Anyone else having trouble?
I've had 3 people call today with the ssme issue. Seems to be an authentication issue with email clients such as outlook or Thunderbird.
Says the password is wrong, and is kicking people out. Can log in through Gmail.com ok.

The workaround I found was to create an application specific password and it works.

  Uvalde shooting & Matthew McConaughey
Posted by: Lilith7 - 08-06-2022, 07:18 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (12)

Its always a pleasant surprise to see someone in the public eye trying to do some good; in this instance change the dire gun laws in America. It must have taken some courage to voice his views there & I hope his career doesn't suffer because of it.

And by the way - he writes a damned good book too. Green Lights is excellent.

Clapping

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022...hite-house

Matthew McConaughey made an emotional plea for US lawmakers to pass gun control legislation during an appearance at the White House on Tuesday, where he urged Congress to ÔÇ£reach a higher groundÔÇØ.

The Academy AwardÔÇôwinning actor called for bolstering background checks for gun purchases and raising the minimum age to purchase an AR-15-style rifle from 18 to 21.

ÔÇ£We want secure and safe schools and we want gun laws that wonÔÇÖt make it so easy for the bad guys to get the damn guns,ÔÇØ McConaughey said.

McConaughey, who declined to take questions, spoke of his own connections to the town. He said his mother had taught kindergarten less than a mile from UvaldeÔÇÖs Robb elementary school, the site of the 24 May shooting. He also noted that Uvalde was the place where he was taught about responsibilities that come with gun ownership.

ÔÇ£Uvalde is where I was taught to revere the power and the capability of the tool that we call a gun,ÔÇØ he said.

He related the personal stories of a number of the victims.
He told the story of Maite Rodriguez, an aspiring marine biologist. McConaugheyÔÇÖs wife, Camila, sitting nearby, held MaiteÔÇÖs green Converse sneakers, which had a red heart on the right toe to represent her love of nature.
ÔÇ£These are the same green Converse, on her feet, that turned out to be the only clear evidence that could identify her after the shooting,ÔÇØ McConaughey said.

McConaughey acknowledged that gun legislation would not end mass shootings but suggested that more steps can be taken to avert such tragedies.
ÔÇ£We need to invest in mental healthcare. We need safer schools. We need to restrain sensationalized media coverage. We need to restore our family values. We need to restore our American values and we need responsible gun ownership,ÔÇØ McConaughey said.
ÔÇ£Is this a cure-all? Hell no, but people are hurting.ÔÇØ

19 years - man wrongly convicted.
Posted by: Lilith7 - 07-06-2022, 07:23 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (7)

Deliberately. By police who suppressed & altered evidence. Absolutely appalling that this was firstly, able to happen & secondly remain in place for so very long; the man's mother sold the family home to try to finance their legal costs.

I hope this poor man is given massive compensation, & those police responsible will pay the penalty for their crime if they're still alive. Angry Dodgy

"On Wednesday, Hall, now 60, his family, and supporters, including investigators Tim McKinnel and Katya Paquin, will be at the Supreme Court, hoping to hear that his conviction has finally been quashed, after numerous previous appeals and 35 years trying to prove his innocence.

In a remarkable sign that it now accepts Hall didnÔÇÖt commit the murder, Crown Law has admitted HallÔÇÖs claim that his case was a trial gone wrong, ÔÇ£is lamentably correctÔÇØ.

ÔÇ£Succinctly put, the Crown accepts that justice substantially miscarried in Mr HallÔÇÖs case ... the Crown acknowledges the unacceptable truth that an unanswerable cause of miscarriage here, and of unfair trial, was deliberate failure by those responsible for the prosecution to disclose material that would have plainly been important in Mr HallÔÇÖs defence,ÔÇØ Crown Law stated in its submissions to the Supreme Court, filed last week.

The most blatant example of this was the intentional alteration of a key witnessÔÇÖs statement.
Ronald Turner saw a man running from the direction of the crime scene just after Arthur Easton was stabbed, and in several statements was adamant the man was M─üori.
However, these statements were never handed over to HallÔÇÖs lawyers. And by the time TurnerÔÇÖs evidence was read to the jury at HallÔÇÖs trial, the prosecution had removed any reference to the person being M─üori, without telling Turner it had doctored his statements.

Hall, who has an intellectual disability and has recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, was interrogated by police for eight hours on one occasion, and 15 hours on another.

He didnÔÇÖt have a lawyer present during these interviews, despite several times asking for one."

The wealthy trying to avoid new tax
Posted by: Lilith7 - 05-06-2022, 03:17 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (24)

Surprising - no,  not even slightly.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/1288147...e-about-it

"Since the introduction of a new top personal tax rate, Inland Revenue has recorded a boom in the number of lower-tax entities created by high earners, which could be used to reduce tax bills.

The department (IR) warns efforts to dodge the new 39% tax by diverting income through companies (where they can be taxed at a maximum of 28%) and trusts (which can be taxed at a maximum of 33%) is likely to contribute to a $2.89 billion fall in revenues from high earners in the 2022 tax year.

The department is likely to re-open consultation on law changes to cut off methods of using companies to dodge tax later this year, after submissions raised issues during an initial consultation that closed in late-April, and moves are intended to be taken to crack down on trusts next year.

IR spokesperson Tony Morris says staff are not waiting on these changes, and if behaviour indicates someone has tried to avoid the top personal tax rate by diverting income to lower-tax entities they would be contacted and face substantial financial penalties."

"Arise" pastors resign, with over $6m of real estate
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-06-2022, 03:16 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (21)

If this isn't a blatant case of greed, masquerading as Christianity, then it's an excellent imitation. I think the time has come to de register 'religions' like this which are really a business in all but name.
I wonder if this is making the McBishop nervous.... Rolleyes

  • "Megachurch Arise has been accused of abuse and harassment within the organisation.

  • Leaders Brent, John and Gillian Cameron resigned last Friday, apologising ÔÇ£to all those who have been hurtÔÇØ.

  • Two reviews have been launched into allegations interns were ÔÇ£overworked, overwhelmed, and taken advantage ofÔÇØ.
A closer walk with God has also meant a hike up the property ladder for two pastors of the controversial Arise Church.
Brothers John and Brent Cameron┬ástepped down from their positions┬áin the church on May 27 over┬áallegations of abuse and harassment in the organisation. The church, which has 12 branches around New Zealand, has┬álaunched two reviews┬áÔÇô one into allegations interns at the Arise Church Ministry School were overworked and exploited."

  Indian woman to marry herself
Posted by: Lilith7 - 03-06-2022, 03:02 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (9)

I do have to wonder though - what if she meets someone else she wants to marry? Will she have to divorce herself first....? Rolleyes Big Grin

Apparently so - it has happened!

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-61671032

The idea of "marrying" oneself first made news nearly 20 years ago when Carrie Bradshaw, a character in the hugely popular American series Sex and the City, raised it. But the show was a comedy drama.

And in one highly unusual case, a 33-year-old Brazilian model "divorced" herself three months after her "wedding".
But since such stories are as yet unheard of in India, news of Ms Bindu's impending nuptials have become a talking point."

I have been receiving advertising emails from this company and unsubscribed at least twice now, but they keep coming. It appears I have a profile with their company. I have no idea how that would have happened as I would not have done that and I am quite upset about it. I cannot find any way to contact them. Maybe I will have to click on 'forgotten password', go into my profile and delete it that way, but I would also like to know who or how it was set up in the first place.  Has anyone else experienced this.
