  Christchurch Call
Posted by: king1 - 24-01-2024, 08:50 AM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

Looks like this might be next for the National chopping block...

Quote:Ardern launched the initiative with French President Emmanuel Macron to international acclaim in 2019, when she was still prime minister.
The stated aim was to combat the spread of terrorist activity and propaganda online by seeking global cooperation from other nations, along with social media and tech giants.
It followed the March 15, 2019, mosque terror attacks in Christchurch, which claimed 51 lives and was live-streamed on Facebook.

...

A spokesperson for the prime minister confirmed: ÔÇ£Christopher Luxon met with special envoy Dame┬á
Jacinda Ardern just before Christmas to discuss her work.

ÔÇ£Decisions have not yet been made as the prime minister is waiting for advice from officials,ÔÇØ they said.
Asked to clarify when that advice is expected to come back and decisions made around the role, the spokesperson said on Monday they ÔÇ£donÔÇÖt have anything to add to the statement at this stageÔÇØ.

  Missing man Tom Phillips
Posted by: Lilith7 - 23-01-2024, 02:16 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (5)

Still thought to be hiding with his children in the Marakopa area. This has to be tough on the rest of the family.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/missing-ma...R4FZCJYFM/

"Police believe missing fugitive Tom Phillips and his children are hiding in or near his home town of Marokopa, and have stipulated they are not offering a reward if he is found, and that people should not approach him because he could be armed.
The search for Phillips and his three children ramped up after a sighting of him last August after they went missing in December 2021.
Phillips evaded the attention of police for 19 months before he was seen shopping while wearing a disguise, stole a car and then got into a fight with a member of the public last August.

Police then linked Phillips to a bank robbery last May.

The latest incident involving Phillips saw him allegedly steal a bike with one of his children and smash a storefront on November 2 - almost two years after he and his three children disappeared.
Today, Acting Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders said police believed Phillips was hiding in western Waikato within Marokopa or the surrounding areas.
ÔÇ£We continue to review existing evidence and new information and appeal to the community to pass on any details that could help the three children be reunited with their family,ÔÇØ he said.
ÔÇ£The investigation team working on this case have one focus ÔÇô to bring Ember, Maverick and Jayda home.ÔÇØ

  Wireless lan to Ethernet bridge
Posted by: nzoomed - 23-01-2024, 11:18 AM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (5)

Anyone used these before? Ive never had the need for one until now.
I dont see anything that PB tech stock, but jaycar stock these.
https://www.jaycar.co.nz/wi-fi-bridge-fo...s/p/YN8361
I just want to connect an ethernet security camera to wifi.
Is much cheaper option than a dedicated unifi wireless bridge setup, but i question how good its range is outside the house.

  Kingitanga hui
Posted by: Lilith7 - 21-01-2024, 10:47 AM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (33)

I suspect that this govt wasn't expecting such a strong reaction so quickly. They don't seem to have understood that this is going to get a reaction from not only Maori, but also Pakeha who are concerned.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/35015291...g-bring-it

"An estimated 10,000 Māori and non-Māori from around Aotearoa descended onto Tūrungawaewae Marae in Ngāruawāia on Saturday, heeding the call for a nationwide hui, by the Māori King, Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII.
Iwi from across the motu answered Kiingi T┼½heitiaÔÇÖs royal decree, mobilising and arriving in force.
The morning, sweltering hot, muggy and cloudy, began with an almighty pōwhiri, as the guests began to enter the marae atea (courtyard), and fill the entire site, and then areas across the street, in the wharekai (dining room) and on the banks of the Waikato River.
Each iwi introduced themselves, cracking jokes and helping set the mood that the hui was welcome for all.

Attendance was made up of wh─ünau from different backgrounds and areas of the country, including a small number of gang members.
Attendee Eugene Ryder said it felt good to see iwi M─üori come together as one.
ÔÇ£It was obvious from the new government we were going to be challenged, and I guess this was a great first response to being challenged,ÔÇØ he said.

Ryder was passionate about the GovernmentÔÇÖs proposed gang law reform, which he says will predominantly target M─üori.
Attendee Te A┼ìrere Parore Southon said the atmosphere of the hui was ÔÇÿall arohaÔÇÖ.
ÔÇ£If we meet with aroha and move with aroha and flow with it, thereÔÇÖs no need for arguments or anything like that,ÔÇØ she said.

ÔÇ£ItÔÇÖs a big bring it on, if they do want to play in that field, but itÔÇÖs also a bring it on with aroha.ÔÇØ

Kara Puketapu-Dentice, CEO of Taranaki Wh─ünui, delivered a core message of the hui, that would be delivered to R─ütana commemorations and Waitangi: that the Treaty was not open to reinterpretation.
ÔÇ£He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti are full and complete documents that provide for a written constitution for this nation. They do not require interpretation or reinterpretation by use of principles,ÔÇØ he told the crowd of thousands.
ÔÇ£If the Government does not uphold Te Tiriti, Te Arawa asserted they will cede, and form its own political authority.ÔÇØ

Speaking to the hui, Kiingi Tūheitia said the messages sent today were heard all over the world.

"By turning up, we've sent a strong message,ÔÇ£ he said.
ÔÇ£This is just day one, our time is now, kotahitanga is the way. Those who want to divide us I say this, we're all elite M─üori.
"We are elite M─üori, elite because of our whakapapa and mana."
Kiingi Tūheitia said they were only interested in one version of the treaty, the te reo version, that was not open to reinterpretation."

  Solar farming
Posted by: harm_less - 21-01-2024, 09:20 AM - Forum: Environment - Replies (46)

An interesting discussion is taking place in South Taranaki regarding the development of utility scale solar generation facilities. Basing their arguments on the historical remuneration agreements for oil developments that were shortsighted and biased towards the fossil fuel companies seems to be an inappropriate model to base solar developments on.

I can sympathise with the claims that bushland and wetlands will be affected by these projects but the loss of dairying income has to be put alongside the potential income stream and downstream development opportunities that a significant electricity source presents.

A background factor that isn't mentioned in this report is that the relatively uniformity of topography of South Taranaki's volcanic ring plain lends itself well to development of such projects and whereas dairying capitalises on the fertility of the volcanic soils these projects do so with the benign topography, and without the often criticised environmental impacts of intensive dairy farming. Obviously the STDC members will have strong connections within the dairy industry so this will influence their opinions on any competing activities on their patch.

Which means that 11 thousand people will be without a supermarket. This smacks of 'we can't make enough money here,so we're leaving & to hell with these people, they're too poor'

Govt leak confirmed, proposed treaty principles
Posted by: Lilith7 - 19-01-2024, 02:38 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

They seem to be trying to back away from it to some extent in only supporting it to the first reading.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/507...-bill-memo

"The government has confirmed a document about the government's proposed Treaty Principles bill is a leaked draft memo from the Ministry of Justice.

Te P─üti M─üori's co-leader Rawiri Waititi posted a screenshot of the leaked document on social media on Friday, saying it showed the government's "intentions to erase Te Tiriti o Waitangi".

The screenshot showed commentary from the report's author saying they expected the Bill would be "highly contentious".
