Doing something because everyone else is doing it is a very bad idea.

Not necessarily at all.
Perhaps 'everyone else' have some sense and doing that they do might be a very good idea indeed.  Doesn't it occur to you that a majority is quite often a sign of RIGHT rather than wrong ?

Sometimes, but not always. Easy enough to find examples from history when the majority was wrong.
