Not a typo.

There's a report on the BBC that the software is being used in the Ukraine conflict to identify Russian soldiers, by linking them to their online lives and from there to their friends and families.

My reaction was that this was multiplying the horror of war, but maybe there are other responses?

in the usa during vietnam conflict they stopped naming the dead because of the effect it had on the populace.
town newspapers would give the fallen obits etc.
they quashed it.
So if you disappear out of view You know I will never say goodbye

I can see that it has its uses, in identifying a dead person with no ID, but as with everything this is a double edged sword. It could surely be misused, & I came across a short piece about that.
There's no fathoming people who would do this.
