Came across this earlier; when there was a lot of interest in a rental property, the landlord promptly added another $50 pw to the rent, making a total of $900pw. Its extremely unlikely that, if a prospective tenant says they'll pay the $900 the landlord would then take a tenant who's able to pay only the quoted rent of $850. it was advertised on TM.
If that isn't blatant greed, then its an excellent imitation. https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/homed...g-response
"A hopeful Auckland renter has been left fuming after the owner of a Silverdale property bumped the rent up $50 to $900 per week after their online listing received an ÔÇ£overwhelming responseÔÇØ.
Millwater resident Julie Gielen said the rent hike strikes her as an investor exploiting a housing crisis, and has lodged a complaint with Tenancy Services, saying it breaches a law that prohibits rental bidding."

Yep, this is blatant greed, and taking advantage of people, in a most vile kind of way.
It will be interesting to see what the outcome of her complaint is, though I wonder is TS can do anything.

Sadly, the bad guys spoil it for the good ones, who are just wanting a fair rent, without the greed attached.

Perhaps there's room for a law to ban the practice of increasing the rent like this if there's more interest than expected in a property, & stipulate that the rent stated must remain. And a suitable penalty for those breaking it, in the form of a hefty fine since these landlords apparently only understand money.

Who even can earn that much money to pay rent? Thats more than a weeks wages for many people. A mortgage would be cheaper, but sadly not many can even save enough for a deposit because prices increase so much.the goal post keeps moving.

The whole housing issue needs sorting out I think, to make it fairer for everyone. Its much the same in most other western countries which also embraced neo liberalism; young people especially are effectively shut out of the housing market & have no other option but to pay sometimes very high rent. Here in NZ it was once possible for virtually everyone to eventually own a home, but that's no longer possible.

Wake up people! There is greed happening everywhere especially in the supermarkets. I was buying a certain brand toilet paper for $10.80 and witnessed the price jump to $13.80, a $3 hike. Almost 33% increase. Then I started noticing a lot of other thing have jumped in price, not just a small increase. Supermarkets should be ashamed of their blatant greed.

Is it greed or is it costing more to put on the shelves? Everything in the supply chains is costing more at the moment so it's hard to put a finger on where the increase is coming from. Also, instead of making specials to encourage people to buy heaps, supermarkets can be forgiven for charging standard prices to manage people panic-buying.

"Proven law of economics" it may be - its also sheer unbridled greed, taking advantage of shortages to hike prices in order to make a fatter profit. A good strong dash of fairness wouldn't come amiss.
And no govt AFAIK, has ever yet done every last thing they claimed to be going to do prior to being voted into govt.

anything theyve achieved will do. housing? child poverty? slow down immigration? anything?
roading? infrastructure? they have cancelled more projects than theyve started.
i see the balanced view, non partisan, apolitical. i can give credit where is due,
theyve done an excellent job with covid.
i can give a brickbat too.
theyve done fuck all else.

I think its obvious this govt hasn't managed to do all that they were going to; housing in particular is far worse now than it should be by this stage. And a big part of the problems this govt is facing are the result of 3 decades of greed-based Neo Liberalism, which meant that some things were allowed to worsen in the name of profit.
Both National & Labour are responsible, but expecting the mess 30 odd years in the making to be magically fixed so quickly is on a par with hunting unicorns.

Yes, and especially after two years of a global pandemic which obviously had to be made top priority and which shows no signs of abating.

Exactly - & with not as much as a hint of their intentions prior to the election. Bloody Roger Bloody Douglas & co blithely bulldozed everything through, throwing both consultation & caution to the winds they imposed neo Liberal policies on this country, similar to what happened in other western countries.

And when people had had enough & voted the mongrels out, &  National govt took office, they merrily continued down the same road having also not as much as breathed one word of their intentions.

Bastards, the lot of them. But I vote & I will always vote, because our foremothers went through hell, fire & water so that we could.

I have voted for Labour the whole of my voting life. So I was an enabler of the Douglas neoliberalism, but I am also an enabler of the present Government's excellent work in keeping most of the citizens of Aotearoa safe from the virus that has killed millions around the world.
