Meanwhile India with a similar population to china is getting hundreds of thousands of cases daily.
I find it hard to believe China could have gotten it under control so easily.

I've got a friend who lives in China who said cases were tracked by apartment building. If a positive case was found, the entire building was locked down, and penalties for breaches were harsh.
So on one hand I can believe that given how heavy handed the Chinese govt can be, they may have gotten it under control.
On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if they were massively under reporting the numbers.

Yes it wouldn't be at all surprising if their numbers are inaccurate. But as you say they're inclined to clamp down very hard too, so who knows.

So it is possible that they got it under control due to their brutal lockdown measures and penalties that encourage neighbors to do in anyone showing symptoms to the authorities where they were being rounded up and taken to quarantine centers.

Foreigner made a video while walking around in April 2021. People going about daily life, businesses open. It's not possible to have rampant infections and hospitals full without the public noticing and panicking.
