertyÔÇö Winston Peters and David Seymour put on a show over whether they could work together that gave you a glimpse of what Luxon may have to deal with... "┬á┬á

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/...-live.html

"8:32pm - Wilson's standout moment was when Peters asked the "adults in the room" to "keep their trousers on" for the sheer oddity of that.

O'Sullivan said Peters got a punch in with the "cis white man" comment.
Lynch said there is no possibility Seymour and Peters can work together as they can't agree on anything.
"One of Winston's best jabs at him was he's not baiting he's imitating. It is quite incredible to watch the real-life transformation of David Seymour into a kind of low-rent  Winston Peters when he hates the guy," Lynch said.
Wilson said if the pair try to sit together around the Cabinet table it won't last long.
NZME's Fran O'Sullivan said she wanted Davidson and Ngarewa-Packer to break the "bromance" and debate on points as well. She did praise them for putting their hands up for a wealth tax, which Labour shyed away from.

"The question is can anyone [work with Peters]," Seymour said. "Nobody has been able to."

Davidson when people have something to lose, something they belong to, crime decreases. She wants community support to prevent violence and crime.
Peters said he wants gangs outlawed and wants them locked up separate from the rest of the prison population.
"There are 2000 spare beds in the prisons," he said.
Ngarewa-Packer said Te P─üti M─üori believes being tough on crime and soft on poverty is not the way forward. She said we "can't prison our way out of justice" and invest in prevention.

Davidson said Seymour wants to strip away agencies that highlight injustice, while Ngarewa-Packer said the cuts are "clearly about race".

Peters said to get equality we don't need separate "divisive" institutions.
Ngarewa-Packer said wanting a seperate M─üori health system and justice system is about trying to lift the playing field. She said the only way to address inequities is by addressing the fact "we were raised in a system not designed for us".
She accused Seymour of baiting with an "anti-M─üori rhetoric", to which he denied."

  ACT raising pension age
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-09-2023, 07:27 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (30)

How very surprising of them, whoever would have thought. Dodgy Rolleyes

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...ension-age

"ACT leader David Seymour says New Zealand must start raising the pension age, raising it three months every year until it reaches 67 years old.

"We have to be honest and say we're in a hole... countries are raising their ages of retirement to at or above 67," Seymour said.

The ACT leader dismissed concerns about the fairness of a blanket increase to the age of superannuation, rather than means testing.

Asked about the inequitable impact raising the pension age would have on M─üori, Seymour said raising the superannuation age was "a good reason to look after yourself".

A M─üori p─ôpi born today is currently expected to die 7.5 years earlier than a non-M─üori peer. Public health researchers have identified barriers dotted across the health sector that are preventing M─üori from accessing the same standard of healthcare as the rest of the population.

The National Party has also said the superannuation age should be lifted.

Labour Party welfare spokesperson Carmel Sepuloni has promised to keep the retirement age at 65 years old."

And there we have it - the entire view of ACT boils down to 'look after yourself & if you can't , well tough. We do not give a toss; its every man for himself & devil take the hindmost."
If you're wealthy we'll look after your interests - & if not, too bad. Dodgy
