Yeah I was reading about that.
Turns out that its not even the original shield anymore as far as the wood bit goes, its been replaced.
I would have thought they would have retained the original wood even if it was old and worn, gives it a bit of its history.
To me the split looks so straight that its likely split on a glued joint as its likely made from several pieces glued together.
The old wood may have held up longer!

I was surprised that it seemed so flimsy really, thought they'd have made it from something more solid - & kept part of the original to somehow include that with it.
