I think the ideal situation for America is that the war continues, the final winner only matters in a global picture and how much NATO can influence Trump, but the guiding hand is the Military-industrial complex of America as it has always been all over the world and the profits thereby, weakening Putin in the process but not creating a power vacuum if he is defeated.
Trump will be wheeling and dealing in the midst of all this and the fate of Ukraine won't matter much to him just how to extract maximum money for his interests out of the situation. Trump doesn't seem to have in depth knowledge of world affairs over the past and is strangely lacking in different area of knowledge which he should be in full understanding of but he has other priorities as we have learnt.
Russia's nuclear capabilities make it almost certain that Russia will not be defeated under any circumstances, who wants all those weapons in the hands of terrorists and unknown political entities if Putin goes down. At least he is fairly predictable as it is now.
We are talking about a big chess game with no winners or losers only money changing hands. Good and evil got nothing to do with it, America is just as much of a bad guy as Russia.

It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche
