They've been feeling like this for years in Venice, my parents went there in the late 60's and tourists were already unpopular, not enough toilets for instance, as basic as that. They want some but not too many. Remember in Covid days when tourism almost stopped and the canals became clear water again, one could see fish.

i did a river tour in Shanghai the guide on the boat was telling us all the pollution is because of the tourists
as we go past the back of a restaurant and one of the lackeys is tipping buckets of slop into the river
they say Shanghai is the Venice of Asia

When I came here in 1972 the crew of the ship we came over on threw all of their rubbish over the back of the ship into the wash by the stern. Cartons and cartons of it.

seems to be a bit of revolt against mass tourism everywhere of late. Authorities have milked mass tourism for all it's worth but I suspect the costs to society are starting to outweigh the benefits - I hope the politicians everywhere are listening...

I don't see why you're so sure, it was definitely frowned on then, ie illegal dumping of rubbish, fly tipping, but I saw sailors/kitchen staff throwing open cartons full of trash and kitchen rubbish over the back rail of the ship into the wash of the propellers, I'm guessing to avoid paying dumping fees to the port area dump for such rubbish.
That situation would still be exactly the same, no observers = no crime but no fees to pay.
