Canada; Nazi mistakenly honoured
Posted by: Lilith7 - 29-09-2023, 03:39 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (2)

Not a good look. Canadian PM apologises

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66943005

"Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has apologised on behalf of Canada's parliament after a Ukrainian man who fought for a Nazi unit was unwittingly applauded in parliament.
"This is a mistake that deeply embarrassed parliament and Canada," Mr Trudeau said on Wednesday.
Speaker Anthony Rota, who has assumed responsibility for inviting Yaroslav Hunka, 98, resigned on Tuesday.
The incident has drawn global condemnation.
Mr Trudeau also apologised directly to Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who was visiting Canada and present in parliament, saying: "Canada is deeply sorry."
The Ukrainian leader was among those pictured applauding Mr Hunka, an image that has been exploited in Russian propaganda.

"All of us who were in this House on Friday regret deeply having stood and clapped even though we did so unaware of the context," Mr Trudeau said. "It was a horrendous violation of the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holocaust."

He said what happened was "deeply, deeply painful" to Jewish people and the many millions who were targeted by the Nazi genocide.
Mr Hunka, who fought with a Nazi unit in World War Two, got a standing ovation and was praised as a Ukrainian and Canadian "hero".
He served in the 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division, a voluntary unit made up mostly of ethnic Ukrainians under Nazi command.
Division members are accused of killing Polish and Jewish civilians, although the unit has not been found guilty of any war crimes by a tribunal."

"Yaroslav Hunka, the Ukrainian veteran who was applauded in parliament this week, served with a Nazi unit called the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS - also known as the Galicia Division - that was formed in 1943.
His appearance was criticised by Jewish groups and other parliamentarians alike. MP Anthony Rota, who invited him, has since resigned as the Speaker of the House of Commons, saying he deeply regretted the mistake.
But this is not the first time that Ukraine's role in WWII has sparked a debate in Canada, which is home to the largest Ukrainian diaspora outside of Europe.
Several monuments dedicated to Ukrainian WWII veterans who served in the Galicia Division exist across the country. Jewish groups have long denounced these dedications, arguing soldiers in the Galicia Division swore allegiance to Adolf Hitler, and were either complicit in Nazi Germany's crimes or had committed crimes themselves.
But for some Ukrainians, these veterans are viewed as freedom fighters, who only fought alongside the Nazis to resist the Soviets in their quest for an independent Ukraine.
The Galicia Division was a part of the Waffen-SS, a Nazi military unit that on the whole was found to have been involved in numerous atrocities, including the massacring of Jewish civilians.
During the war, more than one million Jews in Ukraine were killed. Most of them were shot to death near their homes by Nazi Germans and their collaborators.

Jewish groups have condemned Canadian monuments to Ukrainian veterans who fought in the Waffen-SS, saying they are "a glorification and celebration of those who actively participated in Holocaust crimes".

He literally is rehashing the same old same old and basically telling us they are just going to keep doing what they are already doing.
And to top things off, he keeps talking about the stuff National wants to do.
It's awesome, he literally is giving the opposition free airtime. In fact I learned about a few good things National is planning thanks to him!

That's why they are polling more now.
Been tons of discussion for and against him on the talk back today.
Like it or lump it his support is growing and very well has a high chance of being required to form this next govt along national and act.
NZF is the Thorn in the side to both major political parties that gets in the way of their plans to ruin NZ.
It's a love/hate relationship.
NZ has seen what the last 3 years has been like without NZF in govt and run buy a labour govt let loose.
That's why NZF have so much support.
And that's why I'm voting for them too, I would have gone ACT, but many like myself now feel confident that NZF will pass 5% so have changed their minds and going with NZF instead.
You can tell luxon is concerned going by what he is saying.

  Neanderthals still among us,Dan Wootton
Posted by: Lilith7 - 28-09-2023, 02:58 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (4)

Has been suspended for his reaction to comments made by a guest, Laurence Fox, on his show. Seems fair; he could have reacted differently. That he didn't really says it all.

I thought we'd progressed far more than this but it seems not. I hope they both have daughters & are able to learn from that. Dodgy

https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/30...t-comments

"Kiwi journalist┬áDan Wootton┬áhas been suspended by GB News, along with Laurence Fox, over FoxÔÇÖs offensive comments about a female journalist.
Appearing on WoottonÔÇÖs show on Tuesday night UK time, Fox said: ÔÇ£Who would want to shag that?ÔÇØ about Ava Evans, a political reporter.
Wootton laughed throughout and, according to screenshots posted by Fox, allegedly sent him a series of laughing face emojis after the broadcast.
In a statement on Wednesday, GB News said it had ÔÇ£suspended Dan Wootton following comments made on his programme by Laurence Fox last night. This follows our decision earlier today to formally suspend Mr Fox. We are conducting a full investigationÔÇØ.

Wootton issued two apologies, telling Evans that he thought she was ÔÇ£brilliantÔÇØ and ÔÇ£this is not what our channel is aboutÔÇØ.
He called the conversation with Fox ÔÇ£a bizarre exchangeÔÇØ, which he said had put him under ÔÇ£intense pressureÔÇØ.

Later, he said that he was ÔÇ£in no way amused by the commentsÔÇØ and had ÔÇ£reacted as I did out of shock and surpriseÔÇØ, adding that he ÔÇ£should have intervened immediately to challenge offensive and misogynistic remarksÔÇØ.

