Yellowknife, in Canada's northwest has seen people flee hundreds of kilometres to safety. That must be so scary, poor people.
https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/08/19/city-...dfire/#_=_
anada showed no signs of easing.
"Airtankers flew missions overnight to keep the only route out of Yellowknife open. Meanwhile, a network of fire guards, sprinklers and water cannons was being established to try to protect the city from the fire, which had moved to within 15 kilometres.
"We've still got some really difficult days ahead. There's no denying that," said fire information officer Mike Westwick. He said winds from the north and northwest predicted for the weekend could "push the fires in directions we don't want them to go".
Hundreds of kilometres south of Yellowknife, homes were burning in West Kelowna, British Columbia, a city of about 38,000, after a wildfire grew "exponentially worse" than expected overnight, the fire chief said.
Residents had already been ordered to evacuate 2400 properties, while another 4800 properties were on evacuation alert. The BC Wildfire Service said the fire grew six times larger overnight and it stretches over 68 square kilometres."

Unbelievable -  the nonsense these misogynists can get themselves to believe speaks volumes about both their education & their intelligence - or lack thereof. If it wasn't so awful, their ignorance would be hilarious.
And I don't think they're going to let the fact that they won't find anything within Islam to support their disgraceful ideas stop them from continuing to repress & control women as much as they possibly can.
Women 'lose value'  if their faces are visible to men.
https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/08/19/women...-says/#_=_
her face covered when outside the home.
"The Taliban, who took over the country in August 2021, have cited the failure of women to observe the proper way to wear the hijab, or Islamic headscarf, as a reason for barring them from most public spaces, including parks, jobs and university.
Molvi Mohammad Sadiq Akif, the spokesman for the Taliban's Ministry of Vice and Virtue, said in an interview with The Associated Press that if women's faces are visible in public there is a possibility of fitna, or falling into sin.
"It is very bad to see women (without the hijab) in some areas (big cities), and our scholars also agree that women's faces should be hidden," Akif said. "It's not that her face will be harmed or damaged.
"A woman has her own value and that value decreases by men looking at her.
Tim Winter, who is the Shaykh Zayed Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University, said there was no scriptural mandate in Islam for face coverings and the Taliban would struggle to find anything in Islamic scripture that backed their interpretation of hijab rules."

(For what it's worth, many of these ideas have been floated to varying degrees from ACT, NZF and National)
I would:
*remove charity status from all cults and that religion alone is not enough reason for charity status, I.e they have to demonstrate they are giving back to the community in some shape or form and not only looking after their own members, most churches/faiths with the exception of a few fundamental denominations already qualify, so no real issue here. If any of their beliefs and practices shun members for leaving or "breaking" their rules then they are automatically disqualified no matter what.
*initiate a referendum (maori only) to review if the maori seats are relevant today in govt, they have largely served their purpose and only a fraction of maori are on the maori roll and many maori are elected on the general roll anyway.
*End co governance
*Shut down the ETS
*Remove all carbon tax
*greatly reduce immigration and only allow critical skilled workers that we are desperate for such as health.
*Ensure the education system is politically neutral
*reopen our mothballed coal mines and begin exports
*open up more mines such as gold, but make them state owned so that more profits stay in NZ
*restart oil exploration and invest into a new smaller refinery in the Taranaki region
*Initiate a referendum on making NZ a republic as declared in the original declaration of independence that NZ had (he whakaputanga)
*initiate a referendum on whether our nuclear free policy is still relevant, I.e would we ban nuclear ships/subs from entering our waters if we need assistance allied countries to defend us in a potential conflict/war? (Aussie is getting nuclear subs that we might need for example)
*build solar farms and make solar on all new home builds mandatory, and introduce legislation that ensures owners get fair unit rates from the power they sell back.
*explore options for a small nuclear modular reactor to be built.
*Diversify our primary sector exports ASAP, we are far too reliant on China.

| Increase in fuel tax proposal |

The glaring omission in regard to the government's latest strategy in raising FET to fund roading is the lack of any mention of RUCs.
This interview on Radio NZ https://www.rnz.co.nz/audio/player?audio_id=2018903010 mentions the apparent work currently under way at government level of a rehash of the RUC system in readiness for next April's inclusion of EVs into that tax net. So, with a hopefully fully functional RUC system just over the horizon what is the government up to rearranging details of taxation rates on fossil fuels when their unlying intent is to increase the proportion of EVs in our national fleet, thus effectively self-sabotaging this new tax increase?
Wouldn't it be more logical to tailor the new RUC system to capture sufficient funds to cope with the roading shopping list they have in front of them? A tax increase slapped into their electioneering campaign seems to not be a wise move. Is this actually a red herring which gives them an opportunity of withdrawing it as a 'tax cut' with the introduction of a fit for purpose RUC system, or is it the result of the left hand not understanding what the right is doing?
Fuel taxes are best suited to incentivise or disincentivise fossil fuel use whereas RUCs are literally meant to fund roading, or am I missing something here?

I went to order some pizzas the other day and all the common pizzas were listed in Maori with the English name in light grey and smaller text.
WTF? Do they actually want to sell pizzas or what? They are sure making it hard to place an order!
What would be better is to actually give you the option of your language when you log into the app.
And that way they can track how many people use the maori version.

Seems a bit strange to deny people the vote on the basis of age when at that age they are legally entitled to do all kinds of things, including get married, drive a car, consent or refuse medical treatment, have babies - or father them, change their name, leave home, leave school, get a firearms licence, be charged, represent their country overseas, and all sorts of other stuff...
But casting one vote among many? We can't let them do that? Can't grant them that privilege?
But, we allow so many incompetent adults to do it without issue. Bit precious of us 'grown ups' don't you think?

Anyone listen to newstalk ZB?
HDPA was on the air talking about this today, some last minute policy by labour to grab voters away from the greens.
She said it's predicted to cause 1 in every 5 farms to close down. Dairy farmers are forecast to loose $80K per year with current milk prices and they want to slap more regulations to force food prices up more and extra compliance costs.
The only way to reduce these BS emissions is to have less animals. Now they are talking about vaccines, drugs, genetic engineering and all sorts of shit to put into these animals to reduce emissions.
Perhaps the best thing is to see all our farms close and then wait for all the townies to winge when there is no milk or meat on the supermarket shelves.
Then they will only have insects to enjoy on the dinner table.
If farms fail to make profit,  then our economy is screwed and so is a great chunk of revenue for the govt too.
These guys running this sinking ship are a bunch of clowns.
