Govt have "no moral compass"
Posted by: Lilith7 - 12-12-2023, 02:54 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (25)

But to be fair, nor do most govts & politicians.
Although given that our new glorious leader is religious, perhaps we could have expected better, y'know, a bit of the Christian concern for the well being of others, especially at this time of thee year. Although that maybe only applies to the already wealthy...?

I'm amazed that anyone thought Luxon could in any way, control Winnie. Rolleyes

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/l...VUX3Z3AVY/

"Hipkins said that the new Prime Minister Christopher Luxon needs to show some leadership, particularly towards Winston Peters, who Hipkins claims has overstepped majorly.
ÔÇ£He needs to talk to Winston Peters and tell him his comments are unacceptable,ÔÇØ Hipkins said.
Hipkins called on Luxon to ÔÇ£stamp it outÔÇØ and ÔÇ£act like a prime ministerÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£I am not overly confident that Luxon has control over his government,ÔÇØ he said.

ÔÇ£New Zealanders did not vote for a windfall gain for landlords being applied retrospectively, which is effectively what they are planning to do with the announcements they have made.ÔÇØ

On the removal of the smoke-free laws, Hipkins said it was ÔÇ£morally reprehensibleÔÇØ.
ÔÇ£It shows just two days into government they have already lost their moral compass,ÔÇØ Hipkins said.
ÔÇ£It is an international embarrassment as well, the first major headline that this government has attracted is their decision to increase the number of New Zealanders who smoke cigarettes.ÔÇØ

Miserable bastards! Govt 90 day no fault eviction in use already.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 12-12-2023, 02:42 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (11)

Approximately 20 seconds after the present idiot govt passed their landlord-friendly 90 day no fault eviction, some heartless prickles gave their tenants notice.
in the season of goodwill to all, you'd think they might have at least waited until after the Xmas/New Year period but apparently greed won't wait.

"Tenants of about 30 neighbouring Christchurch houses that were previously bought for a mall expansion that never happened have been given 90 days to move out.
The properties, on Marshland and Golf Links roads by The Palms mall in Shirley, have been sold as a single lot by Australian investment fund Dexus, which took them over from previous owner AMP Capital.

The houses were left unsold when AMP Capital sold the mall to another investor for $88.8 million last year.
The sale of the houses is now unconditional, and the tenants have been told they must leave by early March to provide vacant possession.

Dexus spokesman Luke OÔÇÖDonnell confirmed the sale but said details, including the identity of the buyer and the price, remain confidential.┬áThe land is zoned┬áfor redevelopment either as medium density housing or commercial use.

Golf Links Rd resident Hamish McDougall is one of those who received an eviction notice last week.
McDougall, a retiree aged 68, said the property manager had kept them informed about the properties being up for sale, but they had hoped some would still be rented out.
He said many in the neighbourhood were shocked, partly because of having to find a new home at this time of year.

ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs bloody lovely, right on Christmas, and weÔÇÖre going to lose a month because of Christmas.
ÔÇ£IÔÇÖve been here 23 years. They want everybody out - I canÔÇÖt believe theyÔÇÖre going to knock them all down.ÔÇØ

McDougall said he has started looking for another rental, but it was difficult to find one that would take his 1-year-old terrier, Scout. He also has an adult son living with him, and needs storage space for his gardening tools and other belongings.

Another tenant, who did not want to be named, said the eviction notice coming right before Christmas was stressful for their family of seven, which includes two children with special needs.
He said they were feeling anxious, and had been told there would be no extensions on compassionate grounds.

ÔÇ£For my family, we are faced with a potential rental increase of between 50% and 90% based on the limited properties available.ÔÇØ
The tenant also said they had been told they must have the carpets professionally cleaned before moving out.
ÔÇ£I understand reasonably clean and tidy, but it seems unfair and yet another cost burden on tenants, especially if the properties are to be demolished.ÔÇØ

Texas woman granted, then denied abortion on medical grounds
Posted by: Lilith7 - 11-12-2023, 06:01 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (16)

This seems a straightforward case where an abortion should be given as soon as possible; this woman is likely to lose the ability to have children if an abortion is denied.

