Changes to RUC collection coming - harm_less - 06-08-2025 Not before time but hopefully the changes are well thought through and mindful of their effects on emissions. https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360782053/petrol-tax-getting-scrapped-road-user-charges-expand-all-vehicles-2027 RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - king1 - 06-08-2025 (06-08-2025, 11:58 AM)harm_less Wrote: Not before time but hopefully the changes are well thought through and mindful of their effects on emissions. pretty sure revenue gathering will be at the forefront of this government's mind... Modern vehicles' increasing fuel efficiency has resulted in the RUC as part of petrol price now not being sufficient to fund road maintenance so like most Western countries our government is planning to change this taxation model for one that works. Essentially the RUC system is no longer fit for purpose so a ground-up rebuild is inevitable. RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - Zurdo - 06-08-2025 By mileage...or kilometerage - but the odo on my motorcycle has stopped working, which is not a problem at the moment. Maybe I'll just make up numbers...keep a record so I don't go backwards. RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - heisenberg - 07-08-2025 one things fer sher IF they drop the 70c tax on a ltr of fuel it wont take long for some government to add it again RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - harm_less - 07-08-2025 (07-08-2025, 10:22 AM)heisenberg Wrote: one things fer sher IF they drop the 70c tax on a ltr of fuel it wont take long for some government┬á to add it againYou really need to up your research Heinie. FET National Land Transport Fund component is 70.02c/L + GST so 80.5c/L to most folks. That said I would be both surprised and disappointed if the petrol pump price dropped by that much. It would reduce the disincentive of running a high consumption vehicle so a windfall for V8s, DCUs, etc so an increase in carbon/ETS taxation needs to be part of this RUC system change to correct the balance in terms of emissions reduction. RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - Zurdo - 07-08-2025 I'll be getting 20 litres of petrol a week for the lawnmower. RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - heisenberg - 08-08-2025 YouÔÇÖre going to be paying by weight so a motorcycle weighs sweet fa so theoretically does no damage to the road so shouldnÔÇÖt be paying much, EVs weigh significantly more than a similar size petrol vehicle so should pay more diesels shouldnÔÇÖt change but probably will RE: Changes to RUC collection coming - harm_less - 08-08-2025 (08-08-2025, 06:03 AM)heisenberg Wrote: YouÔÇÖre going to be paying by weight so a motorcycle weighs┬á sweet fa so theoretically does no damage to the road so shouldnÔÇÖt be paying much, EVs weigh significantly more than a similar size petrol vehicle so should pay more diesels shouldnÔÇÖt change but probably willMost EVs weigh less than a double cab ute but as it is unlikely that the existing <3.5T lowest weight band will change that's pretty much an irrelevant point. It will be interesting to see how they treat motorcycles in terms of RUC though as that tax is as much to do with their required footprint in traffic as their effects on roading surfaces. |
