The (not so) Great Debate
Posted by: king1 - 14-09-2023, 08:51 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (7)

We'll that was underwhelming,

Grant Robertson: pretty much on the defensive the whole time
Nicola Willis: seemed like she was in a high school debating competition, name dropping more than a few times
David Seymour: comes across as if human and social costs don't even cross his mind as the dollar signs whizz by.
James Shaw: the only one that seemed to actually care about something other than the politics TBH...

just my two cents...

Not sure why National don't think it's important to explain the costing of the tax cuts, harms the credibility big time imo

anyone else inflict death upon 1000 brain cells by watching it?

  Anti-government advert on telly
Posted by: king1 - 14-09-2023, 06:47 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

anyone know who is doing that anti government attack advert on telly?  i'm seeing / hearing it in TV3, just on now during the news.   but there was no identifying "authorised by" info I could see, usually required for political parties... keep missing the beginning of it

Any clues?

The times they are a-changing, the last sentence of this article is a tad weird.
In my day we were not encouraged to fly into any terrain, no matter how well insured the aircraft might be.

Nicola Willis - happy to work with David Seymour
Posted by: Lilith7 - 14-09-2023, 12:14 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (5)

Oh joy, what little delights may be in store if that lot get a sniff of power! She always reminds me of Ruth Richardson which is rather unfortunate, in view of the nickname she had at the time, Ruthless.

"Under her plan, a National Government would have just six months to find $14.6 billion if it is to keep its promise of income tax cuts and boosted payments to families. But Willis is sure she can pull that off, telling┬áStuff┬áshe expects to have the majority of the public service ÔÇ£savingsÔÇØ needed to fund this plan done by Christmas.
Her commitment comes amid a polling backdrop that shows National and ACT in a strong position to form the next government. ACT leader David Seymour has been campaigning on a platform of cutting Government spending, saying National hasnÔÇÖt gone far enough.
In an extended interview on Tova,┬áthe new podcast hosted by┬áStuff┬áchief political correspondent Tova OÔÇÖBrien, Willis said she would be happy to work beside Seymour in a Treasurer-type role if she was the next minister of finance.
Those cost cuts across the public service would be done by Christmas, Willis told Stuff.
ÔÇ£I was fortunate to work for John Key when he first formed a Government in 2008. And I can tell you that in the first 100 days, a huge amount was done,ÔÇØ she said.
Willis refused to entertain the idea that those cuts might not have been found by July, or that the new taxes wouldnÔÇÖt be generating the revenue needed by her deadline.
Asked if she was willing to borrow money to fund NationalÔÇÖs tax relief, Willis replied: ÔÇ£We will be able to deliver it without borrowing... we are confident we can.ÔÇØ

Microsoft really making it difficult to switch default browser in win11
Posted by: nzoomed - 13-09-2023, 05:16 PM - Forum: Computing and Technology - Replies (8)

You used to be able to do it with just a single click to change your browser defaults.
But now you have to go through every jolly file type it seems in windows 11.
I'm sure earlier versions of 11 were not like this.
Probably means I need to rely on more third party tools and registry hacks, etc.

  Possible life on faraway planet
Posted by: Lilith7 - 13-09-2023, 03:42 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - No Replies

Or not. But perhaps possible - interesting anyway.

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-66786611

"Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope may have discovered tentative evidence of a sign of life on a faraway planet.
It may have detected a molecule called dimethyl sulphide (DMS). On Earth, at least, this is only produced by life.

The researchers stress that the detection on the planet 120 light years away is "not robust" and more data is needed to confirm its presence.
Researchers have also detected methane and CO2 in the planet's atmosphere.
Detection of these gases could mean the planet, named K2-18b, has a water ocean.
Prof Nikku Madhusudhan, of the University of Cambridge, who led the research, told BBC News that his entire team were ''shocked'' when they saw the results.

"On Earth, DMS is only produced by life. The bulk of it in Earth's atmosphere is emitted from phytoplankton in marine environments," he said.
The proportions of CO2 and methane are consistent with there being a water ocean underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere. Nasa's Hubble telescope had detected the presence of water vapour previously, which is why the planet, which has been named K2-18b, was one of the first to be investigated by the vastly more powerful JWST, but the possibility of an ocean is a big step forward."

Where to obtain a house floor plan
Posted by: Roscoe - 13-09-2023, 06:46 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

I am wanting to obtain the floor plan of two houses in Auckland for use in a court cass. I have  tried Auckland council with little success and I wondered if there was somewhere else that I could go to. What I am trying to ascertain is how many bedrooms there are in  both houses.

Thanks for your help

  Weirdness...
Posted by: Oh_hunnihunni - 12-09-2023, 04:29 PM - Forum: News and Current Affairs - Replies (8)

So there were two missed calls from a number I didn't recognise on my ph, and thinking it was maybe the hospital or dhb I rang back. It was answered by a woman with a heavy accent telling me she was the Electoral Commission and just needed some details that I hadn't filled out on my new enrolment form.

Ummm... new enrolment form? Nahhhhh. No change for the that ten years I told her, and if she had a new form it wasn't from me... Would I give my address and full name please? Nope to that too, seeing I couldn't confirm who she was...

How on earth did she get my number anyway, seeing I am very reluctant to give that to anyone, let alone the Electoral Commission. Why would they need it?

Weirdness indeed.

Or am I just too scam sensitive these days?

  Winston - "Ugly, wrong, desperate"
Posted by: Lilith7 - 12-09-2023, 04:10 PM - Forum: Opinion and Politics - Replies (33)

The reaction from other parties to Winston's comments  about Maori.

The pariah no one wants to work with - but may yet need to.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politic...ton-peters

"All the other party leaders said he was wrong, but NZ First leader Winston Peters isnÔÇÖt out in the cold quite yet.
After┬áhe told a public meeting in Nelson that he doesnÔÇÖt think M─üori are actually indigenous to Aotearoa New Zealand, Peters faced swift and often brutal rebukes from other political players.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins, who has already said heÔÇÖd rather lose his job than work with Peters, called PetersÔÇÖ comments ÔÇ£divisiveÔÇØ. He said it was proof Peters was ÔÇ£a force for chaosÔÇØ and couldnÔÇÖt be in government.
ACT leader David Seymour┬ácalled it ÔÇ£uglyÔÇØ politics.
"They're desperate. The truth is most polls still have them under 5%, his political career is over and he's got nothing to show for 45 years of this,ÔÇØ Seymour said.
And National leader Christopher Luxon said Peters was clearly ÔÇ£wrongÔÇØ, but he┬áonce again refused┬áto give an opinion on governing beside Peters.
Asked what line Peters would need to cross, before Luxon rules out working with him, the National leader refused to say."