However, Fox shared a screenshot of a private social media exchange, which he claimed was between him and Wootton, shortly after the show was broadcast, in which he said: ÔÇ£Making you giggle is my weekly joy.ÔÇØ
Wootton allegedly replied with laughing face emojis and the message: ÔÇ£You can imagine them freaking out in the gallery!ÔÇØ
FÔÇîox and Wootton were discussing Evans after she had taken part in a BBC Politics Live discussion earlier in the day about the high rates of male suicide and whether Britain needed a minister for men.
Evans said the idea ÔÇ£feeds into the culture warÔÇØ and argued that the mental health crisis was not specific to men.

The broadcaster had earlier called FoxÔÇÖs comments ÔÇ£totally unacceptableÔÇØ.
Fox issued a statement on social media in which he claimed he was ÔÇ£totally within my rights to say that I wouldnÔÇÖt want to shag a hyper offended fourth wave feminist and not apologise, just as people are totally within their rights to be offended by my stating I would run a mile in the opposite direction from women like her, should our paths cross in a bar. ItÔÇÖs called free speechÔÇØ.

Reacting to FoxÔÇÖs remarks, Ms Evans told Channel 5ÔÇÖs Jeremy Vine show she was ÔÇ£really hurtÔÇØ and ÔÇ£shockedÔÇØ that the segment was broadcast following her saying that she would ÔÇ£rather be judged or askedÔÇØ about her work than body.

She also said: ÔÇ£Do you know this is the sort of talk that you worry that men have about you when youÔÇÖre not in the room?
ÔÇ£There is always sort of a worry in the back of your mind which is: ÔÇÿAre people actually interested in what IÔÇÖm saying or what IÔÇÖm doing?ÔÇÖ Or are they just looking at me ... physically, and I think that that clip proves that there are some men who are.ÔÇØ

Alan Hall penned by Gary McCormick
Posted by: jackford - 28-09-2023, 11:00 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Well said Gary...

Arthur Easton was stabbed to death in his Akld home.

2 blocks away Alan Halls life was going to change.

The attacker was R/handed, the witness saw a M─üori man, Alan is L/handed but that did not meet the plan.

Alan was detained for a long interrogation, 23hrs by all accounts to get an explanation.

Alan asked for a lawyer but that wasnÔÇÖt forthcoming. The very last thing good cops need is a lawyer asking questions.

It was AlanÔÇÖs Mum who discovered the lie, she found the original witness file. The one hidden from AlanÔÇÖs lawyers when they went to trial

Now the symbol of justice is a beautiful woman with a mask across her eyes, why is that we ask, is she smirking or hiding a smile?

Her servants of the justice dept had a laugh; presented with the truth, they shrugged & said thatÔÇÖs tough.

For you cannot go to dinner parties in Kelvin or Parnell thinking of poor old Alan rotting in his cell.

For what is Alan Hall but an ordinary man he is dust to mighty man they who forge the change.

Then there is that letter written from AlanÔÇÖs cell, Been thinking of you Mother hope all is well.┬á

All is not well Alan Hall the truth has had its out.

One innocent man imprisoned opens the door to doubt.

  'School Lunch Debt' - America
Posted by: Lilith7 - 27-09-2023, 06:06 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - No Replies

I'd no idea of this till I came it across earlier today. The Republicans are OK leaving it as is but Democrats want to change it. I hope they succeed.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/cancel...lunch-debt

"Crystal FitzSimons, director of school and out-of-school time programs at the Research and Action Center (FRAC), told the outlet, "Schools, families, and states really did not want to go back to having the complicated school nutrition operations where some kids have access to free meals and other kids do not, and they have to struggle with unpaid debt."
The families of almost half a million food insecure children in Pennsylvania collectively owe nearly $80 million in public school lunch debt, according to Fetterman's office. Nationally, more than 30 million kids can't afford their school meals and the total debt is $262 million annually.
California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Vermont have all guaranteed universal free school meals, and Nevada has a policy in place for the 2022-23 school year only. While lawmakers in other states are working to pass similar bills, advocates have called for federal legislation to ensure all schoolchildren are fed.

"Prior to the pandemic, some schools had┬áresorted to tactics that embarrassed kids, such as stamping their hands to remind parents of unpaid bills and substituting cold cheese sandwiches for hot meals,"┬áCivil Eatsreported┬áMonday. "Sometimes meals were thrown out in front of the children. And while experts say that fewer districts have resumed these practicesÔÇöoften dubbed 'lunch shaming'ÔÇöthey haven't gone away entirely either."

ÔÇ£Some school districts have created robocalls that call the parent every single night until the debt is paid off."

  David McCallum dead
Posted by: Lilith7 - 27-09-2023, 03:45 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

I'd no idea he was 90.

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...ies-age-90

"Actor David McCallum, who became a teen heartthrob in the hit series The Man from UNCLE in the 1960s and was the eccentric medical examiner in the popular television show NCIS 40 years later, has died. He was 90.
McCallum died on Monday of natural causes, surrounded by family at New York Presbyterian hospital, CBS said in a statement.
ÔÇ£David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away,ÔÇØ said a statement from CBS.
Scottish-born McCallum had been doing well appearing in such films A Night to Remember (about the Titanic), The Great Escape and The Greatest Story Ever Told (as Judas). But it was The Man from UNCLE that made the blond actor with the Beatlesque haircut a household name in the mid-60s."
