Fantastic - now, even more people will become hardened criminals, bitter, twisted & keen to give a massive special salute to society..
WHY? Why the devil do right wing politicians appear unable to see past the bash bash short term 'solution' fgs?
Mark Mitchell seems unable to comprehend that other ways can & do, get far better long term results. He gives the impression of being a mercikess bully.
Or is it that they DO for reasons unknown actually want a large group of people constantly committing crimes, returning to prison again & again...?! How the devil can they be so very stupid.

They're very keen to lock people up, not so keen on having to deal with the consequences of that...

in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)

Did you read the bit about people with longer sentences having more access to rehabilitation and having more successful re-entry into society?
The data shows that people who serve longer sentences are less likely to re-offend, so your insinuation that longer sentences turn people into hardened criminals that are more likely to re-offend isn't actually supported by the facts.

heisenburg is definitely not a fan of long sentences. Usually seems to have trouble stringing more than half a dozen words together and punctuation is totally off the menu.

They could do worse than to look at what other countries are doing. While no system is perfect, some countries are managing to do better than others.

Norway has one of the world's lowest recidivism rates, only 20% of formerly incarcerated committ another crime within two years of release. And there are fewer people going to prison.
Prior to the reforms in the 19190's their recidivist rate was  in the 60% to 70%, they're clearly doing somthing right...

Wouldn't work here - it requires intelligence on the part of policymakers and the spending of money - and what would lazy politicians do if they couldn't whip up unease and hate in the unthinking fools who support them?

Well - yes, they are talented at doing exactly that!
It seems that often the one thing all our politicians have in common is a reluctance - or perhaps an inability, to take a long term view.

Norway have the Sami?

from google
Quote:Culture:The Sami have a distinct culture, including traditional practices like reindeer herding, music (including "yoik"), and arts.

 Rights:
The Sami have legal rights as indigenous people in Norway, including the right to protect and develop their language, culture, and community life.

 Historical context:
The Sami have a long history in the region, facing persecution in the past as Scandinavian nation-states expanded and took charge of traditional Sami territories.

 Contemporary status:
The Sami are experiencing a renaissance of their culture and are making strides in reclaiming their identity.

you don't feel like we as a society should bare any responsibility for that?

Colonialism explains it in a crude way, but it was the actions of successive governments between then and now that has shaped society over the last couple of centuries... and we still seem to be  perpetuating the same behaviours that caused this problem we have in the first place...

It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche
