yes it is the 1882 exhibition medal in silver. I did recognise it, but they usually don't sell for anywhere near that (you can usually divide Tony's prices by 2 to get market value!). Also a couple of nice Milner Thompson tokens, the second one not so common. I just thought I might get a bargain, it being an auction and that the only NZ lot that I noticed. But obviously there were at least 2 wealthy morons who also noticed it (yes I think I might be a bit bitter!). I'll probably get outbid on the Una too!

it does look quite nice so could be a proof. Although the sellers other coins look a bit dodgy (think there might be some artificial toning going on!). Bargain price if it is a proof (maybe worth the risk?). But then maybe too good to be true?

I knew a collector in the US who reckoned he had the chemical mixtures to generate any kind of toning you'd like.  Probably long gone now, and I never thought at the time to ask him for the recipes :-)

It's got that matte look to it, though I don't like what looks like a bag mark behind the king's eye, and some weakness/wear to the rim+rim beads just in front of the king's robe and at round 6:00 on the ref.
