The cat jumped on my laptop keyboard (Windows 10) and now all but about 5 icons have disappeared from my
desktop.  'show desktop icons' is ticked, it is not in 'tablet mode' - I cannot get the lost ones back - does anyone
have any ideas please?

Death threats, violence at Christian school. |

We're really just not a very nice species sometimes. More & more, I think it might not be  such a bad idea to require all religions to go through their holy books & remove the passages inciting hatred, violence & inequality.
Most of them were written back in or close to, the first century & so contain a lot which isn't relevant in the 21st century & which is very out of step with our times.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/bay-of-plenty/30...ian-school
"Violence, death threats and verbal attacks targeted at a group of students who were showing support for the LGBTQIA+ community broke out at a Tauranga school on Friday.
A group of students at Bethlehem College, a state-integrated Christian school, were taking part in the international Day of Silence against bullying when they became the victims of death threats, name-calling, sexual comments and ÔÇÿmissilesÔÇÖ thrown from an opposing group including other students at the college.
The abuse included chants of ÔÇ£kill the gaysÔÇØ, and students attending the event said that their phones had been confiscated so that they could not record video footage.
A parent of a student at Bethlehem College said that those taking part in the protest had received verbal death threats, ÔÇ£obscene hecklingÔÇØ and ÔÇ£sexual shamingÔÇØ comments from other teenage students at the school.
ÔÇ£It is ironic that people protesting against bullying themselves become the victim of bullying,ÔÇØ said the parent.
The petition to the government quotes students sharing their stories. One former student said she was told that girls are ÔÇ£at faultÔÇØ if they get sexually abused.
ÔÇ£We got told in an assembly that boys ÔÇÿcanÔÇÖt control themselves,ÔÇÖ and that ÔÇÿtheir brains arenÔÇÖt fully developed until theyÔÇÖre 25 ÔǪ it is down to what you wearÔÇÖ,ÔÇØ she said.
Lal said they had heard numerous stories of conversion therapy at Bethlehem College.
A parent whose child attended the college and who spoke to┬áStuff┬áon the basis of anonymity said one student was told by a member of staff that they had ÔÇ£a demon inside that needed to be exorcisedÔÇØ.

Trade Discounts |

Waltzed into a local electrical supplier and asked about mains cable to run underground to new shed. 16mm is what I enquired about or something similar that I would run in conduit. Spoke to my Sparky neighbour about costs and was told ÔÇ£huge mark ups to non trade puntersÔÇØ. 16mm mains is between $16- $25 ┬ápm┬áÔÇ£trade priceÔÇØ. Young girl looks up on computer and tells me $223.97 pm. Asked what trade was but was told I need an account to find out. What really gets up my nose is the lack of acknowledgement towards the cash paying customers. I could get my Sparky family members to buy on account for me but I always like keeping ahead of my outgoings plus I ÔÇÿm of the opinion that cash in the coffers is far better than promissory notes or stock on the shelves. I was in business from 1974 till I quit many decades later. My best customers were the ÔÇ£pay up frontÔÇØ ones. This allowed me to pay my debtors and staff and buy new stock. A few worldwide financial crashes told me that the buggers who owed money on accounts and went under, got away with a lot of peopleÔÇÖs money. NZ is and has always been too┬áeasy to give others credit with the expectation of being paid on time,┬áand iÔÇÖm betting that many on here know the stress involved trying to squeeze blood from stones. Anyway IÔÇÖm miffed that businesses are so reticent to offer people who pay up front any discounts at all. After all surely my dosh┬á up front is more valuable than the 3month promise to pay. I have bought huge amount of stock,┬áI have built and renovated many places and repaired much in my time, meaning I have spent huge amounts and never had an account. I hate accounts because they always end in problems. Would you offer discounts for cash and if not why not? Thoughts?

After reading a couple of things online about grocery expenses, I decided to run a little exercise on mine. I added up what we spent over the last 93 days at supermarkets etc. It adds up to $32 a day for two of us - around $224 a week - and that includes wine.

National wants to 'get tough on crime.' Again. |

It seems that every time there's an election within cooee, National starts banging the worn old ' lock them up & throw away the key' drum in a blatant attempt to gain votes from voters who don't understand that it doesn't work.
This time they want to copy Australian 'anti consorting laws'. Which don't work all that well over there.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...-gang-plan
"He also said police should have the power to issue ÔÇ£consorting prohibitionÔÇØ orders, making it illegal for identified gang members with a criminal record from meeting or communicating with each other. These consorting prohibition orders could be issued to anyone with a category 3 or 4 criminal conviction ÔÇô this includes aggravated assault or a third drink-driving conviction, up to murder."
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-17/a...a/10908048
A former bikie, who was one of the first to be charged under NSW's anti-consorting laws, says they stop bikies from hanging out in public but do nothing to stop the secret planning of crime.
Experts have backed a retired bikie's view that anti-consorting laws in the ACT would not stop gang violence, saying they had not worked elsewhere in Australia.
He said criminals had instead gone "underground" and, as a result, the authorities were "less knowledgeable about who's who and who's not".
"It's made the dumb c**** become smart. It's led to a reduction of weak people joining [the gangs], not hard criminals," he said.
"They're the people you don't want anyway, they're the ones the police want to infiltrate gangs because when they get done, they roll, so if anything, the police just upper-cutted themselves."
https://rlc.org.au/article/consorting-la...ble-people
"In spite of the majority of submissions received recommending that consorting be repealed, the Ombudsman has recommended to Government that consorting laws remain but that the laws should not apply to children under 17, and that changes be made to police policy. These recommendations do not go far enough in protecting the community from these broad and undemocratic laws.
Consorting makes it a criminal offence to continue to associate or communicate with people who have previously been convicted of an indictable offence, after having received an official warning from police.  An indictable offence is any offence punishable by two years imprisonment, and includes shoplifting, robbery, assault and damaging property.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, young people, and those experiencing homelessness were found by the Ombudsman to be disproportionately targeted by police, despite any evidence of engaging in serious or organised crime.
The disproportionate impact on vulnerable people identified by the review aligns with the experience of clients at Redfern Legal Centre. We have found that warnings, or the threat of a warning, are frequently issued to young people (many of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander) simply for being in a public space.
The OmbudsmanÔÇÖs recommendations do not however go far enough and do not address the fundamental problems with the law. Consorting will continue to criminalise otherwise lawful behaviour, because there is no requirement that the consorting be done for a criminal purpose. People will continue to be punished just for associating with anyone who is a convicted offender."

Im not really up with politics and I will be the first to admit it because it has never interested me but with Australia deporting these people that have been there since they were perhaps 3 or 4 years old why cant we just turn round and just say NO! Yes I understand that they are New Zealand citizens by birth but that is about it as they have no attachment to this country what so ever. Why wont we send Aussie criminals back there as in tit for tat and why wont we send criminals born in the Islands back home? There must be a reason for it so can someone please enlighten me.