That she's likely to now be denied that & have to suffer throughout a tragic pregnancy which could end her abiity to have children, shows very clearly that this isn't about 'the sanctitiy of life' but is instead about controlling women. Dodgy

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/preg...-105522411

"AUSTIN, Texas -- Kate Cox, a mother of two in Texas, became pregnant again in August but soon after learned devasting news: Her baby has a fatal condition and is likely to either be stillborn or die shortly after birth.
The tragic circumstances have thrust Cox, 31, into the center of an unprecedented challenge over abortion bans that have altered the landscape for women in the U.S. A Texas judge gave Cox permission this week to receive an abortion, but the state's highest court put that decision on hold Friday night.
Whether Cox, who is 20 weeks pregnant, can legally receive an abortion under narrow exceptions to the state's ban is now in limbo while the Texas Supreme Court considers her case. The court, which is made up of nine Republican justices, gave no timetable on when it might rule.
In October, doctors told Cox that her fetus was at a high risk for a condition known as trisomy 18, which has a very high likelihood of miscarriage or stillbirth, and low survival rates, according to the lawsuit. Her attorneys say Cox has been to the emergency room at least four times, including this week, and that her health is put increasingly at risk the longer her pregnancy lasts.
Doctors have told Cox that inducing labor or carrying the baby to term could jeopardize her ability to have another child in the future.
ÔÇ£I really would love another baby," Cox told NBC News this week after a lower court judge granted her permission for an abortion, ÔÇ£So, IÔÇÖm hopeful for my health, our family.ÔÇØ

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-abort...-kate-cox/

"Following Thursday's ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office issued a statement saying the temporary restraining order "will not insulate hospitals, doctors, or anyone else, from civil and criminal liability for violating Texas' abortion laws."
Paxton's office also included a letter sent to several medical centers outlining action it will take against doctors who perform an abortion."

  Another leak, govt.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 11-12-2023, 10:46 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - No Replies

While its happened with previous govts, its never a good look.

https://thestandard.org.nz/the-governmen...aky-thing/

ÔÇ£Another day and another leak.
And this time it calls into question the GovernmentÔÇÖs commitment to informed decision making.
From Thomas Coughlan at the Herald:

Quote:The new Government has been rocked by the leaking of another confidential paper to the┬áHerald┬áÔÇô the second to spill in just five days.
Quote:This paper, from Treasury, said the Government has quietly suspended Regulatory Impact Analyses (RIA) for some proposals in its 100-day plan, meaning they will not go through the proper process before becoming law.
Quote:The former Government also briefly suspended RIA during the pandemic.

The paper said the cabinet agreed that proposals that ÔÇ£solely repeal legislationÔÇØ and ÔÇ£not seeking approval for new policyÔÇØ will have the requirement for a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS ÔÇô another name for an RIA) ÔÇ£suspendedÔÇØ.
This means that projects, including the potential repeal of Fair Pay Agreements, or the legislation underpinning the GovernmentÔÇÖs┬áSmokefree legislation, will not get the traditional level of regulatory scrutiny.


Quote:The decision to suspend RIS means some of the the promises to repeal the former GovernmentÔÇÖs agenda will face almost no scrutiny, given the new Government intends to repeal some things, like FPAs, under urgency.
Quote:RIS requirements are staying for ÔÇ£new proposalsÔÇØ in the 100-day plan, however they are having their formal quality assurance requirement scrapped.
I guess they were burned after the first leak showed that Brooke Van Velden was not only totally indifferent to the effects of reversing the Fair Wage policy on women, Māori and Pasifika, she was also shown to ignore official advice and she was also caught out telling porkies.

The Government is claiming that it is working at pace and has no time for such pesky reviews to take place.  But the pace is of its own making.  And some of the changes could be made at a more careful pace.
For instance the change to the Smoke Free legislation can and should be taken at a more leisurely pace so that the implications and effects can be properly understood.  The only possible reason to ram it through is get the tax take quicker.  More lung cancer to fund tax cuts for landlords.
And the Fair Pay legislation could also be put through a proper process.  So that the people of New Zealand can then understand that a Government that says it is intent on addressing cost of living pressures is actually undermining a policy that will improve the plight of skilled but underpaid workers.
But as shown by this recent leak these do not worry the current Government.┬á It prefers to engage in doctrinaire attacks on good policies at the behest of its funders.ÔÇØ

I have been told that a text document that I scanned for someone without a scanner, and emailed to them arrived with a grey background.    Th original did NOT have a grey background.  I scanned it on my Brother DCP J1050DW Printer, using Nuance Paperport 14 software.  Sent using Outlook (Office 365).

I sent it to myself and it looked OK.  I don't know if it is my problem or their's.   Can anyone help?
