Economic Markers - How do YOU gauge the economy
Posted by: king1 - 07-07-2022, 09:42 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

My goto economic marker for how well the economy is doing has always been...

Harvey Norman - interest free period duration...
When things are bad, doom and gloom all around, interest free period scoots up to 60 months
When they are all good, their interest free period is usually 18/24 months

Just wondering if anyone has any other different, slightly offbeat, indicators they watch, other than the usual media/economist statements.

Question Is it just me, or is the trade website getting even worse?

Navigating round trade is a real pain at the moment.
Also looks like they are trying to make the page more optimized for mobile devices rather than desktop computers.

Gifting 2nd home to my son?
Posted by: Corky - 04-07-2022, 04:48 PM - Forum: Real estate - Replies (17)

Hello

I have tried searching for help on this subject but most articles keep going on about the property being subject to brightline testing.

I have my own house and lived in it freehold for 26 years. I bought a 2nd house across the road 5 years ago and it is also freehold and not subject to the brightline test. I am now 64 years old and feel I have sufficient money to see out the remainder of my life without having to sell the 2nd house.
Here is my question: My only child who is 32 currently lives in the house and I would like my son to have the house as a gift without any money changing hands. Can I do this without having to place the house into a trust or pay a huge tax bill as I simply want him to have a good start in life? I am not sure what would happen if for some reason I ended up in a rest home at some stage as my current house would be more than enough equity to pay rest home expenses if required.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Star The return of Angry Andy
Posted by: Wainuiguy - 04-07-2022, 09:30 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (18)

Did Angry Andy ever go? Or was he just pushed into the background a bit so he didn't come off as so combative?

Certainly his attacks on the Nurses failure to sign off on their contract was telling. I think he believed that the Union would simply sign it off - but forgot the members need to do that. Strange as the former Union head.

His constant denial of a crisis, his outright lies in a recent interview highlighted by those working in health shows a man barely holding on.

The spread of anti feminist bollocks
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-07-2022, 03:28 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (2)

Which surprisingly, is indeed still with us. I think perhaps its high time that at least a little of the history of women's rights was taught in high schools, because the twisted nonsense which is being spread helps no one.
Its the 21st century fgs, not the 19th. The whole article makes scary reading. Angry Dodgy

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/3006210...m-movement

"In a tour of the country earlier this month, Hannah Spierer addressed a crowd in W─ünaka.

ÔÇ£If you are a working mother, and youÔÇÖve got children in a school, and you feel that there are some things you donÔÇÖt like about schools, just consider that maybe quitting your job now is a sacrifice worth making,ÔÇØ she said.
ÔÇ£Too many women have been conditioned to sacrifice the raising of their own children.ÔÇØ She went on to explain - as she has during so many stops on the tour as one half of the┬áright-wing propaganda network Counterspin┬áÔÇô that ÔÇÿtoxic femininityÔÇÖ needs to be talked about, that feminism is a mind-control program, and that women have been led to believe theyÔÇÖre only worth something if they work outside the home.
ÔÇ£ThatÔÇÖs not true. We can save our kids.ÔÇØ

THAT is absolute BS for starters; the reason women have to work isn't due to this imaginary 'toxic feminism'. Its entirely due to the neo liberalism which has been imposed on this & other countries so that for most its now a matter of necessity rather than choice. Interesting that this lot are now trying to blame women for it.

"At home in the North Island, Hannah Blake felt her heart sink. She knew that language. Watching Spierer speak, she experienced a sensation sheÔÇÖd felt building since the┬áWellington ÔÇÿanti-mandateÔÇÖ protest. Blake, a former homeschooled Palmerston North mum, had been following the main channels of the disinformation movement since becoming disquieted with the way some women were talking.
ÔÇ£Let the boys be boys,ÔÇØ personal trainer and ÔÇÿcorrespondentÔÇÖ Caro McKee tells Spierer in an early clip, from Parliament. ÔÇ£Let them lead usÔǪ we have to sometimes back off and be that little submissive person and let our boys stand up.ÔÇØ
Spierer agrees. ÔÇ£We have to lead the charge in that conversation because if men do it theyÔÇÖll just be called chauvinist, or theyÔÇÖll just be called sexist.ÔÇØ

Homeschooled in New Zealand in a Christian fundamentalist household, Blake was taught that women existed to serve their man. And now, these ideas were being parroted in ÔÇÿalternative mediaÔÇÖ, social media and Telegram, where live streamers who once held court about the dangers of┬ávaccination┬áand the mainstream media were now railing against feminism, or applauding the reversal of┬áRoe v Wade, leaving millions of women in the United States unable to access abortion.

ÔÇ£Hearing the same viewpoint about women belonging at home, about feminism being dangerous, about women needing to have children young, about women needing to shut up and let men talk, the concept that suddenly we are over toxic masculinity, all these talking points that I had heard from all my religious instruction growing up were suddenly being parroted, and I was like ÔÇÿOh no, oh noÔÇÖ,ÔÇØ Blake says.

