"9. Cats have 9 lives, Daddy" stated Evie. Evie was a blue-eyed 7-year-old, going on eight as she'd be quick to point out. Daddy was a grey-eyed 45-year-old with a troublesome knee. He often wondered why he'd been christened Daddy but his parents were no longer around to ask. They were in Oamaru.
Daddy was under the impression that he was Evie's father. She'd shown up one day and said as much, so he'd just gone with it. He appreciated the company. Loneliness had followed him around since a young age, but now Loneliness was old and preferred staying at home.
"Daddy, this story is going nowhere, and we haven't got up to the cool bit about how we're confidence tricksters and we're going to get all that money off that old lady with the jokey name." Evie pulled at a pigtail.
"Some other time Evie, some other time. And leave my pigtails alone."
