Turns out that its not even the original shield anymore as far as the wood bit goes, its been replaced. I would have thought they would have retained the original wood even if it was old and worn, gives it a bit of its history. To me the split looks so straight that its likely split on a glued joint as its likely made from several pieces glued together. The old wood may have held up longer!