ÔÇ£Seeing the recent surge with the marriage of┬áQAnon and Q-adjacent theories with this fundamentalist Christian worldview is frankly terrifying.ÔÇØ

Far-right spaces, particularly online, have always been hostile towards women. Two of the most visible examples are in incel culture, where misogyny is a key driver of the ideology, and Gamergate, a campaign of sustained online abuse towards women journalists in gaming.

Massey University PhD researcher Donna Carson says misogyny is a key component of almost every extremist ideology, but in trying to expand their reach┬áwhite supremacists┬áhave realised they need women to promote their worldview. ÔÇ£They know women can sell it, and if they can hook women in on that traditional family nous itÔÇÖs not too hard to indoctrinate them into these other beliefs,ÔÇØ

Coming from women, and cloaked in the idealisation of motherhood, reproduction and the satisfaction gained from traditional family values, racist, sexist and bigoted ideas can be sold as more palatable ÔÇô and less threatening.

In short; itÔÇÖs sexism, as a gateway to┬áfascism."

Country calendar, my favorite show now just an outlet for woke propaganda...

Ask any farmer and most will tell you what you see on their show is not typical for most farmers, except for the very wealthy ones.

Not everybody has got millions to splash around after selling an alcohol brand to a big corporation.

Sustainable sheep farming? Carbon zero? Seriously? For sheep?
Why dont they ditch their quad bikes and jump on a horse if they really want to make a difference.

""Proud boys" designated a terrorist group by govt.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 30-06-2022, 03:24 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (12)

Not before time; they're a repulsive little group with some extremely nasty views.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...anisations

"The Government has quietly designated two United States far-right organisations, the Proud Boys and The Base, as terrorist organisations.

The legal designation of the two groups ÔÇô which would have been signed off by the prime minister ÔÇô was made on June 20, and made public in the New Zealand Gazette on June 27. The decision was not otherwise announced by the Government.
The designation means people who recruit for the groups or provide them with material support could be prosecuted under the Terrorism Suppression Act.

The Proud Boys are a fascist organisation aligned with former US President Donald Trump, who were part of an attack of the US Capitol in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.

The attack on the Capitol, an attempt to prevent the finalisation of an election result that would end the Trump presidency, has also been called an insurrection or attempted coup.

Two members of The Base, a white-supremacist, neo-Nazi group, were in 2021 sentenced to nine-years in prison after a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe found they planned to attack a state capitol, according to Associated Press."

Canada has also designated them as a terrorist entity.

https://www.npr.org/2021/05/02/992846086...-in-canada

"In February, Canada added three right-wing groups to its list of terrorist entities. Included on that list, the Proud Boys. And that's an organization founded in 2016 by a Canadian living in the U.S."

And this from the Southern poverty law centre:
https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/...proud-boys

"The Proud BoysÔÇÖ actions belie their disavowals of bigotry: Rank-and-file Proud Boys and leaders regularly spout┬áwhite nationalist┬ámemes and maintain affiliations with known extremists. They are known for┬áanti-Muslim┬áand misogynistic rhetoric. Proud Boys have appeared alongside other┬áhate groups┬áat extremist gatherings such as the ÔÇ£Unite the RightÔÇØ rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Former Proud Boys member┬áJason Kessler┬áhelped organize that event, which brought together a broad coalition of extremists including Neo-Nazis, antisemites and militias. Kessler was expelled from the group after the violence and near-universal condemnation of Charlottesville rallygoers.

Other hardcore members of the alt-right have argued that the ÔÇ£Western chauvinistÔÇØ label is just a ÔÇ£PR cuck termÔÇØ McInnes crafted to gain mainstream acceptance. ÔÇ£LetÔÇÖs not bullshit,ÔÇØ Brian Brathovd, aka Caerulus Rex, told his co-hosts on ÔÇ£The Daily Shoah,ÔÇØ an antisemitic podcast popular with the alt-right. If the Proud Boys ÔÇ£were pressed on the issue, I guarantee you that like 90% of them would tell you something along the lines of ÔÇÿHitler was right. Gas the Jews.ÔÇÖÔÇØ

Rocket Lab - CAPSTONE Launch 28/06/2022
Posted by: king1 - 29-06-2022, 04:14 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (3)

Just in case you missed it...

This one sets a satellite into a unique orbit around the moon.
From what I understand it will be a test of the orbit that might be used for a bigger gateway station to placed in the same orbit down the track...

Pretty impressive stuff for little ol' NZ.  The actual launch starts around 58 minutes in

Quote:CAPSTONEÔÇÖs primary objective is to test and verify the calculated orbital stability of a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit around the Moon, the same orbit planned for Gateway. NASAÔÇÖs Gateway is a small space station that will orbit around the Moon to provide astronauts with access to the lunar surface. It will feature living quarters for astronauts, a lab for science and research and ports for visiting spacecraft. CAPSTONE will also test a navigation system developed by Advanced Space that will measure its absolute position in cislunar space using interaction with NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter without relying on ground stations for navigation support.
