Special vote results

It sounds like TPM have gained another 2 seats, the Greens another 1 and National have lost 2 from election night's results. Long story short, Winston will be pulling Luxon's strings with Seymour also in the mix.

The case of the poisonous mushrooms; cook arrested.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 02-11-2023, 02:30 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (8)

Arrested but not charged so far.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/...three-dead

"Australian homicide detectives have arrested Erin Patterson, the woman at the centre of the investigation into the poisonous mushroom meal that resulted in the death of three people in Gippsland in eastern Victoria.

A source with knowledge of the case confirmed Patterson had been arrested and taken to Wonthaggi police station for questioning on Thursday morning.
Investigators are currently searching PattersonÔÇÖs Leongatha home, where the deadly family lunch took place on July 29.

ÔÇ£A search warrant has been executed at the Gibson Street address, with assistance from the AFPÔÇÖs [Australian Federal Police] technology detector dogs,ÔÇØ police said.

Police had previously named Patterson ÔÇô the estranged wife of the PattersonsÔÇÖ son, Simon ÔÇô as a suspect because she cooked the meals. Patterson has strenuously denied wrongdoing and said she could not explain how the meal caused┬áthe groupÔÇÖs illnesses and deaths.

Leftovers of the poisonous mushroom beef Wellington were tested by police during the investigation. Forensic tests were also conducted on a food dehydrator found at a Gippsland tip.
Patterson had previously given a sworn written statement to police documenting her side of the events leading up to and on the day of the lunch.
In the statement, she claimed she had panicked and dumped the appliance after she said people started accusing her of intentionally poisoning the meal."

The Nat's gang policy hits a bit of opposition
Posted by: Lilith7 - 01-11-2023, 06:23 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (18)

With regard to their idiocy around facial tattoos; the mob have hired lawyers. That might prove interesting - clearly Mark Mitchell & National are eager to appear tough, but perhaps they didn't consider that we already have one politician with a full Moko, nor that more & more Maori women are having  Moko Kauae. Can they legally apply such a daft law to just one section of the commmunity or will that prove illegal....

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/kahu/mongrel-...BKJDDEV6Y/

"The Mongrel Mob has instructed a lawyer to look at NationalÔÇÖs gang policy and threats that Foul Masks - members who have gang regalia tattooed on their faces - will be forced to use makeup to cover up.
Free speech advocates, meanwhile, said NationalÔÇÖs policy was ÔÇ£bad and counterproductiveÔÇØ, likely to ÔÇ£push gangs further underground to festerÔÇØ.
Tokoroa lawyer Arama Ngapo confirmed that she had been asked by the Mongrel Mob to investigate the legality of NationalÔÇÖs election pledge.
ÔÇ£I can confirm that I have been asked for legal advice on that matter,ÔÇØ Ngapo told the┬áHerald.

ÔÇ£If Mr [Prime Minister-elect Christopher] Luxon thinks the solution to gangs in Aotearoa/New Zealand is to ÔÇÿThin LizzyÔÇÖ the problem away, he is ignoring over 100 years of colonisation and systemic racism which left M─üori in a cycle of poverty that led to the creation of gangs.ÔÇØ

Last week potential incoming Police Minister Mark Mitchell announced that National - the majority party of the incoming coalition Government - may ban gang facial tattoos if its planned ban on gang patches does not work.
Mitchell said gang members will be made to apply foundation when they wake up in the morning or face arrest."

"Go south" nah, not so much
Posted by: Lilith7 - 01-11-2023, 02:28 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

So much for Israel telling Gaza refugees to go south because they'd be safe.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67264703

"Since the Israeli military issued the first of several instructions for civilians to evacuate north Gaza, hundreds of thousands of Gazans have moved to the south of the strip. But the south has continued to come under Israeli bombardment, leading the UN and other aid organisations to warn that nowhere in Gaza is safe for civilians.
To better understand the risk to civilians in south Gaza, BBC Verify has identified and analysed four specific instances of strikes in that region. We also looked at some of the warnings and evacuation instructions that were issued to Gazan civilians, including some advising them to move to certain areas in the south.

