The cruelty of MIQ
#1
http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/new...pp-android

Faceless people casting lots to decide who can and can't leave early even when the risk to health is so low as to be ridiculous.

208 new infections yesterday -19 in MIQ?  Where is the risk MBIE?

I wonder how many lives MIQ has saved? Cruel? I guess it depends on who you ask, the whingers or those who benefited...

When community infections are 10 to1 where is the risk?

It is an unanswerable question, because we have no idea what life without MIQ in place would be like.

Would you have liked to risk that? In this small country where everyone knows each other with only one or two degrees of separation?

Not me thank you. I like being alive.

Not saying MIQ didn't have its place. However with the present level of infections in the community the present need for it is basically nullified.

Probably better that those sorts of decisions are made by medical professionals - they will have a far better view of the big picture.  As you suggest though MIQ has certainly served its purpose, and it's role will no doubt be changed to suit the needs at the time...

Well the good news is it appears MBIE has folded and will allow him to visit. A better result than the poor woman who sat in her hotel room across from Christchurch hospital begging to be let out early only to have her mum die 2 days before she was released.

I would be interested to know the qualifications of those making the decisions in these matters.  Somehow I doubt they are doctors or specialists in communicable diseases.

Considering a motality rate of 1% for covid the chance of being alive are high regardless.  More likely I will die from a train derailment on my way to work.

Phased...

As in that phase has passed and we are entering a new and more dangerous one. But don't let that faze you, just wear as many masks as you can fit on your face and get boosted.

If only those advocating for people to die were willing to be first in that very short queue.

it is actually less than 1%.  And it is 1% of those infected may die.  Not everyone in general.  700 people a year die of flu.  10000 die of cancer.  380 people a year die from car accidents.

If you look at the number of covid infections in NZ vs deaths that mortality is even lower especially when you consider the majority of people who died were already old and infirm.  Hell one person shot by police is in the official covid deaths

The pandemic is an entirely new situation for most countries around the world; mistakes have been & likely will continue to be made because this is very much a 'learn as we go' for all of us.

Just as our ancestors eventually learned that it wasn't a very good idea to keep the bodies of those who died from the black plague around for too long after death.
in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)

Well it's entirely helpful that the numbers we have had are the direct result of a relatively speaking, well managed pandemic response. Had that not been the case or things turn for the worse in NZ then your 1% is still going to be a lot of people dying...

Some would say only one preventable death is too many...

We can't save everyone.  Would be nice if we could  but we cant.  You could say we could ban all cars as they kill 380 people to year -  many of those deaths preventable.

maybe, but we shouldn't allow people to die unnecessarily either.
