One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded happened (8.8 magnitude) at ~11:30 NZT. Live video feed of the Japanese coastline tops Stuff's news feed on this with tsunami expected to hit Japan around 4:00pm NZT. New Zealand will likely see tsunami activity at around 11:30pm NZT.

I guess we'll hear what to expect from the Solomons and Noumea as it passes through that region a few hours prior to it getting here.

This success for the Whanganui District Council is heartening. The government doesn't realise the strength and tenacity of local opposition to the Fast Tracking of this highly controversial activity.