Some of these warnings were accompanied by maps with arrows pointing to vaguely defined areas to move towards. Three strikes we examined hit within, or close to, those areas in the days after the warnings were issued
The BBC has examined a strike on that day in central Khan Younis to understand the location and the scale of the damage. Video footage published in the aftermath of the attack shows rubble and collapsed buildings in the city centre. We have verified its location using visual clues such as the minaret of the Grand Mosque in Khan Younis.
We have also examined photos showing destroyed buildings, and people picking through what remains of cars and homes. We know the photos show the same location as that seen in the video because the same pharmacy sign can be seen in both. We also used reverse image search to check that the photos were not from an earlier incident.

We cannot discount the possibility that there were then subsequent different instructions, but the BBC has not found any evidence of this."

  Runonce

WinPatrol keeps capturing Runonce alerts, this one from Edge (and another from Onedrive)
What should I make of it?
I guess that if I didn't have WinPatrol istalled, programs like Edge would do stuff in behind the scenes and I'd be none the wiser?
What's known about Edge/Onedrive runonce?

Thanks

CTers claim Gaza/Israel war 'not real'
Posted by: Lilith7 - 29-10-2023, 04:06 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (12)

You have to wonder at the idiocies some can get themselves to believe.

https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-...bfb269258e

"In the days since Hamas militants stormed into Israel early Oct. 7, a flood of videos and photos purporting to show the conflict have filled social media, making it difficult for onlookers from around the world to sort fact from fiction.
While plenty of real imagery and accounts of the ensuing carnage have emerged, they have been intermingled with users pushing false claims and misrepresenting videos from other events.
Among the fabrications, users have shared false claims that a top Israeli commander had been kidnapped, circulated a false video imitating a BBC News report, and pushed old and unrelated clips of Russian President Vladimir Putin with inaccurate English captions.

Here is a closer look at the misinformation spreading online ÔÇö and the facts.
CLAIM: A major mosque in Iran raised a black flag to call Muslims to war over IsraelÔÇÖs attacks on Gaza.

THE FACTS: The Imam Reza shrine said the flag was raised as a symbol of mourning for the lives lost in IsraelÔÇÖs strikes on Gaza. Experts on Islam and Iran confirmed the flag includes a passage from the Quran that is meant to comfort Muslims that their sacrifices will one day be rewarded.
Social media users are sharing the false claim alongside images and videos of the distinctive gold dome of┬áthe shrine┬áÔÇö a major pilgrimage site for Shiite Muslims in IranÔÇÖs northeast that includes a mosque, library and other institutions ÔÇö with a black banner flying on a flagpole.

ÔÇ£BREAKING: The Black Flag has been raised over Razavi Shrine in Mashhad, Khorasan province, Iran,ÔÇØ wrote one Facebook user who shared the image on Oct. 18, using an alternate name for the complex. ÔÇ£This is a call for war or vengeance.ÔÇØ

https://www.npr.org/2023/10/10/120475512...l-and-gaza

"One viral video claims to show a Hamas fighter shooting down an Israeli helicopter ÔÇö but it's a┬áclip from the video game Arma 3. A video purporting to show an Israeli woman being attacked in Gaza was┬áfilmed in 2015 in Guatemala. An┬áunverified voice message┬ácirculating on WhatsApp, along with the note "forwarded many times," says a military official has instructed Israelis to stock up on cash, fuel and groceries. Fake accounts posing as a┬áBBC journalist┬áand the┬áJerusalem Post┬ánewspaper┬áspread false information widely before being suspended by X (formerly known as Twitter).
In the wake of Hamas' surprise attack on Israel and the escalation into war over the weekend, social media platforms and messaging apps are awash in viral rumors, misleading images and videos, and outright falsehoods, making it hard for people in Israel, Gaza and around the world seeking information and facts about the conflict.
Many online videos are being taken out of context or┬ámischaracterized┬áÔÇö a frequent occurrence in breaking news situations where interest is high but verified information is hard to come by."

  Safely Remove Hardware query
Posted by: Neil F - 29-10-2023, 11:44 AM - Forum: PressF1 - Replies (1)

Often when I have finished with using a USB I click on the icon "Safely Remove hardware".
The USB  was being used only. within Windows Explorer to copy or update file(s). I exit Windows Explorer for both my main drive and the USB drive but I still get "Device is still in use" messages.
Since I am not on the Internet nor any (known to me) other program besides Windows Explorer I am puzzled as to why I get this "device still in use" message.

Comments please
Thanks
