Interested in the end of civilisation - Praktica - 27-06-2025 and how it might happen? This Guardian article looks at a subreddit which discusses just that... https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/26/rcollapse-reddit-apocalypse-news RE: Interested in the end of civilisation - Oh_hunnihunni - 27-06-2025 I think it has already happened. RE: Interested in the end of civilisation - Lilith7 - 27-06-2025 I tend to agree that its likely to be slowish due to pollution rather than sudden, although that always remains a possibility. I remember the old Brit series, The Survivors from I think, the 70s. We really are among the stupidest of species. And the cleverest. RE: Interested in the end of civilisation - Oh_hunnihunni - 27-06-2025 That series has travelled quite well. I revisited it a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed it. At the time it was first shown a friend & I had a tradition - Wednesday night, chocolate cake & The survivors...I must remind her of that, bet she's not thought of it for years. Unless we make some changes, I suspect our descendants will have to live with a very changed planet & their lives may be far harder than ours have been. RE: Interested in the end of civilisation - heisenberg - 29-06-2025 the sky's falling best put taxes up ThatÔÇÖll solve it RE: Interested in the end of civilisation - Oh_hunnihunni - 29-06-2025 Well, if you can think of real solutions that do not involve spending vast amounts of our money, then speak up! I can't... And the really rich would hardly notice it. The tax increase that is. If they actually managed not to evade it. All income over $100k taxed at 60%, eh? 2% tax per year on wealth over $2M, as well. And then there's the IRD's idea, raising gst to 18% while putting a code on the payment cards of low income people that discounts the tax take of each purchase they make. Apparently that software is already in play in some Euro countries, so easy to implement and requires minimal bureaucratic involvement. There are better ways than the system we have. We just need the political will to put one or other - or a combo, into action. And that super we get? Means test it. It is a benefit, just like all the others that are means tested. My affordable rental is means tested, I see no issue with putting the help where it is genuinely needed.
