  What's the deal with Hoyas?
Posted by: thephoenix - 17-07-2020, 12:11 PM - Forum: Gardening & DIY - Replies (2)

Why do people pay so much for them on TradeMe? I get that they're slow-growing, but they're not particularly attractive. Is the market only being driven by people thinking they can propagate them so they can relist multiple plants in a few years time. Suspect that quite a few buyers don't realise how slow-growing they are.

  Waxeyes
Posted by: thephoenix - 17-07-2020, 12:05 PM - Forum: Pets & animals - No Replies

Dear Waxeye population,

Please stop crashing into the windows of the house.

If it doesn't kill you, you just sit there stunned for ages while the cat gets rather excited. She would like nothing more to eat you, but that's not the way you should go out. You should die of old age, surrounded by your waxeye friends and family. Your final word will be a quiet, stoic tweet and the bird doctor will shut your eyes with their wing like they do in the films. Your funeral will be a quiet dignified affair, and there'll be a generous helping of birdseed at the reception where the waxeyes can catch up with their distant waxeye relatives and remark how so-and-so has let themselves go or how dare Steve show up after the things he tweeted.

But all that is by the by.

Stay clear of the windows!

All the best,
Birdman

  National's $31 billion transport spend
Posted by: thephoenix - 17-07-2020, 11:53 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (9)

Any potential spending on transport infrastructure is a good thing, although it would be remiss of people familiar with National's popular catch-cry to not ask "where is the money coming from?"

They might have some problems selling the plan to the rest of NZ (i.e. the real part) because it comes across as a little Auckland-focused at the moment.

  Catching COVID twice?

Some worrying reports coming out regarding limitations of immunity from COVID and the implications this has for both herd immunity and immunisation strategies.

Ironically, the Listener with the greater number of subscribers is problematic to bring back thanks to all liabilities caused by the number of subscriptions. If only they'd made the magazine less readable, lol.

  Another escapee
Posted by: datoofairy - 10-07-2020, 12:11 PM - Forum: Covid-19 - Replies (13)

I see on Stuff 'breaking news' another person escaped, this time from Hamilton.  They have been caught, but there no details yet how long they were out for or if they have tested positive or not.
Its so incredibly selfish of these people to leave isolation. Not only for the risk they pose to the entire country but because it means all the people behaving themselves in isolation will need to be treated like dangerous prisoners too.

  Tiwai smelter to close

Was only last year they had reopened their mothballed potroom to increase production!

I really hope we see cheaper electricity prices as a result. Shame so many jobs will be lost though.
