The "yes hair theorem" claims to resolve the paradox by bridging the gap between general relativity and quantum mechanics. The notion of quantum hair allows information about what goes into a black hole to come out again without violating any of the important principles of either theory. It is a simple and elegant solution.

One of the problems I have always had with black holes is the idea that energy is never lost, merely transformed. Matter is one of those transformational states. So, if matter is absorbed by a black hole and in the process converted to energy which is subsequently released in particle form then if matter/energy stops entering, eventually the black hole would simply fade away...

Which might explain why there are fewer of them than the number of stars might suggest there should be. Black holes being stars that have collapsed. Maybe they do starve to death...
