  Solution to the flooding problem
Posted by: TygerTung - 17-11-2021, 06:51 AM - Forum: Environment - Replies (12)

What would be a good solution would be to build rectangular or square houses and build them on floats.

They could be sitting on a gravel bed, be on floats and have mooring posts which the houses could be attached to. They would need to have flexible pipes for the services, but that could easily be allowed for.

That way if there is flooding, the house just floats up a bit. Could have a dinghy as well to get around if the water is too deep.

Do you 'save things for best'?
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 16-11-2021, 07:55 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (19)

The best china, the best linen, the best silver - it used to be a 'thing' that the lovely stuff, the quality goods were 'saved for best' and the lesser grade used every day. So, when clearing an estate it was quite common to find items still in their wrapping, or carefully stored, pristine and untouched, in chests and cupboards. Then they show up on TradeMe these days, auction houses in the past, clearance sales and the like.

So, do you use the good stuff? Or save it for 'best'?  Smile

There's an article on RNZ about retirement
Posted by: Praktica - 16-11-2021, 06:53 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

and how much a couple need for retirement, and how much they should be saving before retirement.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/4558...nes-stress

I'm amazed at the level of savings they say couples should be aiming for weekly. I've had some reasonably well paid jobs, but I would never have been able to save at the level required.

We live on NZ super, and we are able to save on that payment - helped by the fact we own our home outright, and have no debts.

Anyone know if Piquant has found her way here? Such a knowledgeable  gardener. Always good for the right advice.

Question Can I exclude/block/ignore certain users
Posted by: king1 - 16-11-2021, 11:14 AM - Forum: Tips & Tricks - No Replies

We know that sometimes, some users get overzealous, and we do have a team of moderators that are able to monitor and if necessary moderate posts by users.

If there is a particular user that you wish would just go away, there are two things you can do.

  1. Use the 'Report' button on the toolbar of the relevant post, this alerts Moderators.  Only do this if you feel the post breaches our rules - found here.
  2. For the worst offenders you can add the username to your personal 'Ignore' list - found here.

Question Can I exclude/block/ignore certain forums
Posted by: king1 - 16-11-2021, 11:01 AM - Forum: Tips & Tricks - No Replies

We don't presently have a user controlled method for limiting what forums you see or have access to in the main message board view.

What we do have is a behind the scenes method to exclude access to the Opinion and Politics, and the Covid 19 boards.

These two are usually the forums that garner the most 'robust' debates, and we know that some folks have little desire to participate in these debates, so the option is available.

Please let one of the mods or admin know - you can use the private message function for this, or reply to this post...

  The perils of compost
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 16-11-2021, 10:32 AM - Forum: Gardening & DIY - Replies (13)

I am almost at the bottom of last year's matured bin now, and have disturbed an ant nest. So there's me, leaning over the top edge fishing out nice fat spadefuls of the luscious stuff while the beasts run frantically over my hands and arms and under the tee shirt and into places that are very ticklish.

Thank goodness I am near the bottom. Of the compost... Confused
